Clashing Bells

The bustling streets of Mumbai shimmered with fairy lights, vibrant decorations, and the occasional jingle of Christmas carols floating in the air. Naina hummed to herself, her hands busy untangling a string of lights meant for her office Christmas party. Across the table, Karan sat, scowling at the paperwork in front of him. “I don’t understand why this office has to look like Santa’s workshop,” Karan muttered, glaring at the heap of glittery ornaments Naina had brought in. “Because it’s Christmas, Karan!” Naina retorted, rolling her eyes. “You know, that magical time of the year when people are supposed to be cheerful?” “I’m cheerful,” he replied flatly. “Cheerful that it’ll be over in a week.” “Ugh, you’re impossible!” Naina snapped, standing up abruptly. “Why are you so anti-fun? Did Santa forget to leave presents under your tree when you were a kid?” “Maybe because there was no tree,” Karan shot back, his tone laced with sarcasm. Naina paused, catching the flicker of bitterness in his voice. “No tree?” she asked, her tone softening. Karan shrugged, avoiding her gaze. “Christmas wasn’t a thing in my house. My parents were more interested in deadlines and spreadsheets than decorating a tree.” For a moment, Naina felt a pang of sympathy. But it quickly turned into determination. “Well, that explains a lot. But it’s not too late to change, you know. Christmas isn’t just about the past—it’s about creating new memories.” “I’m fine with my lack of Christmas memories, thanks,” Karan replied, turning back to his work. Naina wasn’t giving up that easily. She leaned closer, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. “Challenge accepted.” “Challenge?” Karan raised an eyebrow. “Yes! By the end of the week, I’ll prove to you that Christmas is worth celebrating,” she declared. “And what happens if you fail?” he asked, his lips curving into a skeptical smirk. “I won’t fail,” Naina said confidently. “But if I do, I’ll take over your shift for New Year’s Eve.” Karan’s interest piqued. “Deal. But if you win, what do you get?” “You have to wear this.” Naina held up a ridiculous Christmas sweater she’d hidden behind her desk—a bright red monstrosity covered in reindeer and glitter. Karan stared at the sweater in horror. “You’re serious?” “Absolutely,” Naina said with a smug smile. Day 1: Decorating Disaster The next morning, Naina walked into the office early, armed with tinsel, baubles, and a miniature Christmas tree. She set about transforming the drab workspace into a festive wonderland. By the time Karan arrived, the office was unrecognizable. “What is all this?” he demanded, staring at the blinking lights and garlands draped over his desk. “It’s called holiday spirit,” Naina said cheerfully. “You should try it sometime.” Karan groaned. “This is a workplace, not a department store.” “Relax. It’s just for a week,” Naina said. “Besides, doesn’t it make you feel even a tiny bit happy?” “Annoyed, yes. Happy, no,” Karan replied. Naina sighed. “You’re hopeless.” Day 2: Secret Santa Sabotage Determined to soften Karan’s grumpy exterior, Naina organized a Secret Santa exchange. She rigged the draw so that Karan would receive a thoughtful gift—something to remind him of the joy of giving. When Karan unwrapped his present, he found a set of gourmet coffee beans. For a moment, his expression softened. “Who got this for me?” he asked. “It’s a secret,” Naina said, hiding her smile. But her plan backfired when Karan, who had drawn Naina’s name, handed her a gift-wrapped stapler. “A stapler? Really?” she asked, exasperated. “You said you wanted something practical,” Karan said with a smirk. Day 3: Carol Chaos On the third day, Naina convinced the office to participate in a caroling contest. To her surprise, Karan reluctantly joined in, albeit with minimal enthusiasm. As the team sang a slightly off-key rendition of Jingle Bells, Naina noticed Karan watching her with an amused expression. “What?” she asked during a break. “Nothing,” he said, shrugging. “You’re just… really into this, aren’t you?” “It’s called enjoying life,” she replied. Karan’s lips twitched, almost forming a smile. “Maybe you’re not as annoying as I thought.” “I’ll take that as a compliment,” Naina said, grinning. Day 4: Snowfall Surprise By the fourth day, Naina was running out of ideas. She decided to recreate a winter wonderland using artificial snow. As the team gathered in the breakroom, snowflakes floated down from the ceiling, eliciting gasps of delight. Even Karan looked impressed—until a rogue snow machine malfunctioned and sprayed him directly in the face. Naina stifled a laugh. “Oops.” Karan wiped the snow from his hair, glaring at her. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” “A little,” she admitted, unable to contain her laughter. --- Day 5: The Turning Point On the final day, Naina organized a Christmas dinner for the entire office. She spent hours decorating the conference room, setting up a feast, and even arranging for a Santa impersonator to distribute gifts. As the evening unfolded, Karan found himself relaxing. He watched as his colleagues laughed, exchanged presents, and sang carols. “You did a good job,” he admitted to Naina. “Thank you,” she said, her cheeks flushing. “See? Christmas isn’t so bad after all.” Karan hesitated before adding, “Maybe it’s not the holiday I hate. Maybe it’s just… hard to feel anything when you’ve spent so long avoiding it.” Naina placed a hand on his arm. “You don’t have to avoid it anymore. You can start fresh.” Their eyes met, and for a moment, the chaos around them faded. --- Epilogue: A New Beginning On Christmas morning, Naina arrived at the office to find a gift on her desk. Inside was a beautifully wrapped ornament shaped like a star. The note read: Thanks for proving me wrong. Merry Christmas. Naina smiled, her heart swelling. She looked up to see Karan standing in the doorway, wearing the hideous Christmas sweater. “You win,” he said with a shrug. Naina laughed. “You’re not so bad, you know.” “Neither are you,” Karan replied, his eyes twinkling. As the snow fell gently outside, the two shared a smile, the promise of something new lingering in the air.
