Eternal midnight

The stars stretched endlessly above them, shimmering like scattered diamonds against the velvet sky. The cool night breeze carried the scent of rain, the distant rustling of leaves whispering like secrets between the trees. Standing at the edge of the world—where the land met the sky in a never-ending abyss—Evelyn realized she was no longer afraid. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, she wasn’t running. She wasn’t fighting. She was simply here, in this moment, with him. Caius stood beside her, his presence as familiar as her own heartbeat. His gaze was steady, as if he were memorizing her every feature, committing every second of this moment to memory. He had spent lifetimes alone, watching the world change while he remained the same. But now, he wasn’t alone. “You’re quiet,” he murmured, his voice softer than usual, as if he, too, was afraid of breaking the fragile peace between them. Evelyn turned to him, smiling. “I’m just thinking.” Caius tilted his head slightly, his lips twitching at the corners. “Dangerous.” She laughed, the sound light, unburdened. “Not this time.” She reached for his hand, their fingers intertwining with an ease that spoke of trust, of something deeper than words could explain. “I was thinking about us.” His amusement faded into something more solemn, more intense. “And what have you decided?” Evelyn took a deep breath, feeling the weight of everything that had brought them here—every battle, every choice, every moment of hesitation and longing. She had spent so long resisting, afraid to lose herself in him, afraid of what loving him would mean. But she wasn’t afraid anymore. She looked into his eyes, those endless pools of midnight, and finally gave him the answer he had been waiting for. “That eternity doesn’t seem so bad,” she whispered, “as long as I have you.” Caius stilled. For a long moment, he simply looked at her, something unreadable flashing across his face. And then, in a blink, he pulled her to him, his arms encircling her as if she might disappear. “You’ll have me,” he promised, his voice raw. “Always.” She smiled against his chest, her fingers curling into the fabric of his coat. He had been her enemy once. A mystery. A force of nature she had tried—and failed—to resist. And now? Now he was her home. Evelyn lifted her head, meeting his gaze once more. There was no hesitation this time, no second-guessing. She rose onto her toes, closing the small distance between them, and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was slow, unhurried—nothing like the desperate, stolen moments they had shared before. It was warm and deep, filled with the quiet certainty that neither of them had to run anymore. There was no war between them now. No fear. No fate trying to tear them apart. When they finally pulled away, Caius rested his forehead against hers, his breath mingling with her own. “So,” he murmured, “what happens now?” Evelyn turned, looking out at the vast world before them. It was waiting. Endless. The unknown stretched before them like a story yet to be written. She squeezed his hand, a slow smile curving her lips. “Now, we write our own story.” The night wrapped around them, endless and full of promise. There would be challenges ahead, of course. There always were. But for the first time, Evelyn wasn’t afraid of what the future held. Because she wouldn’t be facing it alone. She glanced at Caius once more, taking in the way he looked at her—like she was his beginning and his end, his reason for eternity. And as they stepped forward, disappearing into the night, she knew one thing for certain. This wasn’t the end. It was only the beginning
