CHAPTER ONE: THE BETRAYAL
The first thing Charlotte Gomez saw was a red lace bra hanging from Ethan's bedside lamp. She stopped at the bedroom door. For several seconds, she simply stared at it. It wasn't hers. Charlotte knew every piece of lingerie in her wardrobe. She knew every shirt Ethan owned, every pair of shoes beneath his bed, every little detail of the room she had spent five years helping him turn into a home. That bra didn't belong there. Her fingers tightened around the door handle. "Ethan?" Silence. Then she heard it. A muffled laugh. Charlotte's heart lurched. She pushed the door open. And the world she knew came crashing down. Ethan was in bed. With Vanessa. Her younger sister. The sheets were tangled around their bodies, and for one terrible second, Charlotte couldn't process what she was seeing. Ethan's eyes met hers. His face drained of color. "Charlotte..." She couldn't move. She couldn't breathe. Her gaze shifted to Vanessa. Her sister was staring back at her, frozen beneath the sheets. Then Charlotte looked at Ethan again. Her fiancé. The man she had loved for five years. The man she was supposed to marry. The man she had defended countless times whenever anyone questioned their relationship. "Tell me I'm dreaming," Charlotte whispered. Ethan climbed out of bed. "Charlotte, please. Let me explain." She took a step backward. "Explain what?" "It's not what you think." A broken laugh escaped her. "You're in bed with my sister, Ethan. What exactly am I supposed to think?" He opened his mouth. Nothing came out. That silence hurt more than any excuse could have. Charlotte's eyes filled with tears. "How long?" "Charlotte—" "How long?" Ethan looked away. Vanessa shifted beneath the sheets. Charlotte's chest tightened. She already knew. But she needed to hear it. She needed to know exactly how long she had been living a lie. "How long?" she asked again. Vanessa answered. "Six months." Charlotte stared at her. Six months. The words echoed inside her head. Six months of lies. Six months of stolen moments. Six months of Vanessa smiling at her while secretly sleeping with the man Charlotte loved. "You've got to be kidding me." "I'm sorry," Ethan said. Charlotte looked at him. "Sorry?" "I didn't mean for this to happen." "Six months isn't something that just happens." He stepped toward her. She immediately stepped back. "Don't." "Charlotte, I love you." The words made her laugh again. This time, tears rolled down her cheeks. "You love me?" "Yes." "Then why were you sleeping with her?" Ethan had no answer. Charlotte turned to Vanessa. She had expected shame. Regret. Anything. Instead, Vanessa looked almost annoyed. "Maybe you should stop acting like you're the only victim here." Charlotte stared at her. "What did you just say?" Vanessa sat up and pulled the sheet around herself. "You heard me." "Vanessa..." "Maybe if you actually paid attention to Ethan instead of always being busy with your perfect little life, things wouldn't have happened this way." Something inside Charlotte cracked. "You had an affair with my fiancé, and you're blaming me?" "I'm not blaming you." Vanessa shrugged. "I'm saying you should ask yourself why he wanted someone else." Ethan's expression hardened. "Vanessa, that's enough." But Charlotte barely heard him. She looked at the two people standing before her. The two people she had trusted more than anyone. Suddenly, they were strangers. She wiped her tears. "Congratulations." Ethan frowned. "For what?" "For destroying everything." She turned around. "Charlotte!" She walked out. "Charlotte, wait!" She didn't. She made it down the stairs before Ethan caught up with her. He grabbed her wrist. She yanked her hand free. "Don't touch me." "Please, just listen." "I've listened enough." "I made a mistake." Charlotte stared at him. "No, Ethan. You made a choice." He looked at her helplessly. "I can fix this." She shook her head. "You can't fix five years by saying sorry." "Charlotte, we can work through this." She looked at him for a long moment. "Could you forgive me if I did this to you?" He said nothing. "Exactly." She opened the front door. Rain was pouring outside. She stepped into it. "Charlotte!" She heard Ethan calling her name behind her. She kept walking. She didn't know where she was going. She didn't know what she was going to do. All she knew was that she couldn't stay there another second. The rain soaked her clothes within minutes, but she barely noticed. Her heart hurt too much. Five years. Five years of love. Five years of promises. Five years of believing Ethan was her future. And now she was walking away from him with nothing but a shattered heart. She didn't know it yet, but this was only the beginning. Because before the night ended, Charlotte Gomez would make a decision that would change her life forever. --- NOIR Noir was the kind of nightclub where people went to forget who they were. Tonight, Charlotte fit right in. Music thundered through the walls as colored lights swept across the crowded dance floor. Bodies moved beneath the flashing lights, laughter mixed with music, and expensive perfume hung thick in the air. Charlotte sat at the bar with a glass of tequila in front of her. "Another," she said. The bartender glanced at her nearly empty glass. "You've had quite a few." "I said another." He hesitated before pouring. Charlotte swallowed it in one gulp. The alcohol burned her throat. Good. She wanted something to burn. Anything that could drown out the image of Ethan and Vanessa in that bed. She ordered another drink. Then another. Eventually, she left the bar and stepped onto the dance floor. She let the music take over. She danced until her legs hurt. She danced until her hair stuck to her face. She danced until she could almost pretend Ethan's name didn't exist. Almost. Then she saw him. A man stood alone on the balcony overlooking the club. He wasn't dancing. He wasn't drinking. He wasn't talking to anyone. He simply stood there, watching the room with the quiet confidence of someone who knew he belonged wherever he was. Charlotte's gaze lingered. Tall. Dark-haired. Impossibly composed. There was something intimidating about him. As though nothing in the room could surprise him. Then his eyes found hers. Charlotte froze. His gaze didn't move. Neither did hers. For one strange moment, the noise around them seemed to disappear. Then Charlotte looked away. She shouldn't have been staring. She knew that. But tonight, she wasn't interested in doing what she should. She wanted to forget. She wanted one reckless night. One night where she wasn't Ethan's betrayed fiancée. One night where she didn't have to be anyone's good daughter or perfect sister. She looked back at the stranger. He was still watching her. Charlotte finished her drink. Then she headed toward the VIP balcony. As she approached him, his eyes briefly swept over her. "Can I help you?" His voice was calm, almost unnervingly so. Charlotte stopped in front of him. "I want you for the night." One eyebrow lifted. He studied her for a moment. Then his gaze dropped to the glass in her hand. "You're drunk." "So?" "So you might regret this tomorrow." Charlotte stepped closer. "I already regret something." His expression changed slightly. "What?" "Trusting the wrong man." For the first time, the stranger said nothing. Charlotte swallowed. "I don't want your name." His eyes narrowed slightly. "I don't want to know who you are." She took another step toward him. "I just want tonight." He studied her face. "And if I say no?" "Then I'll find someone else." Something tightened in his jaw. "You're serious." "Completely." The stranger's gaze remained fixed on hers. "You really have no idea who you're talking to." Charlotte held his gaze. "Does it matter?" A slow smile touched his lips. "Perhaps not." He reached for the glass in her hand and gently took it from her. Then he set it on the nearby table. "You've had enough." Charlotte frowned. "I'm not asking you to take care of me." "No," he said quietly. "You're asking me to help you forget." She went still. He had understood far more than she had intended to reveal. "Maybe I am." His eyes dropped briefly to her lips before returning to hers. "And what exactly are you trying to forget?" "Ethan." The name came out like a bitter taste. The stranger's expression became unreadable. Charlotte looked away. "I don't want to talk about him." "Then we won't." She looked back at him. For the first time that night, something inside her eased. He held out his hand. "Come with me." Charlotte stared at it. She knew she should walk away. She knew nothing about him. She didn't know his name, his background, or what kind of man he was. But tonight, she didn't care. She placed her hand in his. His fingers closed around hers. And as he led her away from the balcony, Charlotte had no idea that she was walking straight toward the biggest turning point of her life. She didn't know his name. She didn't know his secrets. She didn't know that years from now, she would look back on this night and realize it had changed everything. Tonight, she only knew one thing. She wanted to forget Ethan. And the mysterious stranger beside her was about to become the man she could never forget.
