45 Amelia's Conversion Amelia became aware bit by bit, as if her mind had been bound in fog. She could barely make sense of her surroundings. She went to sit up and found she couldn't. She breathed in sharply and tried to struggle against the bindings that bound her to the bed. Her breathing started coming in short, sharp breaths; there wasn't enough air. The world around her began to merge, flickering and grey compared to the natural coloured world that she knew. Amelia sobbed. She couldn't help herself. She couldn't remember how she had gotten here, nor what had happened. She remembered being in bed at the palace. She remembered Healer Bates coming and giving her tea.
