31 Treatment Devon woke groggy and confused, unsure of where he was or what had happened. He groaned and rolled over, recognising that he was in a comfortable bed, then he surged up in panic as he realised he was shackled. The chains were bolted to the wall, giving him limited room to move. He started to shake, not understanding what had happened; there were too many blanks in his memory, too many images of blood and death, atrocious acts that he was sure he had committed. The door to his cell opened, and a man and a woman walked in, smiling at him. Devon recognised the woman, Jenny; she was a healer that his parents had consulted about him having the Taint. “It’s all right, Devon, you’re safe now. Do you remember who I am?” Jenny smiled at him as she crossed the room to sit in a chair
