Emma noted the use of “officer” rather than police or village security personnel. ‘Where do you think they’re headed?’
Sarah shrugged. ‘Are they an item?’
Emma made a show of considering the matter. ‘I don’t believe so. I do know they’re long-term friends.’
‘So, they could be together?’
It was Emma’s turn to shrug. ‘Any sightings reported?’
‘Nothing, it’s as if they’ve disappeared off the face of the earth.’
Emma leaned forward. ‘Suicide is a possibility in Ted’s case. He once said he’d rather die than continue working on the front desk.’
‘A turn of phrase, Emma. He was due to be promoted next week and said he was looking forward to the challenge.’

‘Colin prefers not to announce promotions too far in advance.’
