Prologue
Nisha Mehta is a twenty-eight year old first generation Indian American, from Boston, MA. She grew up with loving parents and an older sister. When she was eighteen she met Liam Murphy at a club in the seaport district of Boston. He was the definition of tall, dark and handsome with his jet black hair and blue eyes that reminded her of the deepest parts of the ocean. She had no idea that he was the future head of the Murphy crime family, and by the time she found out it was too late. All she cared about was Liam. When she was twenty her parents died in a car accident. After their deaths Pooja, Nisha’s sister, left Boston because she did want to be known as the sister of Liam Murphy’s girl. For eight years all she had was Liam and the Murphy family. She did not care when Liam slept with other women, because he would always come back to her. The others were nothing compared to Nisha. Then one day Liam met Fiona Ryan, the youngest daughter of Declan Ryan, head of the Ryan crime family. As soon as he met her it was like Nisha never existed. They had a connection that Nisha and Liam never had, they understood what it was like to grow-up in a world where wrong is right and right is wrong. When news broke out that Liam and Fiona were engaged Declan Ryan gave Nisha a choice. Leave Boston and never return, or die. The next day Nisha bought a bus ticket to New York city. That was two days ago. Currently Nisha is sitting in a dirty old motel room wondering what she was going to do next. The only money she had was a small life insurance payout she received after her parents death. The last ten years she had been living off a monthly allowance from Liam that allowed her buy the most expensive brands, eat at the most exclusive restaurants, and live in a condo with a monthly rent of five thousand. After crying for a day Nisha pulled herself together, she refused to cry over a man who didn’t love her anymore.  After eating breakfast at a small diner she found a public library and sat down at an open computer. There was only one person she could think of that might help her, and that was her sister. The last time Nisha talked to Pooja was a week after their parents funeral eight years ago. Pooja tried to convince Nisha to leave Liam and come with her to Seattle while she went to medical school. Nisha refused and they have not spoken since. She hoped that Pooja was still in Seattle. She googled her sister’s name along with the words doctor and University of Washington School of Medicine. She was able to find a news article on an online alumni magazine about Pooja opening up her own doctor’s office in Bonney Lake, Washington. Nisha looked up the office and wrote down the contact information. She left the library and headed back to her motel room. It took Nisha about an hour to work up the courage to call her sister. She took out the cheap prepaid cell phone she bought at the convenience store across the street, and dialed the number. After one ring what sounded like an older woman answered the phone. “Hello, this is Dr. Mehta’s Family Care, I’m Gretchen. How can I help you?” “Hello, may I speak to Dr. Pooja Mehta?” “And who should I say is calling?” “Her sister, Nisha.” She could hear Gretchen drop what sounded like a glass on the floor. “I’m sorry, can you repeat that?” “Gretchen! Is everything all right?” Nisha could never forget the sound of her sister’s voice. As soon as she heard it she could feel the tears threatening to fall. “I’m so sorry Dr., it was just me being clumsy, you have a call.” “Okay, give me the phone.” “I think you should take this in your office.” “Okay.” Nisha heard the music to signal she was on hold, but after a few seconds the music stopped. “Hello, this is Dr. Mehta.” “Didi…” The tears were running down freely now. “Nisha! Is that you?” All Pooja could hear over the phone were quite whimpers. “Nisha, what’s wrong? What did Liam do to you!?” “He’s getting married.” There was a pause. “But you’re not getting married?” “No. A few months ago he met someone and now I’m in New York.” “Why are you there?” “I had to leave Boston, it was the only ticket that could get me out of there the earliest.” “How much money do you have left?” “ I still have the five thousand from mama and daddy’s life insurance.” “Okay. I want you to go to the airport and get a plane ticket to Seattle. As soon as you have your flight information call me and give the info and I’ll pick you up at the airport.” “Are you sure?” “Of course I’m sure, you’re my sister. When you need me I’m here for you.” “Thanks Didi… I … I love you.” “I love you too.” After they said their quick goodbyes Nisha grabbed the only bag she had with her and got a taxi to take her to the airport. As soon as she arrived she went to the help desk and bought the last ticket on a flight to Seattle that will leave at 6:55pm with an estimated arrival time of 10:30pm. She called her sister and gave her the flight details. Now she had two hours to kill while she waited to board. Before Nisha got to the boarding gate she stopped at a small bookstore and bought a couple of magazines and a few books to keep her mind off Liam.. The sooner she leaves the east coast the better.
