Chapter 1: A choice I never expected
The hospital smelled like medicine and worry.
Naomi sat quietly on a hard plastic chair in the hallway, staring at the paper in her hands. The numbers on it didn’t make sense to her, no matter how many times she read them.
$50,000.
Her fingers tightened around the bill.
Her father was lying in a hospital room down the hall, unconscious and weak. The doctor had already told her the truth.
“If we don’t do the surgery soon… it might be too late.”
Naomi swallowed hard, trying to hold back tears. She had always believed that if she worked hard enough, life would somehow get better. But right now, she felt completely helpless.
She only worked as a waitress. Even if she worked every day for years, she still wouldn’t be able to afford that amount.
A tear slipped down her cheek before she quickly wiped it away.
“Miss?”
A calm, deep voice spoke beside her.
Naomi looked up.
Standing in front of her was a man she had only seen on television and in magazines. He was tall, dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit, and his expression was serious but strangely calm.
She recognized him immediately.
Alexander King.
One of the richest and most powerful men in the city.
People often said he was cold, distant, and impossible to approach.
Yet here he was, standing in front of her.
His eyes briefly glanced at the paper in her hands.
“That’s a heavy bill to carry alone,” he said quietly.
Naomi felt embarrassed and tried to fold the paper quickly.
“It’s nothing… I’ll figure it out,” she replied softly.
Alexander studied her for a moment, as if thinking about something.
Then he spoke again.
“I can help you.”
Naomi blinked in surprise.
“What do you mean?”
“I can pay for your father’s surgery.”
For a moment, Naomi thought she had heard him wrong.
No stranger would offer something like that. Especially someone like him.
“Why would you do that?” she asked carefully.
Alexander looked directly at her, his expression unreadable.
“Because I need something in return.”
Naomi’s heart skipped a beat.
“What kind of thing?”
His answer came calmly, as if it were the most normal request in the world.
“Marriage.”
Naomi stared at him, speechless.
“A contract marriage,” he continued. “One year. No love, no complications.”
The hallway suddenly felt very quiet.
Alexander’s voice remained steady.
“I help your father live… and you help me solve a problem.”
Naomi’s mind spun with confusion and fear.
Marriage to a stranger? A billionaire she didn’t even know?
It sounded unbelievable.
But when she thought about her father lying helpless in that hospital bed… the choice suddenly didn’t feel so simple anymore.
For the first time in her life, Naomi realized something painful.
Sometimes survival forces you to make decisions you never imagined.
And she had a feeling that saying yes to Alexander King might change her life forever.
