26 Evangelia said nothing. They heard the doors of the police van slamming and the voice of an officer telling onlookers to move away. The sound of vehicles leaving was followed by silence. Day and Evangelia sat opposite one another without a word. Knowing what he knew, believing what he now believed, Day felt his breath become more shallow. His placed a mask of impassivity on his face and waited, saying nothing and staring directly at the woman. She looked surprised, as if she had expected his sympathy or words of comfort. Gradually the vulnerability left her face. After several minutes she abruptly stood up and ordered him out of her house. Day told her to sit down.
