The Morning After

404 Words
The next morning, Sofia woke up before her alarm. For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling, trying to remember why she felt so strangely happy. Then she remembered. The lanterns. The sea. Adrian holding her hand. And the words they had finally admitted. A smile slowly appeared on her face. She reached for her phone. There was already a message waiting. Adrian: Good morning. Did you sleep well? Sofia stared at the message, her heart fluttering. She typed a reply, deleted it, typed another one, and finally sent: Sofia: Yes. You? His reply came almost immediately. Adrian: Better than usual. She smiled. Sofia: Why? There was a short pause. Then: Adrian: Because I finally told you how I feel. Sofia pressed her phone against her chest. She had spent so long protecting her heart that she had forgotten how wonderful it felt to let someone in. Later that morning, Sofia met Adrian at their usual café. When she walked through the door, she saw him sitting by the window. He stood immediately. “You came.” She laughed. “Of course I came.” For a moment, they simply looked at each other. Everything felt different. They were still Sofia and Adrian. Still friends. Still themselves. But something had changed. Something beautiful. Adrian pulled out the chair for her. “So,” he said, smiling, “are we going to pretend nothing happened last night?” Sofia raised an eyebrow. “Do you want to?” “Absolutely not.” She laughed. Neither did she. They spent the morning talking, laughing, and learning what it felt like to take their first steps toward something more. But happiness can sometimes make people forget that the past still exists. And Sofia's past was about to return. Just as they were leaving the café, a familiar voice called her name. “Sofia?” She froze. The smile disappeared from her face. Adrian noticed immediately. He turned toward the voice. Standing across the street was someone Sofia had hoped she would never see again. Someone from the part of her life she had tried so hard to leave behind. Adrian looked at her. “Who is that?” Sofia couldn't answer. Her hands began to tremble. The stranger slowly walked toward them. And suddenly, the happiness Sofia had found the night before felt dangerously fragile. Because some chapters of the past refuse to stay closed.
