I hang up, furiously tempted to call her again. My ribs hurt, and the punches I got earlier in the day had nothing to do with it. A gray van is parked in the parking lot I’m waiting in leaning against my Pontiac. It’s Erik driving while Jo’s passed out in the passenger seat, sunglasses on his nose, mouth wide open. I stand up and approach the door and open it gently, gesturing to Erik to keep quiet. Then I bring my mouth to Jo’s ear and scream as loud as possible: “Wake up, you lazy bastard!” He jumps comically in his seat and even loses his glasses which fall on his thighs.
