The weekend arrived with clear skies and a gentle sea breeze. The town gathered along the waterfront for the annual Bayview Lantern Festival, filling the streets with music, food, and laughter.
Sofia almost decided not to go. Crowded places had never been her favorite, but Adrian had convinced her with a simple promise.
"You deserve one evening without worrying about work."
When she arrived, Adrian was already waiting near the entrance. He wore a light blue shirt that matched the color of the sea, and when he saw her, he couldn't hide his smile.
"You look beautiful," he said quietly.
Sofia felt her cheeks warm.
"Thank you."
They wandered through the festival together, trying local food, playing small carnival games, and laughing over Adrian's failed attempt to win a stuffed dolphin. On his third try, he finally succeeded.
"This is for you," he said, handing her the prize.
Sofia hugged the little dolphin and smiled.
"I'll keep it forever."
As night fell, hundreds of lanterns floated into the sky, their soft light reflecting across the water. The crowd grew silent, watching the glowing lanterns drift higher and higher.
"They're beautiful," Sofia whispered.
Adrian looked at her instead of the sky.
"I don't think I've ever seen anything more beautiful."
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the rest of the world seemed to disappear.
Adrian slowly reached for her hand.
She didn't pull away.
Their fingers intertwined naturally, as if they had always belonged together.
Neither of them spoke. They simply stood side by side, watching the lanterns rise into the night, both wondering if this was the beginning of something neither had expected but both secretly hoped for.
