the necklace 63

Chapter 63 Vicky — Rick’s Mother’s POV I still couldn’t believe my son had found his mate. Rick had told me he was traveling to Alpha Parson’s pack for a Luna ceremony. Everything had seemed normal at first—until about four hours into the event when he suddenly mindlinked me, his voice tight with disbelief, telling me he had caught a scent. His mate’s scent. I warned him immediately. Scents could be deceiving, especially in a large gathering of wolves from different packs. He understood. My son had been raised to think before acting, especially when something as important as a mate bond was involved. Still, I was on edge. When he finally mindlinked me again, his emotions flooded through the bond—certainty, shock, and awe. She was real. She was truly his mate. He mentioned there had been a little drama, but she had handled herself well. That alone told me a lot. I wanted a woman for my son who could stand on her own, who wouldn’t crumble under pressure. From the way Rick described her, she sounded exactly like that. But I had my own test. If she truly wasn’t his mate, the necklace I carried would reveal the truth. If placed on someone who was not bound to my son by the mate bond, it would kill her instantly. Cruel, perhaps—but necessary. Mate bonds were sacred, and false claims had destroyed packs before. When we finally met her, I was surprised. She wasn’t what I expected at all. She had muscles on her arms—earned ones, not decorative—and confidence in the way she stood. When she smiled at us, it wasn’t nervous or fake. She simply said that a dress would do for the night, nothing more, nothing extravagant. I liked that. I already had the perfect dress in mind. It wasn’t a gown—just a simple black strapless dress. It covered everything important, elegant without being revealing. No need to show off cleavage. The girl was only eighteen, after all. Rick was twenty—only two years older. I led her to my room and had her sit down while I began doing her makeup. I kept it light; her skin was fair, and I made sure everything matched her complexion instead of overpowering it. When I finished, I moved on to her hair, curling it carefully before letting it fall back into place. A few soft curls framed her face, and I had to admit—it looked adorable. Then it was time for the dress. I pulled it from the wardrobe and held it out to her, gesturing for her to put it on. This was the moment that would tell me everything. She undressed and slipped the dress on. It fit her perfectly, hugging her form as if it had been made just for her. She looked beautiful—truly beautiful. I brought out the matching shoes and handed them to her, then turned to the jewelry laid out on the table. These were meant for her. I had bought them long ago, in the hope that one day my son would find his mate. The set was complete: earrings, a bracelet, a ring, and the necklace. Each piece matched flawlessly. Finally, I lifted the necklace and stepped behind her. If she had deceived my son—if she had somehow tricked him into believing she was his mate—this would reveal the truth. I clasped the necklace around her neck. It was a ruby necklace with a ruby pendant hanging delicately at her collarbone. If she was not his true mate, the glass would shatter, sending shards into her eyes. The poison embedded within would reach her heart and stop it from beating. I waited. Nothing happened. I nodded once. She nodded back, then spoke calmly, meeting my gaze. “I know about these things. You thought I was tricking your son. Are you satisfied now that I am his true mate?” I sighed. There was no reason to hide it anymore. She would be Luna of the pack now, and she deserved honesty. “I’m sorry, dear,” I said softly. “But I needed to be sure. Let me take this off—I have another one for you.” I unclasped the ruby necklace and set it aside. Then I picked up the necklace I had worn at my own ceremony and fastened it around her neck. I stepped back, taking her in. “You look beautiful, dear,” I said. “I’m sorry that I had to test you. But he is my only son, and I cannot allow anyone to stand beside him as Luna if they were deceiving him.” “It’s fine, I understand. I would have done the same thing. Thank you for welcoming me into the pack and into your family. I can’t wait for you to meet my parents.” “Well, I know Alpha Parson, but I can’t wait to meet your mother. Come on, it’s time for the ceremony—and my son is linking me, asking where his mate is, so let’s get going.” She let out a laugh, and we headed downstairs and outside toward the hall. Sometimes ceremonies were held outdoors, but with the cold settling in, this one was being held inside the building. Macey POV I couldn’t believe this woman had tried to kill me. Did she even know the necklace talks to you? I had heard it singing—it knew I was Rick’s mate. I didn’t hold it against her; she was only protecting her son. Still… geesh, a little warning next time would’ve been nice. We walked toward the hall, the cold air biting at my skin. It would probably snow soon—hopefully not before the warrior challenge. I was actually looking forward to that. It was going to be so much fun. We stepped onto the stage. “Hello, everyone. We are gathered here today for the Luna ceremony. As you all know, our son recently traveled to another pack for a visit, and while there, he found his mate. If there are no rejections, shall we begin?” She stepped aside as the elder approached. He smiled warmly, first at the crowd and then at me. In his hands was the same ceremonial rope—the very one used during my mother and father’s bonding. He moved to the center of the stage, paused, then stepped back slightly before beginning to speak.
