Chapter 3: "The Family Secret"
As the day wore on, the Okoyes settled into a comfortable rhythm, catching up on old times and sharing stories. Lola listened with rapt attention, her journalist instincts on high alert. She sensed that there was more to this family than met the eye.
As they sat down to lunch, Mrs. Okoye brought up a sensitive topic. "Tunde, dear, we need to talk about your father's business."
Tunde's eyes narrowed. "What about it, Mother?"
Mr. Okoye's face turned red. "Your mother and I have been worried about the direction the company is heading. Your father's decisions have been... questionable, lately."
Tunde's expression turned guarded. "What are you talking about, specifically?"
Mrs. Okoye hesitated. "Well, there have been rumors of fraud, embezzlement... We're not sure what to believe."
Lola's ears perked up. This was getting interesting.
Tunde's voice was calm, but his eyes betrayed a hint of anger. "I'll look into it, Mother. But I can't promise anything."
Tobi's eyes widened. "Tunde, do you think Father is involved in something illegal?"
Tunde's gaze locked onto hers. "I don't know, Tobi. But I'll find out."
Lola's mind raced with possibilities. She had a feeling that this was just the tip of the iceberg. "Can I ask a question?" she ventured.
"Of course, Lola," Mrs. Okoye replied. "What is it?"
"Well, I was wondering... has anything unusual happened in the company lately? Any unexpected changes or decisions?"
Mr. Okoye's eyes darted to his wife, then back to Lola. "Now that you mention it, there has been something strange going on. Your father has been acting... differently, lately."
"Differently?" Tunde's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Mr. Okoye hesitated. "He's been making decisions without consulting us, his partners. And he's been... distant, lately."
Lola's journalist instincts kicked in. This was getting juicier by the minute. "I think I need to do some digging," she said, her mind racing with possibilities.
Tunde's eyes locked onto hers. "Be careful, Lola. You don't know what you're dealing with."
Lola smiled, her heart racing with excitement. "That's what I'm counting on."
