Days be Numbered

(Marcus P.O.V) It had been roughly 12 quiet days in the castle, I had spent most of them with my nose in books looking into ways to kill Vampires at a distance. I had found a total of three possible ways that would work in our situation. Now we had the daunting task of getting Kataya out of the castle and on to transportation, this became my biggest concern since O’Flynne barely left her side for any length of time. I was sitting in my office trying to think of possible ways to lure O;Flytnne away from Kataya tht would be convincing enough that would work. When I heard the secret door open, I looked up and saw Erik come in, this was odd it was a little past midday, I knew that because lunch had already been served. This also meant that the household was busy with lunch and dinner preparations, so I could see how this would be a good time to steal away. He walked over and sat down in the chair he sighed then spoke: “I have news a letter came in two days ago, I just heard about it, a representative of the High Order is coming they should be here by early evening. There are plans for dinner for The Master, O’Flynne as well as Kataya. After dinner she is returning to her room the O’Flynne will be joining The Master and the High Order representative to discuss some business. Since this will more than likely be the longest time that O’Flynne is away from her that is guaranteed I will grab her and put her on transport to the Dragon.” “This is perfect, O’Flynne will either lose control and lose his supposed second lease on life and be killed by the representative, or he will go and search for her. Either way he will be out of our way, then we can kill The Master at the earliest opportunity.” I said. “Alright, I will get everything set. Just so you know things are getting tense out there for me. I have to time things perfectly for everything or we are done.” Erik said and left. I understood his concern this job had not exactly lived up to the easy job it was describe to be. It was supposed to be a job of gain trust, get to where we could get close enough and be done. Instead it has been a s**t show. But things were finally starting to look as if luck was on our side once again, which meant we would be leaving soon, Oh Thank the Gods. Then money from the sale of Kataya was really just a bonus at this point. The Master thought that land and a title were a kindness to some with nothing, ha, I did not want his land, nor did I care what happened to his household. What I cared about was there being one less Vampire in the world. Things were starting to go well I prayed that our luck would hold. The day crept by at what seemed to be the pace of a snail. I could hear the servants hurrying to get there tasks done. Waiting and not knowing what was going on was the worse thing in the world I finally decided. The day had been fairly noise around the house, then it was silent, I knew that silences the representative from the High Order was here. Finally we would see if things would go smoothly or if I had made my own grave, I prayed that things would go smoothly. As the thought of prayer crosses my mind I remembered my mother, she had been a strong believer in the gods. I then remembered the day the gods did not answer her or my pray to save us, from the Vampire Lords anger. We were hiding in the back of the house, the smell of smoke filled my nose, it was the smoke of wood and flesh. A smell you never forget, she held Erik and me close, and we prayed. We prayed that we would be spared, that we would not be found. I was seven years old, Erik was nine years old. When the Vampire Lord burst into the house Mother put herself between us and the Vampire. He grabbed her, I saw as he ripped her throat out with his fangs, the blood that flew across the room, I watched the light in her I faded. Erik grabbed a broken broom handle kept me behind him as we climbed out the window. Ever since that day I have not believed in the gods, for if the gods were truly real, they could have saved her, but they did not. I came back to the present, I knew Erik would not risk coming back tonight, I would have to wait and hope for the best. I could hear enough of the goings on in the house that I would be able to tell if he was successful. It was finally dinner time, a servant brought me my food, I ate not because I was hungry. I ate because I was bored, I hoped that if I was busy with something that time would speed up a little. I had been sitting in my common area and think for sometime, when I heard a servant scream then yell: “SHE’S GONE!” Erik had done it. I heard a great deal of commotion, servant running around, I got up and went to my bed chambers I hurriedly got ready for bed and sat down in the chair next to the fire, grabbed a book. I wanted to have the set up ready in case someone came asking if I knew anything. To my surprise The Master came, I expected O’Flynne to be the one to come and question me. “Marcus, do you happen to know anything about what happened to Kataya?” The Master asked. “No, My Lord, I’ve been here, I was reading some before bed. My Lord has something happen?” I replied. “Yes, something happened, but if you do not know anything, I will take my leave.” The Master said. He turned and left my chambers, Oh Thank the Gods. The first part of the plan had gone off with out a hitch. Erik knew his way in and out of this castle that I was sure he made to where he should have been with out any issues. I sat there for a bit to calm my nerves. The next day I listened to the servants that came and went by my door. The representative from the High Order was till here, interesting, perhaps the stories were actually true about O’Flynne. I hoped that this extra distraction would work in our favor. It was late afternoon when Erik came to my office, he entered he did not sit down but spoke: “I cannot stay long, the house is crawling with every f*****g servant looking for Kataya. I got her to the transport. She will be there within three days. I need the plans for The Master.” He was tense and he spoke very quick, things were either going well or he was worried. I knew that things could get complicated so I wrote down the list of possible ways to kill The Master. I pulled out the paper and held it out and spoke quickly: “This is a list of the most reliable ways to kill a Vampire without getting close. Each one has an outline of what to do.” “Good I have to go.” he said took the paper and left. So far things were going according to plan, I knew at this point it would be even harder for Erik to make it back with any information, which meant I was clueless as to what was happening from this point on. It had been over five days since Erik had been to my office, things in the house were mostly normal there were more voices than normal. I was starting to get worried that something had happened to Erik, he was always the stronger one in a fight of the two of us. I was a thinker, he was a fighter. Its why we were so good at hunting Vampires. I could out think most situations and he could fight and hide far faster and longer than I. It was late I heard the secret door in my office open slowly, I came from my bed chambers, and saw it was Erik he was white as a sheet. I saw something I had not seen since we were kids, fear. Erik the big brother and fighter of the two of us was scared almost to death. “What's wrong Erik?” I asked “Everything, we have to go NOW!” Erik replied. “Erik, what has happened?” I asked. “What has not happened would be a better question. The Dragon was angered that the bitches condition was not perfect. So much so that he has put a contract out for your and mine capture. The Master heard about the contract, and figured it was an inside job. Which means I have been interrogated since sunset until they had dinner. But since the Dragon did not put who wants our capture just a deliver location still do not know that we sold the b***h. There is a group of mercenary half orcs here. We have to go. NOW!” Erik replied. I stood a moment thinking, he looked exhausted which meant he was not thinking clearly he was scare, hell I was scared. But we had a job to do, and we were so close to getting it done we could not quit now. But this situation had to be handle carefully. “Erik if we left would that not confirm everyone's suspicion of us?” I asked “Yes, but staying will get us killed.” he said “Possibly, but we will die in the line of honor, remembered as those who died trying to rid human kind of Vampires.” I said. “True, yet we would have failed in our task.” he said. “Stay true brother, we will strike at The Master soon. We hold to the fact we know nothing and we will get out of here alive if we do.” I reassured him “Alright, I will look for an opportunity. Everything is set.” he said “Good. Now go and get some rest.” I said “It’s nearly dawn. We will need will our wits about us if we are to accomplish this.” I said. He nodded in agreement and left, this whole thing made me nervous The Master had figured out that it as an inside job. That also meant he had figured out that we sold her and the buyer was not happy with her condition, meaning if we did not kill him soon we were more than likely not going to leave her alive. The next few days were oddly quiet, I tried my best to stay calm and to not left my mind think about the possible ways that The Master would kill me. One evening my dinner was brought as usual I was eating when I heard a loud sound of fighting in the house. Servants were yelling, then The Masters voice booming through the house, I could not make out what he said. I had moved to the common area of my chambers, I had a sword within reach, as well as a wooden stake hidden in my robes. I stood there waiting for a sound or for someone to come knocking. It was quiet I was scanning my room when I thought I heard my door open, I looked back quickly it was closed. Nothing was moved like wind had blown it. I stood there tense everything in my body screamed for me to run, I knew that feeling, I was being hunted. Everything was too quiet, the whole castle felt as if it was hold it’s breath. I looked around my room again, there was nothing here I was sure of it. That when it hit me, a chill that went to my very core, as if my bones themselves were frozen. A sharp pain came at he back of my head, then everything was dark.
