Where the Tide Kept Promises

The first smile

The library became busier as the week went on. Children stopped by after school to borrow books, while elderly neighbors gathered in the reading corner to chat over newspapers and warm tea. Adrian continued visiting every morning, carefully inspecting different parts of the building before the renovation officially began.

Sofia noticed something about him that she hadn't expected.

He never treated anyone as unimportant.

He greeted every visitor with a smile, helped an elderly man carry a box of donated books, and even knelt beside a little girl to help her choose a storybook after she shyly admitted she was learning to read.

"You seem good with children," Sofia said as they watched the girl leave with a bright smile.

Adrian chuckled.

"My mother was a teacher. She always believed every child deserved patience."

Sofia smiled.

"I think she raised you well."

For a moment, Adrian looked down, his smile fading.

"I hope she'd still say that if she were here."

Sofia sensed the sadness in his voice but chose not to ask. Some wounds needed time before they could be shared.

That afternoon, they worked together in the library's storage room, sorting through old photographs, newspaper clippings, and handwritten records from decades ago.

Suddenly, an old picture slipped from a dusty box.

It showed the library on its opening day more than fifty years earlier. Families stood proudly in front of the building, smiling for the camera.

"It's beautiful," Adrian whispered.

Sofia carefully brushed the dust from the photo.

"This library has always brought people together."

Adrian looked at her instead of the photograph.

"Maybe it still does."

Their eyes met for a brief moment before Sofia looked away, feeling her cheeks grow warm.

She smiled to herself as she returned the picture to its box.

For the first time in years, the library wasn't just filled with stories from the past.

It was quietly becoming the beginning of a new one.
