Episode 3: The Bond Cracks

375 Words
Alpha Kael hadn’t slept since the rejection. The words had left his lips with certainty, but the silence that followed haunted him more than he expected. He thought it would feel like freedom. Instead, it felt like drowning. His chest felt hollow. Heavy. Every breath tasted wrong. He shifted, trained, hunted—nothing settled the growing ache inside him. His wolf was restless, agitated, and worst of all, angry. “She was weak,” Kael muttered, pacing across the training grounds. “An omega.” But if that were true, why did it hurt? Beta Coren approached quietly, watching Kael slam his fists into the post until blood coated his knuckles. Coren dropped a scroll at his feet. “Thought you’d want to see this.” Kael paused. The scroll glowed faintly. The Mate Bond Scroll. It was supposed to darken once the rejection was accepted on both sides. But it hadn't. “She didn’t accept it,” Coren said, folding his arms. “The bond’s still active.” Kael picked up the scroll and stared at it. The glow burned into his palms. His wolf growled low in his chest, unsettled by the truth. “She should’ve accepted it,” he said, jaw tightening. “But she didn’t,” Coren said. “And if it stays like that, it will affect you both. The bond is alive… just wounded.” Kael’s breath hitched. “Where is she?” “No one's seen her since we left her at the border,” Coren replied. “Should we track her?” Kael hesitated. The rational part of him wanted to say no. She meant nothing. She wasn’t worthy. But the ache said otherwise. “Send someone,” he muttered. “Discreetly.” He turned away before Coren could see the flicker of something strange—fear, maybe—cross his face. Miles away, Alera stood on a hill under the moonlight. Her silver eyes glowed, steady and calm. The bond still lingered inside her too, like a frayed thread. But she didn’t long for it. She didn’t miss him. She was preparing to bury it. And the girl Kael left to die was becoming the woman who would make him wish he’d never touched her soul.
