Chapter 5

The interview began, and Anna’s nervousness intensified. Anna began to pace when she saw people coming out of the interview room, some angry while others crying. To her surprise, some girls were not bothered or nervous; they were busy gossiping about the CEO.  "Wow?  I heard that Mr. Wright has a son, but he is single. He is so handsome. "Could he be looking for a mother for his son, using this interview as a means to accomplish that?" "I heard that he might have trouble in bed... Otherwise, how come he has never had a steady girlfriend? Perhaps they despised his inability to... "What if that were true?" I still want to marry him even if he has ED! "After all, he’s so damn rich!" Anna pinched the bridge of her nose to stop herself from yelling at the girls. She was nervous and at the same time trying to rehearse the possible questions she should be expecting, but instead of them doing the same, they were busy talking about the boss. Anna imagined her boss to be a man in his fifties with a protruding stomach, and she couldn’t even fathom why these girls would want to be a mistress to such a man. If all the girls are pining over him, then this man must be a serial flirt. Anna was already discouraged; she didn’t want to deal with a rich jerk anymore. The father of her children was a jerk, and she didn’t want her boss to be one. She made up her mind to concentrate on her work if she was lucky enough to land the job. She walked to the window and stood there, looking at New York City and how beautiful it looked from the Carousel‘s building. She imagined the cacophony of sounds from angry drivers as the result of the heavy traffic down the street. Anna’s heart hammers ruthlessly on her ribcage as another person emerges from the room angry and muttering incoherently as she walks out of the waiting area and heads to the elevator. Anna took a brush from her handbag and brushed her hair, then straightened her dress. She tried to practice the inhale and exhale exercise she often told her daughter to do whenever she was nervous about something. She practiced it a few times before she was finally a little calmer. "Anna, you got this! "Go in and make yourself proud." Anna soliloquy. "Anna Gabriel!" "Coming!"  Anna said, "Blow out a puff," and then walked out of the crowd. She took a deep breath before opening the door. There were five interviewers on the panel. Anna was shocked to see that the man sitting in the middle turned out to be the "gigolo" she met earlier in the elevator. Isn’t that the gigolo? What the hell is he doing here? I pray he shouldn’t be someone with a big role. God, please rescue me. It seems that this man is superior to other interviewers. Is he the manager, the general manager, or... s**t!  Did he hear me call him a gigolo when we were in the elevator? What should I do? Anna panicked. Anna took a shaky step inside the room, greeted the interviewers, and was then asked to take a seat. She sat down, fiddling with her hands nervously. David smirked when he noticed her anxiety. He hasn’t spoken a word since he came to the interview room, apart from shaking his head to show his disapproval when the panel asked if he approved of the candidate. "Did you graduate from the Wharton School?" David asked, taking everyone by surprise. The rest of the panel had perplexed looks etched on their faces when David decided to interview Anna by himself when he had been so quiet since he came to the room wearing an ennui expression. "Not...not really.  "I'm a dropout." Anna stammered. Anna claimed that she had graduated from the Wharton School in her resume so that she could make it to the interview stage. She needed the job. The other interviewers were surprised. "What you are saying is that your resume is fake?" one of the interviewers asked and then apologized to David.  "Mr. Wright,  I’m sorry, our background checks... David gestured for him to keep quiet. He then asked Anna sternly, "Your resume says you have working experience and experience working in Germany." Are you trying to get a job based solely on your experiences working at Hotel Milan in Germany? "Have you seen the job requirements?"   David looked at her as if she were a bag of repulsive things. Anna swallowed hard before answering. "Sir, I saw the job requirement, and I know that I have what it takes to do the job, and without… He tossed her resume, which fell beside Anna. "Get out!"  David yelled and slammed his fist on the table. Anger scorched his face, and his voice thundered, startling everyone in the room. Anna felt upset and immensely embarrassed. She picked up her resume and headed for the door but stopped when she heard David say, "I know you were up to no good, and I am not disappointed." Don’t try your schemes here. "No company would want a liar like you!" Anna stopped and turned to face David. Her fury matched David’s. His arrogance and cocky nature pissed Anna off. Who the f**k does this piece of sh*t think he is? Anna asked herself, and then she walked towards David and slammed her resume on the table. All the interviewers looked at her in surprise. How dare she do that in front of Mr. Wright? Is she looking for death? The interviewers shook their heads in surprise. David was nonplussed because of her action and the way she held her head, restively looking at him. "What do you want?" David asked, looking disdainfully at Anna. "I didn’t entirely fake my resume." I did attend Wharton, but I dropped out of school because of some personal matters. And I don’t think you should judge my ability simply by my degree. You believe that only a degree can prove a person’s worth and abilities. "Well, I did like to prove you very wrong!" Anna c****d her head restively at David. "Let’s have a bet." Anna shook her head and smiled mischievously at him. She knew that people like David never shy away from a challenge because they are obsessed with winning. "What do you think?" Anna pried and prayed that David would take the bait. David maintained a calm, peaceful, and tranquil demeanor. The panels were quietly observing the situation. They had stupefied expressions on their faces. No one has ever challenged David before. Karl Xavier was David’s best friend and a member of the panel, and in his entire life of working with David, nobody had grown the balls to challenge David. He was impressed that someone was ready to challenge David, and he was ready to cajole David into accepting the challenge if he refused to accept it. However, Karl was ready to bet his entire savings that David was going to accept the challenge. "Now this boring interview just got interesting." "I almost dozed off." David shot Karl a glare, but he shrugged and smirked at David, pointing him towards Anna, who was waiting for his answer. Karl knew that David was still contemplating whether he should accept it or not, and Karl wasn’t ready to see David back out. "David, we take it that you are chickening out of the bet, which is a first, and that doesn’t look like you." "I am glad there is something that you are afraid of." David shot Karl another glare. He knew what Karl was trying to do; it was a method that David was well conversant with. "Well, I take it that you are scared of losing." "I would wish you a good life, but..." "Girl, what do you want to bet?" Karl asked curiously. David glared at Karl. Anna took a deep breath, looked directly at David, and said, "I’ll work at a hotel under the Carousel Group for three months, and I guarantee a monthly profit of at least thirty percent." If I achieve this, then I want you to give me a permanent position. Moreover, my salary has to be tripled, and I want... She paused and then emphasized the words, "An apology!" Others gasped, while Karl smirked with glistening admiration at Anna. The rest of the panelists were surprised because, her resume, said that she had only worked at Hotel Milan for a year and had only created a profit margin of about 10 percent. They wondered what made her dare to guarantee a profit margin of thirty percent. They found it preposterous. David pushed the resume aside, crossed his arms, and asked, "What if you fail to do it?" Anna smiled radiantly and said, "Then I’ll work for the Carousel Group for free for three years." I’ll do anything you say. "Do you accept this bet?" "Accept it!  Accept it!"  Karl instigated, "Wayne, don’t chicken out!" David glared at Karl, and he smiled saccharinely at him. "Go back and wait for further instructions," David said and stood up from his seat, heading to the door. He paused beside Anna. He noticed her delicate features and her alluring fragrance, which started to arouse him. He studied her for a while. He was intrigued by her. At least you’re more interesting than the women who tried to throw themselves at me at all costs. David thought. Anna stared back at him squarely; she didn’t allow his height to intimidate him. Very few people were able to hold his guess, but Anna looked very dedicated, and he could tell that she was very stubborn and strong-willed, something that was also fascinating about her. "Anna Gabriel, I accept this bet." With that, Wayne then walked away briskly. Karl ran after Wayne and winked at Anna and said, "Girl, you’re something." "I hope that you win this bet!"   It was already lunchtime when Anna went home. She went to Olive’s kindergarten to pick her up before going home. "Mommy, you’re finally back!" Olive hugged Anna and said, "I made some new friends at school and played some interesting games!" "Wow!  That is awesome, sweetie. "So I take it that you love your new school?" "Yes, mummy, I love my new school and my teacher. They all said that I was beautiful! "Of course, you are beautiful, my sunshine." Anna kissed her cheek and took her home. At home, Anna cooked while Olive sat on a stool looking at what she was doing. She stole glances at her beautiful daughter; she was so happy that she didn’t hand over her daughter to that jerk. Back then, Anna was afraid that the man would find out about Olive’s existence. Thus, Anna quickly snuck out of the country with her daughter, not long after she was born. She even broke her ties with her family to protect Olive. It was very tough for Anna to raise a child on her own while she was living overseas. But all her hardships were worth it when she saw Olive smile. Olive was very intelligent and could converse very well. At four years old, she could dress and brush her teeth. She helped Anna do some housework and even took care of herself. After Anna finished cooking, they had a hearty meal.
