The Secret From the Past

619 Words
Sofia read the letter again. Then again. But the words remained the same. Your mother knew the truth all along. Her hands trembled. “What truth?” Adrian asked gently. Sofia shook her head. “I don't know.” She folded the letter and placed it back inside the envelope. “I need to go home.” Adrian stood. “I'll come with you.” Sofia looked at him. “You don't have to.” “I know.” He gave her a small smile. “But I want to.” They walked home together in silence. When Sofia opened the door, she found her mother sitting at the kitchen table. The moment her mother saw the envelope in Sofia's hand, her face changed. She knew. Sofia stopped. “You know what this is.” Her mother slowly stood. “Sofia…” “Don't.” Her voice shook. “Please don't lie to me.” Her mother looked down. For years, Sofia had believed her mother had protected her. Now she wasn't sure. “Who is Daniel?” Sofia asked. Her mother closed her eyes. “He was your father's closest friend.” Sofia froze. “My father?” Adrian stood quietly behind her. Sofia's father had died when she was young. She remembered very little about him. “What does he have to do with the letter?” Her mother sat down. “There was an accident many years ago.” Sofia listened. “Your father wasn't responsible for it,” her mother continued. “But someone blamed him.” “Who?” “Daniel's family.” Sofia's heart tightened. “Why?” “Because they believed your father had caused the accident.” Sofia stared at her mother. “And Daniel?” “He eventually discovered that your father wasn't responsible.” Sofia looked at the letter. “Then why did nobody tell me?” Her mother looked at her with tears in her eyes. “Because I was afraid.” “Afraid of what?” “That the truth would destroy you.” Sofia's voice became louder. “You didn't have the right to decide that for me!” Her mother began crying. “I thought I was protecting you.” “You were protecting yourself!” The room became silent. Sofia immediately regretted her words, but the anger inside her was too deep. She turned toward the door. Adrian gently touched her arm. “Sofia.” She looked at him. “I need some air.” He nodded. They walked outside. For several minutes, Sofia said nothing. Then she finally whispered, “My whole life feels like a lie.” Adrian looked at her. “Not everything is a lie.” “How do you know?” “Because I know what I feel.” She looked at him. He took her hand. “What happened before I met you doesn't change who you are now.” Sofia's eyes filled with tears. “But what if the truth changes everything?” “Then we'll face it one step at a time.” She stared at him. “Why are you still here?” Adrian smiled. “Because I told you I would be.” Sofia leaned against his shoulder. For the first time that day, she allowed herself to cry. She didn't know what the future held. She didn't know what else the letter would reveal. But she knew one thing. She wasn't facing it alone. And somewhere in the distance, Daniel was holding another secret—one that Sofia hadn't discovered yet. A secret that would soon force her to choose between the life she knew… and the truth she had been searching for.
