THE CAST OUT AND THE LAST EMBER
EPISODE 1: THE CAST OUT AND THE LAST EMBER*
When Elara Rosegold was cast out for loving the forbidden Moonlight Dance, she swore to prove the kingdom wrong.
Rejected by the Helarian Royal Dance Academy in Luminara, where dance is law, money and power, she builds her own crew - six broken dancers the realm laughed at. Led by Elara, Cassian Goldcrest, Valerie Crystalfrost, Kael Aurelian, Seraphina Lumera and Caspian Lyre, they call themselves The Last Ember.
From stolen choreography to a royal battle for the studio, from betrayal by her former partner Ariella Nightrose and her elite ensemble AR1, to a championship that leaves them with only five thousand Gold Crowns and thirty days to survive.
One dance to save them all. Will they rise or disband forever?
Luminara is built of white crystal that reflects the sky. Every street glows when you step in rhythm. Every tower hums when you dance correctly. In this kingdom, dance is not just entertainment. Dance is law. Dance is money. Dance is power. The Helarian Royal Dance Academy controls everything. It teaches only the Gold Dances. Gold Dances are perfect mathematics. Every finger at forty five degrees. Every leap exactly four feet. No feeling. No freedom.
Before the Gold Dances, there was an older dance called the Moonlight Dance of Luminara. It was danced barefoot under true full moon with no music. The dancer's heartbeat was the drum. When it was danced truly, moonlight gathered under the feet like water. It was banned two hundred years ago because it made people feel too much.
Elara Rosegold was born to dance it. House Rosegold was one of the five High Houses. Her mother Lady Calista was once the lead of AR1. Her father Lord Edric died when she was three. Her mother raised her with one purpose. Be perfect. Lead AR1. Restore house honor. Elara was perfect. At seven years old, twelve pirouettes. At twelve, she choreographed a full Gold Waltz. At fifteen, judges called her once in fifty years.
But perfect felt like prison. When she danced Gold Dances she felt like a doll. When she danced alone at night barefoot, she felt alive.
Her only friend was Ariella Nightrose. Ariella was from the middle city but more perfect than highborns. Cold, beautiful, disciplined. They promised to enter AR1 together as partners forever.
The night before the AR1 final audition, a Blue Moon rose. It happens once every seven years. Its light hit the forbidden wing. Elara could not sleep. She went to the forbidden wing. A mural glowed. A woman made of moonlight danced. Elara's body moved. She kicked off her expensive shoes, bare feet on cold marble, and danced her loneliness, her pressure, her secret love for dance itself. Moonlight pooled under her feet.
Matron Severina caught her. She beat her with a cane and called her moon-touched. The next morning instead of audition there was a trial. Head Matron Vania said Elara performed the banned Moonlight Dance. She was expelled and stripped of her house name.
Elara looked at Ariella and begged with her eyes to say something. Ariella stood in perfect white audition dress and said in a clear cold voice, I always knew Elara was unstable. Too emotional to be Helarian dancer. I am ashamed I ever called her partner. That cut deeper than the cane.
Lady Calista did not look at her daughter. She said you are no longer Rosegold. Leave before sunset.
Elara left with one bag, old practice shoes, and a bleeding foot. On the Academy steps she swore she would prove the kingdom wrong. Broken dances and broken people can be beautiful.
Luminara has two cities. Upper Mirror is gold and glass and perfect. Under-Mirror is where pipes leak, light crystals are cracked, and people dance for Crowns thrown on the street. Elara tried to survive there. She danced on corners. People said Academy trash. She slept under a bridge.
There she met Cassian Goldcrest. Twenty three years old, golden hair dirty, golden eyes dull. Once he was the male prodigy, heir to Goldcrest Bank, supposed to partner Ariella in AR1. A year ago during a lift Ariella deliberately let him fall to make herself look like a victim who tried to save him. His left knee shattered in three places. Doctors said he would never dance professionally again and would walk with a limp forever. His family was ashamed of a crippled Goldcrest and gave him a small allowance and told him never to come home. He was drunk teaching a merchant's daughter a plie for two Crowns when Elara danced the Moonlight Dance in an abandoned warehouse full of glowing blue mushrooms that only grow where moonlight once touched the ground. As she danced the mushrooms glowed brighter. Cassian felt his knee for the first time in a year not hurt. For three seconds he was weightless. He said teach me. He became the second member of The Last Ember.
Valerie Crystalfrost was twenty two, six foot one tall, snow skin, ice blue hair, princess of the Southern Ice Realm sent to Luminara as a political hostage to learn Helarian grace to marry well. But Valerie has crippling stage fright. Her heart beats so fast she faints. During the Academy entrance she vomited on Head Matron's shoes. She was laughed out. She worked as a living statue in the market, painted white, standing still eight hours for five Crowns. She believed she was worthless. Elara found her because Valerie was the only person in Under-Mirror who stood perfectly still. Elara said you think stillness is failure? Stillness is power. She choreographed a piece where Valerie stands frozen like ice then slowly thaws into movement. It made people cry. Valerie joined.
Kael Aurelian was twenty, a ghost who watched through Academy windows. No parents. He lived in a one room shack with three sisters Mira six, Lina four, Suri two. Parents died of fever. He learned dance watching rich kids copying in mud. His style was fire, fast, low to the ground, like capoeira mixed with fighting. He was rejected from auditions. A guard said you smell like sewage. We do not take rats. He stole bread to feed his sisters. He told Elara dancing does not fill belly. Elara offered twenty percent of everything they ever win. Then we dance until it does. He joined for his sisters but stayed because for the first time someone saw him as a dancer not a thief.
Seraphina Lumera was twenty three, a ghost of AR1. Before Ariella, Seraphina was lead. She was perfect and emotional, the rarest kind. She was loved. Then Ariella wanted her spot. Ariella spread a rumor with fake love letters that Seraphina slept with Judge Corvin to get lead. It was not true. Judge Corvin was sixty and hated Seraphina. But in Luminara if a girl is accused she is guilty. Seraphina was stripped of AR1, her fiance left that night, she tried to jump from the North Tower. She survived but broke her lower back. Now she sewed costumes in Under-Mirror with her face veiled and hands shaking convinced she was ruined. Elara knelt and said they broke your story. Let us write a new one where you live. Seraphina said I cannot dance. I am broken. Elara said we are all broken. That is why we need you. She became the technique master.
Caspian Lyre was eighteen, youngest. Son of the royal drummer. He was born with one ear completely deaf and the other only thirty percent hearing. He feels vibration through floorboards. He never spoke in Academy because kids mocked his voice as deaf voice. Matrons said dance is music made visible. If you cannot hear music perfectly you cannot be dancer. He drummed in Under-Mirror for coins with drums made of trash cans. Elara did not ask him to hear. She put her hand on the floor and said make us feel. Caspian cried. No one ever asked him to make others feel. They always told him he could not feel.
Six broken dancers the realm laughed at. They took the mushroom warehouse, cleaned it, named it Lumina Studio after the forbidden Moon Goddess. They called themselves The Last Ember because Helaria took their beat away and they were going back to take it.
There were also important royal names in the Academy. Isolde Ravencrest, twenty one, raven black hair, ice blue eyes, AR1 second in command, Ariella's enforcer. Perfect but cruel. Lysander Blazeford, twenty four, tall, auburn hair, instructor cloak, warm eyes but stern face. Senior instructor and former AR1 male lead. He secretly studied Moonlight Dance history.
They had no money for music license so they stole beats. They hacked street crystal speakers and tapped Academy practice tracks. They trained like monsters from six in the morning till midnight. Elara taught them Moonlight Dance fused with flaws. Cassian's limp became a famous slide no perfect dancer could copy. Valerie's frozen panic became a statue then explosion that made crowds scream. Kael's fight became power. Seraphina's sorrow became a solo that made even cruel merchants cry. Caspian's drums became heartbeat.
One rainy night during Night Market they hijacked the giant memory crystal screen above the market fifty feet tall and performed without permission. No announcement. Elara in center in blue dress like moonlight barefoot with six dancers behind. A little girl named Lili recorded with her mother's cheap crystal orb and uploaded to the Crystal Network. In the morning one hundred thousand views. In the evening one million. Common people commented they dance like us. They fall. They get up. Queen Selene Luminara, forty five, ruler of Helaria, saw it. She had watched AR1 dance perfectly for ten years and was bored. Perfect is boring. She was secretly daughter of a Moonlight Dancer though she hid it. She was intrigued.
Ariella Nightrose was now leader of AR1 with five perfect girls who worshipped her and she was furious. She marched to the palace and said these gutter dancers insult Academy. I demand Royal Battle. Royal Battle is ancient law. Any crew can challenge any other crew for studio rank and funding. Loser disbands forever. Judges are nobles and Queen. She challenged The Last Ember. Terms, if AR1 wins they take Lumina Studio and The Last Ember can never dance in Luminara again. If The Last Ember wins they get official Rank Five and two thousand Gold Crowns.
The battle was in the Grand Hall with three thousand nobles and crystal chandeliers. AR1 danced first. Frosted Gold. Perfect. Synchronized. They used light magic to make snow fall indoors. Flawless. Cold. No one felt anything but everyone clapped because perfect. Then The Last Ember. No matching costumes. Cassian knee brace visible. Valerie hands shaking. Seraphina veiled. Music started, Caspian drums made of trash cans sounding like war. Elara whispered one beat. They performed The Broken Crown. It started with each dancer falling intentionally. In Gold Dance falling is death. Here falling was beginning. When Seraphina fell Cassian caught her. When Cassian knee buckled Kael and Caspian lifted him onto shoulders and he danced in air. Valerie froze mid stage ten seconds pure panic then exploded into fastest spins anyone ever saw. Kael danced with baby sister Suri on back. At climax Elara stepped forward and did full forbidden Moonlight Dance. The glass roof sealed for two hundred years cracked open by itself. True moonlight flooded even though it was day. Floor glowed blue. Mushrooms grew on stage. Silence. Then Queen Selene stood and clapped slowly. Then all commoner servants clapped. Then even nobles. The Last Ember won. They won Lumina Studio officially Rank Five and two thousand Gold Crowns.
