15 The big Blue Star ferry approached the island, executed its turn in the harbour and reversed into the port. Without delay the seamen lowered the heavy vehicle ramp, which scraped noisily back and forward on the concrete of the jetty with the gentle movement of the ship until the men had secured the vessel. The policeman on duty blew his whistle a great many times, issuing instructions to passengers and vehicles which few managed to interpret. Everyone was in a hurry, not least the ferry itself, which was on a tight schedule. The passengers who wanted to embark, Alex included, were ushered aboard at the same time as those descending made their way to dry land.
