CHAPTER 1
{AT ELENA'S APARTMENT} “COME OUTSIDE,” Elena read the text message that was sent to her phone for the upteenth time, her heart dropping every single time she reads it. She had just finished taking her bath and was about to sleep when her phone buzzed on the table with a notification. She dragged her feet lazily to the table to check what the notification was about and she saw the text sent in capital letters from a private number. She stood beside the table with confusion written all over her face, and was trying to think about who might have sent the message. After what seemed like forever, she dropped her phone back on the table and went to her closet to pull out a heavy torchlight from there, then she went to the window and stood close to it, trying to shake off the uneasiness crawling up her spine. But then, a sound echoed outside her apartment door. Elena froze, her heart slowed, then sped up. “…Hello?” she called carefully, holding in her breath. Silence. Another sound followed. Slow heavy footsteps were approaching her door. Elena shifted back instantly, her breath catching. She wasn’t imagining it now. Someone is definitely there. At her door. Her fingers trembled as she reached for her phone, but before she could unlock it, a knock came on her door. “Who is it?” she asked, trying to sound firm. Silence. She breathed heavily, trying to calm her nerves. The doorknob turned roughly, like someone is trying so hard to open it, and in no time, they succeeded. Elena’s breath stopped. Slowly, the door opened. And everything in her world shifted. Three men in black stood tall in the doorway. Elena held her phone tight by her side, breathing heavily and calculating her next step. She grabbed a nearby chair in her room and smashed it into the window, sending glass shattering in every direction, then she dropped the chair roughly on the floor and jumped through the shattered window. Her phone fell in the process but she continued running without picking it up. She ran towards the gate, and realized she was trapped, there were five men coming towards her ready to take her down. When the first man charged forward, she dropped low, and used his speed to knock his leg out from under him. As he dropped to the ground, she hit his cheek hard with her fist, knocking out his two front teeth. The second man attacked wildly, but she blocked his punch, before grabbing his arm, and twisting it hard until his elbow broke. After that, she spun him and threw him into the third man’s way. The third man pulled out a combat knife, but she quickly moved closer to him and grabbed his wrist to stop him, before hitting the side of his head with her elbow twice. Her late father had spent years training her even when she was against it, claiming she needed it for self defense. She used to hate him for it though, but now she's so thankful. She took the knife from the third man and pointed it to the fourth man, but then, she found herself surrounded, she was trapped on all sides. The fifth man walked toward her, and punched her hard in the waist. It was so hard, and she couldn't breathe properly. Everything around her felt like it was spinning. She tried to regain her balance, and quickly threw a punch to him, but it barely touched him. He grabbed her roughly and pushed her against the wall making her weak, but she wasn't giving up. She hit her head forcefully into his nose, making it bleed and splashing blood on her shirt. But two more men grabbed her arms so she couldn't move. She kicked one of them and hit his leg, but then, someone struck her with a heavy blow on the back of her neck. She tried to fight back, but her arms were held tightly from behind, so she couldn't move them. Cold, heavy handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists, locking her hands together. {MORETTI SYNDICATE} {INSIDE ALESSANDRO OFFICE} Elena sat on the floor, her eyes glued to the man standing right before her, holding a lighter in his right hand. She doesn't know his name, but she knows him and she has been here before, the day before her father went missing. “Welcome back to the Syndicate Elena Cruz, it's good to see you again after two years,” he purred, but Elena sat there not knowing the right words to say at the moment. He took a step forward, the click of his expensive shoes echoing against the floor. He bent down to her level, looking at her straight into her eyes, his thumb wiping away a few of the tears on her face. “ You've grown, Elena,” he murmured, his voice so low that you could hardly hear him but it still carried a natural strong aura. “But you're still as reckless as the night you followed your father into my lion's den”. Elena leaned forward, her chains rattling against the floor. “Where is my father?” Elena asked calmly, looking at him straight in his eyes. “Where is my father, you bastard? Answer me!!!!!!!!!!” She shouted with tears building up in her eyes. Alessandro flicked his lighter, the flame dancing in his dark eyes. “He's dead,” he drawled with his face carrying no expression. He stood putting the lighter into his pocket, looking down at her teary face with a terrifying lack of emotion. Elena back met the wall as she was about to fall, with tears falling freely from her eyes. “What did you say?” She asked again, with a low voice wanting to be sure of what she heard. “I said he….. is…. dead,” Alessandro repeated again, reciting it one after the other so she could hear it perfectly. Elena scoffed, before wiping the tears from her face and looked at him dead in the eyes. “Then you better kill me too,” she spat. “Because if you don't, I'll kill you and burn everything you own”. Suddenly, a sharp, icy sting pierced the side of her neck. She gasped, her eyes widening as she looked at Alessandro one last time. “Sleep, Elena,” he murmured, his voice the last thing she heard before she passed out.
