Chapter 5: A Humiliating Dinner

440 Words
The dining table was silent except for the soft clinking of silverware. Naomi sat stiffly in her chair, feeling the heavy tension in the room. Across from her, Sophia watched her with clear dislike. Alexander’s mother sat at the head of the table, observing everything with cold eyes. Finally, Sophia broke the silence. “So Naomi,” she said sweetly, though her tone carried a sharp edge. “What exactly do you do?” Naomi hesitated for a moment before answering honestly. “I used to work as a waitress.” Sophia laughed softly. “A waitress?” She looked toward Alexander’s mother. “Did you hear that? Alexander married a waitress.” Alexander’s mother placed her fork down slowly. “This is quite surprising,” she said calmly. “Our family usually associates with people of a… higher status.” Naomi felt her cheeks grow warm, but she kept her voice steady. “I understand.” Sophia leaned back in her chair with a smug smile. “Alexander, you always had excellent taste. I never imagined you would marry someone so… ordinary.” Before Naomi could respond, Alexander suddenly spoke. “That’s enough.” His voice was calm, but there was a warning hidden in it. Sophia raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Are you defending her now?” Alexander placed his fork down and looked directly at Sophia. “She is my wife.” The words filled the room with silence. Naomi felt slightly shocked. Alexander had never shown any warmth toward her before, yet now he was clearly defending her. Sophia’s expression darkened. “She’s only your wife on paper,” Sophia replied coldly. Alexander’s eyes became sharper. “That is still more than you ever were.” Sophia’s face immediately changed. The insult was clear. Even Alexander’s mother looked slightly surprised. Naomi quietly watched the exchange, unsure what to say. For a moment, she realized something unexpected. Behind Alexander’s cold personality, there was someone who refused to let others humiliate his wife—even if their marriage was only a contract. Sophia suddenly stood up from the table angrily. “This is ridiculous,” she snapped. She looked directly at Naomi. “You may have married him… but don’t get comfortable.” Her voice became colder. “Because people like you never stay in this world for long.” After saying that, Sophia stormed out of the dining room. The room became silent again. Alexander calmly returned to his meal as if nothing had happened. Naomi stared at him in confusion. Maybe living with the cold billionaire was going to be far more complicated than she imagined.
