Kaira had worried the elevator might be in poor repair, seeing as it seemed Doug was the only one to have used it in possibly hundreds of years. But as she and the family entered it felt in good condition. There wasn’t even much dust, but somehow it felt old. Or was that just because she knew it had been hidden for so long? Doug was the last in, and he used the controls to shut the doors and start it descending. The doors whispered closed, and the descent was smooth and silent, so much so Kaira begin to feel as if they weren’t even moving. The indicator showing the floor they were on was flickering rapidly. Nothing else changed at all. “When they built the tower they built it well,” said Doug. Kaira had to agree. Then she remembered the question she’d wanted to ask him earlier.
