Chapter 31. Ash

Kayla wasn’t at her desk this morning, and she’s the last person to walk into the conference room for our weekly meeting. She refuses to look at me, and takes a seat as far from me as she can. It doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the team, either. Everyone shifts uncomfortably, and there is no small talk or jokes. She’s wearing more make-up than I’ve ever seen her wear, but it doesn’t disguise the puffy bruises under her eyes, or the fact that she looks like she might fall over at any second. My guilt ramps up. Bill walks in and his eyes instantly flick between Kayla and I as though he can see the tension between us. Normally, he would ask Kayla to take notes, but his eyes land on the blank desk in front of her, and I realize she doesn’t even have her ever present notebook today. Bil
