Voices in the Dark

401 Words
The Forest of Whispers felt more ominous than ever as Amara and Kael pressed on toward the Hill of Echoes. The words of the hooded stranger lingered in Amara's thoughts. "The Oracle is waiting." After days of searching, she was finally on the brink of uncovering the truth. Yet, a nagging unease settled in her chest. As night descended, they set up camp beside a small stream, its water barely a trickle—just another reminder of the drought plaguing Amandi. Kael quickly drifted off to sleep, but Amara found herself wide awake. The forest was eerily quiet. No birds chirping. No insects buzzing. Just silence. Then, she heard it. A whisper. Soft and far away. "Turn back..." Amara shot upright. She scanned her surroundings but saw nothing. The voice came again, clearer this time. "Turn back, Amara..." Her heart raced. It almost sounded human. She stood up and cautiously stepped away from the campfire. The darkness between the trees felt alive. Then, another voice joined in. And another. Soon, a chorus of voices surrounded her. "Turn back." "The truth will destroy you." "Leave while you still can." Amara clamped her hands over her ears, but the whispers persisted, echoing from all directions. For a moment, panic threatened to engulf her. What if they were right? What if some secrets were better left undiscovered? But then she thought of the suffering kingdom—the wilting crops, the dry rivers, the terrified faces of those she loved. She recalled the Oracle's disappearance and the vow she had made to herself. She couldn’t turn back now. No matter what lay ahead. "No," she declared firmly into the darkness. "I've come too far." Suddenly, the whispers ceased. A strange tranquility enveloped the forest. Moonlight pierced through the clouds, revealing a narrow path leading toward the distant Hill of Echoes. Amara gazed at it, and for the first time, the way forward felt unmistakably clear. She returned to the camp, her eyes fixed on the hill in the distance. Tomorrow, she will finally reach it. Tomorrow, the enigma of the Missing Oracle would finally be unraveled. As the night grew deeper, a single voice floated on the breeze. Unlike the others, it had a gentle tone. Familiar. Filled with hope. "You're almost here." Amara's eyes widened in surprise. She recognized that voice. It was the Oracle. And somewhere beyond the shadows, the answers were waiting.
