The heavily fortified castle keep had originally been designed as a place of last resort when the Tower had come under siege, and that seemed chillingly appropriate tonight. It was testament to the enduring strength of the building that it remained in relatively good condition, though few of the people now sheltering within its walls held out much hope of it remaining strong ‘til morning.
