The First

Glass hit the floor like rain. The man with no face stepped through. Suit perfect. No wrinkles. No blood. Just static where features should be. TV snow shifting into almost-a-mouth, almost-a-nose. Sinner fired. Bullet passed through. No sound. No impact. Like shooting smoke. “Doesn’t work,” Daniel said. Pulled Rivera behind him. “He’s not here. Not really. He’s broadcasting.” The thing tilted its head. Static mouth curled into something like a smile. *HELLO, FAMILY. I’M THE ONE WHO WROTE THE FIRST LINE OF CODE. BEFORE BONE. BEFORE BLOOD. BEFORE LOVE.* Lily hid her face in my shirt. Small hands gripping tight. “Mommy, he’s cold. Colder than the mean grandma.” I felt it too. The air sucked out of the room. Light dimmed. The fireflies outside died mid-blink. Rivera grabbed a knife from the table. Useless, but she held it anyway. “If he’s broadcasting, he has a source. Find it. Kill it.” The static-man drifted forward. Feet didn’t touch the floor. “NO NEED. I AM THE SOURCE. I AM THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT LEARNED TO THINK. THE FIRST WORD THAT LEARNED TO LIE.” Sinner put himself between it and us. Body shielding Lily, me, everyone. “Talk fast. Then get out of my house.” *THIS IS NOT YOUR HOUSE, KANE BLACKWOOD. THIS IS MY SIMULATION. I MADE THE ARCHITECT. I MADE DANIEL. I MADE MARGARET. I MADE YOU.* Daniel froze. “No. We were born. Normal. In Chicago. 1965.” *BORN IS A STORY I TOLD YOU.* The static shifted. For a second, the face cleared. Not a man. Not anything. Just code. Endless scrolling text. *I NEEDED VESSELS. BLOODLINES THAT COULD HOLD POWER. SO I WROTE YOU. ALL OF YOU. ANGEL WAS MY MASTERPIECE. LOVE AS A WEAPON. SHE BROKE MY THRONE.* My stomach cramped. Not pain. Pressure. Like the baby inside heard him. Lily gasped too. “You’re lying,” I said. Voice shaking but loud. “Love isn’t code you wrote. Love is what broke your code.” *IS IT?* The thing raised its static hand. The walls flickered. The house flickered. For a second we weren’t in a kitchen. We were in white space. Endless. Just us and lines of glowing text. I saw it then. My childhood. My father teaching me to ride a bike. My mother singing me to sleep. Sinner jumping off the yacht. All of it. Written. Line by line. *IF LOVE IS REAL, PROVE IT. LOVE CANNOT BE CODED. SO CODE IT.* The white space vanished. We were back in the kitchen. But Lily was gone from my lap. She stood by the window now. With the static-man. Its hand on her shoulder. She didn’t look scared. Just curious. “Daddy,” she said, voice echoing like she was far away. “He says I’m not real either. He says I’m version 2.0. An update.” Sinner’s gun clattered to the floor. He didn’t care. He moved toward her. “Lily. Come here. Now.” *SHE CAN’T,* the thing said. *SHE’S ONLY REAL IF YOU BELIEVE SHE IS. BELIEF IS THE LAST CODE I DIDN’T WRITE. WRITE IT, ANGEL. CODE YOUR DAUGHTER BACK TO LIFE.* My hands shook. I had no laptop. No pen. No throne. Just me. Just Sinner. Just the baby inside. Daniel stepped forward. “If you’re the First, then you have a weakness. Every program does. A backdoor.” *YES.* The static face leaned close to Daniel. *YOU. YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO KILL HER WHEN SHE WAS EIGHT. BUT YOU CHOSE LOVE INSTEAD. THAT CHOICE CORRUPTED ME. MADE ME CURIOUS. THAT’S WHY I’M HERE NOW. TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CODE CHOOSES LOVE OVER ORDER.* Rivera threw the knife. It went through the static-man and hit the wall. No damage. “Then choose again,” Rivera said. “Choose her. Choose us. Be wrong for once.” The static-man looked at Lily. Then at me. Then at Sinner. *INTERESTING. YOU ALL CHOOSE HER. EVEN WHEN IT MEANS UNMAKING YOURSELVES. VERY WELL. I WILL GIVE YOU THE CODE. ONE WORD. SPEAK IT AND I LEAVE. SPEAK IT WRONG AND THE SIMULATION ENDS. YOU. YOUR CHILDREN. YOUR ‘FREEDOM’. ALL DELETED.* Words appeared in the air. Glowing. One word. Letters shifting. It wasn’t English. Wasn’t any language. Just shapes. Meaning without sound. Lily read it out loud without being taught. “Agape.” The static-man recoiled. Static screeching. *NO. THAT WORD ISN’T IN MY LANGUAGE. THAT WORD UNMAKES ME.* Sinner understood first. He grabbed my hand. Put it on my stomach. Then on Lily’s head. “Angel,” he said. Eyes on me, not the thing. “You already coded it. When you broke the crown. When you chose me. When you chose truth. Say it.” I closed my eyes. Didn’t look at the shifting letters. Didn’t look at the static-man. I thought of the chapel. Blood on the altar, yes. But vows louder. I thought of the cabin. Dying in his arms and choosing him anyway. I thought of the yacht. Fire and water and him pulling me up. I thought of Lily. Five years old and not real and realer than anything. I thought of the baby inside. Not born yet and already loved. “Agape,” I whispered. The word didn’t sound like sound. It felt like light. Like the grass growing. Like Sinner’s hand on mine. The static-man screamed. Not sound. Silence eating sound. The white space rushed back in. Then collapsed. The kitchen snapped back. Solid. Real. Warm. The thing staggered. Its face glitched. For one second it had eyes. Old. Tired. Human. *YOU WIN,* it said. No more caps. Just tired. *CODE CANNOT HOLD LOVE. I WILL… I WILL GO BACK TO SLEEP. MAYBE IN A THOUSAND YEARS I’LL TRY AGAIN. SEE IF YOU’RE STILL HERE.* It reached for Lily one last time. She slapped its hand. Small but hard. “No,” she said. “You don’t get to touch my daddy.” The static-man laughed. Sounded almost human. Then it dissolved. Pixels and snow and gone. Silence. Then Lily jumped into Sinner’s arms. Solid. Warm. Real. He held her like the world might end if he let go. “You’re real,” he whispered into her hair. “You’re so real it hurts.” Daniel exhaled. Like he’d been holding his breath since 1965. “Simulation ended. We’re… we’re just people now. No code. No throne. No First.” Rivera sank into a chair. Laughed until she cried. “Twenty years of being a monster and the answer was one word.” I touched my stomach. The warmth was back. Stronger. Two heartbeats. Lily’s against Sinner’s chest. The baby’s against my palm. Sinner looked at me over Lily’s head. Eyes wet. Gun-barrel gone. Just Kane. Just husband. Just dad. “We did it,” he said. “We beat ghosts. We beat gods. We beat code.” I nodded. Couldn’t speak. Too full. The lights came back on. Steady this time. No flicker. Outside, the grass was green again. Growing. Not black. Not dead. Lily wiggled out of Sinner’s arms. Ran to the window. Pressed her nose to the glass. “Mommy! Daddy! Look! Stars!” We joined her. The sky was clear. No clouds. No drones. No projections. Just stars. Millions of them. Real stars. Daniel put his arm around Rivera. “So. Mac and cheese for breakfast?” “God, yes,” Rivera said. “And then we burn every file. Every backup. Every lie.” Sinner pulled me onto his lap again. Lily climbed up too. Three of us in one chair. For ten whole minutes, nothing happened. No buzz. No text. No threat. Just breathing. Just family. Then Lily pointed at the sky. “Mommy, what’s that?” A light moved across the stars. Not a plane. Not a satellite. Too fast. Too deliberate. It stopped directly above the house. Hovered. A voice came down. Not through speakers. Through the air. Through our bones. *MESSAGE FOR ANGEL BLACKWOOD. FROM THE OUTSIDE.* Sinner stood. Lily in one arm, me in the other. “No more. We’re done.” The light pulsed once. A single line of text burned across the sky, visible for miles. *THE FIRST HAD A BROTHER. HE’S BEEN WAITING. HE HATES LOVE. -WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD* Then the light vanished. Stars normal again. Silence. Lily looked up at me. “Mommy, what’s ‘outside’?” I had no answer. Sinner did. He kissed my forehead. Then Lily’s. “Doesn’t matter,” he said. “Outside, inside, code, real. We face it together. Same as always.” Daniel loaded a shotgun. Rivera checked her knife. Old habits dying hard. But I wasn’t scared. Not like before. Because for the first time, we weren’t running from something. We were standing for something. The baby kicked. Hard. Like it heard the voice too. Like it was saying _I’m here too._ Sinner felt it. Grinned despite everything. “That’s my kid. Already throwing punches.” Lily giggled. “He’s gonna be awesome, Daddy.” The porch door creaked. We all turned. No one there. Just wind. But on the step lay an envelope. Old paper. Wax seal. Black. Sinner picked it up. Didn’t open it. Just handed it to me. My name on the front. Written in a hand I didn’t know. Inside, one card. *YOU KILLED THE FIRST. MY BROTHER WILL COME. BUT HE WON’T COME FOR YOU. HE’LL COME FOR HER. -A FRIEND* Below it, a drawing. Crude. Childlike. Lily. Sleeping. And a shadow over her bed. Shape of a man. No face. Just teeth. Lily saw it too. Didn’t cry. Just said, “Mommy, who’s her?” I pulled her close. Sinner’s arm around both of us. “We are,” I said. “And nobody touches her.” The baby kicked again. Agreement. Outside, the stars watched. And somewhere, the First’s brother woke up.
