Kael's eyes followed me like a predator tracking its prey.
I felt his gaze burning into my back as I walked across the marble courtyard of the Wolf King's Academy. Every step I took in my designer heels echoed against the ancient stone, drawing whispers from the students who lined the pathways.
*"Who is she?"*
*"I've never seen her before."*
*"Did you see how Alpha Kael looked at her?"*
I kept my chin high, my expression cold and unreadable. Two years of training with Marcus had taught me how to wear a mask of ice. Inside, however, my heart was racing.
*He doesn't recognize me.*
Of course he didn't. The Elara he knew was a trembling Omega with matted hair and torn clothes. The woman walking through these halls was Elena Hart—a wealthy heiress with expensive taste and an aura of power that made Alphas step aside.
But the mate-bond between us... it was still there.
Faint. Broken. But present.
I could feel Kael's confusion radiating from him like heat. He knew something was wrong. He felt the pull toward me, the same pull he had tried to sever with his rejection.
*Good. Let him suffer.*
I entered the main hall, where the academy's orientation was about to begin. The building was breathtaking—soaring ceilings, stained glass windows depicting ancient werewolf battles, and chandeliers made of enchanted crystal that glowed with silver light.
Students filled the rows of seats, their chatter echoing off the walls. I found a seat near the back, away from the crowd. I wanted to observe before I was observed.
A girl with bright red hair plopped down beside me, grinning like we were old friends.
"Hi! I'm Lily. You're the new girl, right? Everyone's talking about you."
I blinked, caught off guard by her friendliness. "Everyone?"
Lily nodded enthusiastically. "You made Alpha Kael freeze like a statue. That's never happened before. He's usually so... cold and untouchable. But when he saw you, he looked like he'd seen a ghost."
*He had seen a ghost. The ghost of the girl he murdered.*
"Interesting," I said smoothly, offering a polite smile. "I'm Elena Hart. Nice to meet you."
"Elena Hart," Lily repeated, testing the name on her tongue. "That sounds rich. Are you from one of the royal families?"
"Something like that," I murmured.
Before Lily could pry further, the lights dimmed. A tall, imposing figure stepped onto the stage at the front of the hall.
Headmaster Aldric—an ancient Lycan with silver fur streaking through his gray hair—raised his hands for silence.
"Welcome, students, to the Wolf King's Academy," he boomed. "You are the future leaders of our kind. Here, you will learn combat, strategy, politics, and the ancient laws that bind our packs together."
His eyes swept across the room, lingering on the front row where the most powerful Alphas sat.
"But first, I have a special announcement. This year, we are honored to host a guest of unparalleled importance."
The doors at the back of the hall swung open.
Every head turned.
And then I saw him.
**Damon Blackwood.**
The Alpha King.
He walked through the doors like he owned the very air we breathed. He was impossibly tall, with jet-black hair that fell across his forehead and eyes the color of molten gold. His jaw was sharp, his shoulders broad, and his presence radiated raw, untamed power.
He wore a simple black suit, but it did nothing to hide the deadly grace in his movements. This was not a man you challenged. This was a man you bowed to.
And when his golden eyes swept across the room...
They locked onto me.
Time stopped.
The world around me faded—the whispers, the lights, the students. All I could see were those golden eyes, burning into mine like they had found something precious.
Something that belonged to him.
My heart slammed against my ribs. My wolf stirred inside me, awakening from the slumber she had been in since the training cabin.
And then I heard it.
A voice—low, deep, resonating in my very soul.
*"Mate."*
I gasped, clutching the armrest of my seat. The word echoed in my skull, ancient and undeniable.
Marcus had warned me about this. He had told me that when I met the Alpha King, the mate-bond would snap into place.
But I wasn't ready.
*I wasn't ready.*
Damon's expression didn't change. His face remained cold and unreadable. But I saw his pupils dilate. I saw his jaw tighten. I saw his fingers curl into fists at his sides.
He knew.
He knew I was his fated mate.
And he was just as shaken as I was.
Headmaster Aldric continued speaking, unaware of the earthquake that had just occurred between us. "Alpha King Damon has graciously agreed to oversee the academy's annual Combat Tournament. He will be selecting the strongest warriors to join his royal guard. So I urge you all to give your best."
Damon walked down the center aisle, heading straight toward the front row. But as he passed my seat, he paused.
Just for a second.
His golden eyes flickered to me, and I caught the faintest hint of a smirk on his lips.
Then he continued walking, leaving me breathless and trembling.
Lily leaned over, her eyes wide. "Oh my Goddess. Did the Alpha King just look at YOU?!"
I forced myself to breathe. "It was nothing. Probably just checking out the new student."
Lily snorted. "The Alpha King doesn't 'check out' anyone. He's never shown interest in a single wolf. They say he's been searching for his fated mate for years. They say he won't rest until he finds her."
*He just did.*
But I couldn't let anyone know. Not yet. My cover as Elena Hart was too important.
After the orientation, students spilled out into the courtyard. The academy was buzzing with excitement about the Combat Tournament. Groups of Alphas and Betas were already forming alliances, strategizing how to impress the Alpha King.
I walked toward the garden, needing a moment to clear my head.
*Damon Blackwood. My true mate.*
*What am I going to do?*
I wasn't ready for this. My mission was revenge on Kael and Selene. I hadn't planned on finding my fated mate in the middle of it.
But then I remembered Marcus's words: *"Stay close to Damon Blackwood. He is your true mate. Together, you will destroy the Shadow cult."*
*Perhaps the Moon Goddess has a plan after all.*
I was so lost in thought that I didn't hear the footsteps behind me.
"Elena Hart."
A cold, familiar voice. I turned slowly.
Kael Stone stood a few feet away, his dark eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl. His jaw was tight, his hands clenched at his sides.
"Alpha Kael," I said, my voice dripping with false sweetness. "Can I help you?"
"I want to know who you are," he demanded. "Your scent... it's familiar. It reminds me of someone."
*Of course it does. I was your mate.*
I tilted my head, smiling innocently. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean. I've never met you before in my life."
"You're lying." He stepped closer, his towering frame blocking the sunlight. "I've been a ruler long enough to know when someone is hiding something. What are you hiding, Elena?"
I held my ground. Two years ago, I would have cowered before him. Now, I met his gaze with unflinching steel.
"My past is none of your business, Alpha. I'm here to study, not to entertain your paranoia."
Something flickered in his eyes. Regret? Pain? I couldn't tell.
"The woman you remind me of," he said quietly, "was someone I hurt deeply. She was... she was my mate. But I rejected her."
My heart twisted, but I kept my face neutral.
"You rejected your fated mate?" I asked, my voice cold. "That's unforgivable."
Kael winced, looking away. "I know. I was stupid. I was manipulated. And I've regretted it every single day since."
*Good. Suffer.*
"Why are you telling me this?" I asked. "We just met."
He looked at me again, and I saw something raw in his eyes. "I don't know. There's just something about you. Something that draws me in."
*That's the broken mate-bond, you fool.*
"I don't have time for this," I said, turning to leave.
Kael grabbed my wrist.
The moment his skin touched mine, I felt the broken bond pulse with pain. I jerked my arm away, my wolf snarling inside me.
"Don't touch me," I hissed.
Kael looked stunned. "I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me."
"Stay away from me, Alpha." My voice was ice. "I am not your mate. I am not your toy. And I am not someone you can manipulate."
Before he could respond, another voice cut through the air.
"Did I hear you say you rejected your fated mate?"
Damon Blackwood emerged from the shadows of the garden, his golden eyes blazing with cold fury. He walked toward Kael like a king approaching a peasant.
Kael stiffened, immediately dropping into a formal bow. "Alpha King. I didn't see you there."
Damon ignored him. His eyes were locked on me. "Are you alright, Miss Hart?"
I nodded, keeping my composure. "I'm fine. Just having a... conversation with Alpha Kael."
Damon's gaze shifted to Kael. "Leave."
Kael's face reddened. "But I was just—"
"I said leave," Damon repeated, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. "If I ever see you cornering Miss Hart again, I will personally remove you from this academy. Do I make myself clear?"
Kael swallowed hard. "Yes, Alpha King."
He shot me one last look—confused, frustrated, desperate—and then walked away.
Damon and I were alone.
We stood in the garden, the silence stretching between us like a taut string. His golden eyes studied me with an intensity that made my skin tingle.
"You knew I was coming," he said softly. "Your reaction... you were expecting the mate-bond."
I bit my lip. "My guardian told me about you. He said you've been searching for the True Luna."
Damon took a step closer. "And you are her. I've felt you in my soul for years, Elara. I've searched every corner of this world for you. And now, finally... you're here."
Hearing my real name on his lips sent a shiver down my spine. "How do you know that name?"
He smiled—a small, secret smile. "I know everything about you, Elara Moonblood. I know your mother died protecting you. I know Marcus trained you. And I know you've returned to take revenge on the Alpha who rejected you."
I stared at him, stunned. "How?"
"I'm the Alpha King," he said simply. "I know all who enter my kingdom. And I've been waiting for you for a very long time."
He reached out, gently touching my cheek. The bond between us burned with warmth.
"I won't push you," he said quietly. "I know you have a mission. But know this, Elara—when you're ready, I will be here. I will help you destroy everyone who wronged you. And I will never, ever reject you."
His words hit me like a tidal wave.
"Until then," he said, stepping back, "take care of yourself. And if Kael bothers you again... call my name. I will come."
He disappeared into the shadows, leaving me alone with a racing heart and a whirlwind of emotions.
