Where the Tide Kept Promises

The Almost Confession

The following Saturday, the library welcomed more visitors than usual. Families wandered through the newly restored reading room, children laughed as they searched for adventure books, and elderly neighbors admired the changes while sharing stories from years gone by.

Sofia watched everything with quiet satisfaction.

"It feels alive again," she said.

Adrian stood beside her, smiling as he looked around the room.

"That's because of you."

She shook her head.

"It was everyone's effort."

"Maybe," he replied. "But you're the heart of this place."

His words lingered in her mind long after they returned to work.

Later that afternoon, a little boy approached the front desk holding a storybook.

"Mister Adrian," he asked innocently, "is Miss Sofia your girlfriend?"

Sofia nearly dropped the book in her hands.

Adrian blinked before letting out an awkward laugh.

"No," he answered.

The little boy frowned.

"You should ask her. You smile more when she's here."

Before either of them could respond, the boy ran back to his mother, leaving the two of them standing in embarrassed silence.

Sofia couldn't stop herself from laughing.

"I think children are more honest than adults."

"They definitely are," Adrian replied, rubbing the back of his neck.

As evening approached, they locked the library together and stepped outside.

The streets were quiet, and the sea breeze carried the scent of salt and blooming flowers.

"I'll walk you home," Adrian offered.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

They walked side by side beneath the glowing streetlights, talking about their favorite books, childhood memories, and dreams they had almost forgotten.

When they reached Sofia's house, neither of them was in a hurry to say goodbye.

"Thank you for today," Sofia said softly.

Adrian smiled.

"I should be thanking you."

For a brief moment, it felt as though he wanted to say something more.

Instead, he simply wished her goodnight.

As Sofia watched him disappear down the quiet street, she touched her racing heart and smiled to herself.

She didn't know it yet, but Adrian had come very close to telling her how he truly felt.
