The stranger stepped inside and quietly closed the door behind him. He took a slow look around the library, his gaze lingering on the tall bookshelves, the worn wooden floor, and the sunlight spilling through the old windows.
"This place is beautiful," he said with a smile. "It has so much character."
Sofia wasn't expecting that answer. Most people only noticed how old the building was.
"Thank you," she replied. "Many people think it's falling apart."
"It needs repairs," he admitted, "but it doesn't need to lose its soul."
His words caught her off guard.
The stranger walked toward the front desk and extended his hand.
"I'm Adrian Cruz."
Sofia shook his hand.
"Sofia Reyes."
"It's nice to meet you, Ms. Reyes."
"You can call me Sofia."
"Then you can call me Adrian."
They both smiled, and the awkwardness between them slowly faded.
Adrian placed the rolled blueprints on the table.
"The town council hired me to restore this library," he explained. "Before we begin, I want to understand what makes this place special to the people who use it."
Sofia looked at the faded walls surrounding them.
"This library isn't just a building," she said softly. "Children come here after school to read. Elderly people spend their afternoons sharing stories. Some families have visited this place for generations."
Adrian listened without interrupting.
"I don't want to replace those memories," he said. "I want to protect them."
For the first time since hearing about the renovation, Sofia felt relieved.
Maybe this project wasn't about changing the library.
Maybe it was about giving it a new beginning.
"Would you like me to show you around?" she asked.
"I'd appreciate that."
They walked side by side through every corner of the library. Sofia pointed out the leaking roof, the cracked windows, and the shelves that had begun to weaken with age. Adrian carefully wrote notes while asking thoughtful questions, making sure he understood every detail.
As they reached the children's reading corner, Sofia noticed herself smiling without realizing it.
Somehow, talking to Adrian felt easy.
And without either of them knowing it, this was only the beginning of a story neither heart was ready to forget.
