"Back off, you bloodsucker!" a gruff voice commanded from behind.
Rain knew that voice. She could recognize it anywhere and anytime.
Helios Castillo.
She heaved a sigh of relief when the vampire left her neck and turned to look at who was talking to him. She has never been grateful for Helios' presence all her life.
When the man who held her to a tree moved away from her, she saw the hunky figure of Helios standing a few feet away from them. The car headlight hid his face, making him appear like a silhouette. His hands were stuck in his pockets and his stance was lopsided. She has never realized how large and tall he was until now. The man that was holding her snickered as he moved toward Helios.
"Or what, doggy?" the vampire sneered.
Rain stayed glued to the tree, scared of moving an inch. It was like a scene from a horror movie and she didn't even know what to do. She fingered the necklace her mother had given her. Her mother had said it was a talisman and was supposed to protect her, but she didn't know exactly what it was protecting her from. Her mother had warned her sternly against removing it from around her neck, on no account was she to remove it from her neck. But now, she felt like she was in danger that even the talisman couldn't wade away. She rubbed her finger over the stone-like pendant as if doing so was going to make everything fade away.
Maybe it was all a dream and she would wake up and find out that she'd had a nightmare and her mother would be there sitting beside her bed and ready to give her a comforting hug. But it was way too real to be a dream, the grip of the vampire on her neck still stung and she could feel the blood pumping into her head.
She could run away from there, but what if she falls into another danger? Jenny and Drake were on their way, maybe they would help her out. They were the only ones she could trust right now. She watched as the vampire man walked toward Helios, who was still standing there without moving.
She didn't remember again which was the strongest, the vampires or the werewolves. She remember that a bite from one was fatal to the other, but she didn't know which anymore, she wasn't thinking straight.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket, making her jump. She took it out and realized her hands were shaking. Jenny flashed on the screen and when she tried to slide to the answer button, a force blew past her like a breeze and her phone was gone from her hands. She looked around and saw another guy standing a few feets to her right. He was pale and smiled at her. She saw his fangs and her heart sank low in her abdomen. She grabbed the hem of her blouse tightly.
Another vampire.
There were other vampires around. It was not only the one that had taken her. But why were they after her? The thing the first vampire said rang in her head.
You have something I need.
What was that they wanted from her? What could they possibly want? Helios quickly grabbed the vampire who had attacked her on the neck and hefted him up like he was weightless. She couldn't see his eyes, but she knew he must be very furious and his orbs would be darker than normal. He tossed him far away, the man crashed to the ground and Helios charged toward him.
The other vampire who had ceased her phone came at her, but a car drove up toward them immediately and came to an abrupt stop, the tire screeching on the gravel, making the man coming for her come to a halt. She looked between the man and the car in confusion and dread.
What was going on?
Three hefty men came out of the car and came towards them. Who are those? She glanced over at Helios and the other man who were fighting themselves to death. When she looked back at the other vampire who had taken her phone, he was no longer there and one of the men that had just come out of the car went after him.
She figured those were Helios' pack. Probably the warriors. Werewolves usually hunt in packs. She didn't know whether to be grateful or not, but it was a good thing that they were distracted by each other. Just then another force breezed past her and clashed with one of the men from the car and she saw them land on the floor, rolling over and over, each wanting to take over the other. There were more vampires around here. What would have happened if it was only Jenny and Drake?
The other man from the car, signaled her to stay calm. He looked around carefully as if searching for anyone lurking around. When another vampire lunged at him, he was faster, he grabbed the vampire in the air and shoved him away, then charged toward his opponent.
Rain was left alone again. She didn't know if she should hide behind a tree or run away. There were a few houses in front and she can seek help from them. The vampires and the wolves were busy fighting themselves. There has been an age-long rivalry between them, they just have to find a reason to fight themselves and tonight, she was that reason.
She slowly went behind the tree to hide. She watched as Helios fought the vampire, tossing him up and down. Then she squatted to catch her breath, putting her hand to her chest to calm herself down. Her eyes caught something in the bushes, it was glowing. What could that be? She looked from behind the trees, the supernatural beings were still fighting. She began to crawl toward the glow and luckily, none of them noticed her.
She got to the spot and found out it was her phone. Jenny's name still flashed on it and it was still vibrating. She quickly grabbed it and stood on her feet.
"You should come with me. I know a safe place for you to stay," a voice said behind her.
She spun and found a man standing not far away from her. His face was masked by the darkness, but she could make out his silhouette. She put the phone in her pant pocket and turned to face the man fully.
"Who are you and why should I trust you?"
"Because I am like you." The man took a step forward, stretching out his hand towards her. "Grab my hand and come."
Rain suddenly felt compelled, but something inside her kept fighting back. She felt her legs moving on their own as the man's hand was still outstretched to her. A force was drawing her to the man, but she was resisting.
"Come, my dear," the man's smooth and soothing voice urged her, sounding like many whispers to her ears.
A scream tore through her throat but the sound couldn't come out. Tears have already pooled up in her eyes and she prayed more than ever that it was just a dream.
Helios couldn't sense her again. He stopped for a moment and looked by the tree trunk she was standing at when he arrived, but she wasn't there. He darted his eyes from one place to the other, but she wasn't there, all he saw were warriors from his pack dealing with the bloodsuckers. Just as he tried to leave, the vampire he was fighting with lunged at him and almost feasted his fangs on his neck, but he was faster and stronger, he put his hand between the face of the man behind him and shoved him away from him.
He was glad he followed his instincts earlier. When the truck picked Rain up and she went in without looking back or any hesitation, he smelt a vampire, but in a world where everyone was friends with another, he felt they knew each other and besides he was new in town. And after telling him off so much, he decided to let her be, but his mind didn't rest and he kept thinking about that trail.
He called Markus his younger brother and Darren his cousin to gather the warriors. He told them he didn't have time to explain but they needed to save someone who was being taken by a vampire. He had turned on his GPS and had followed the truck Rain had entered.
His instincts had been right. He didn't make himself noticed, so he had followed them at a distance, trying hard to drive through the night without his headlights on. The car had come to an abrupt stop and he knew something was going on. He slowly moved out of his car and went into the woods, hiding and stalking the car.
He had seen Rain climb out of the car and started walking away fast. He had watched the whole scene and had decided to appear when he did. Vampires were no match for him, but the one that stood in front of him was a delicate case. He was feeble. When the guy had lunged at him, he had grabbed him on the neck and tossed him far away. He had felt his temper rise at that moment, but he couldn't understand why.
He had a mad temper that could be fatal when it was triggered and tonight, it had been triggered. He hit the man with mad rage for daring to put his hand on Rain. Then he felt it. She was in danger and needed saving.
He turned and glanced at the tree but she wasn't there. He moved toward the tree. Darren and Markus and Andre were still fighting with the other vampires. He went around the tree and froze at the sight before him.
Witches were manipulative and could control nature and right now, a witch was compelling Rain. He wanted to take a step forward but halted. First, it was the vampires and now a witch. What can a human possibly have for supernatural beings to be after her like that? He needed to be in his wolf form if he was going to fight with a witch.
As Rain kept fighting to break away from the spell of the man in front of her. Another force whisked her away and tossed her farther into the woods. She hit the truck of a tree and fell on the grass with a thud. Blood rushed into her head and pain shot through her whole body, she tried to stand but she couldn't, her legs wobbled. She fought back the tears that were threatening to burst and fought the dizziness weighing her down. She didn't see anybody around her or the one that had tossed her away, she went on her hands and knees and felt her neck to be sure her necklace was still there and sighed with relief when she felt it. She grabbed a stake lying on the grass just for protection, although she knew it would hardly serve as one. She tried to stand up again and this time, she managed to stand. She could see the people still fighting on the road.
She appreciated that Helios and his pack came out to her rescue, but she couldn't wait around for them to win whatever fight it was, she had to be with her own kind, she had to be with humans. She tried to walk and realized her ankle was sprained. She limped ahead praying that none of them sees her again. But hardly had she finished her prayer when another smiling vampire appeared in her front. I got you first, he said with a smile.
It was not going to happen. She won't let another vampire touch her. It was time she fought for herself. She tighten her fingers around the broken branch and stuck it out to the vampire.
"If you come any closer, I will bury this deep into your heart!" she said, fighting hard to keep her voice firm.
The vampire smiled at her in mockery. "You know you can't do that honey." He took a step closer.
Rain watched him cautiously. Watched his every move as if she could tell when he lunges at her. No sooner has she finished that thought than the man lunged at her. She swung her arm on impulse and the man was in front of her, the stake buried into his shoulder blade, his eyes dilated and staring into hers. She left the stake and quickly moved away from him, he fell to the floor. She turned her back to run, but it was too late. Someone standing there hit her so hard on the face. She yelped and fell.
Everything went blank.
