"A Deal in the Snow"
The cold wind bit at Naina Kapoor’s cheeks as she stepped into the family-owned Christmas shop, the faint jingling of bells above the door echoing in the quiet, snow-covered streets of the small town. It was her family’s legacy—passed down through generations—yet, despite all the love and memories embedded in the red-brick walls, it was on the verge of shutting down. The Christmas shop that once brought joy to hundreds of families during the holiday season was now barely hanging on.
As the only child, Naina had inherited the responsibility of keeping the business afloat after her parents retired. They had always kept the magic of Christmas alive, with handmade ornaments, cozy decorations, and festive treats. But ever since the financial crisis hit a few years ago, sales had plummeted. The influx of online shopping and big-box stores offering holiday goods at a fraction of the price had nearly wiped them out.
Naina had tried everything: hosting festive events, offering discounts, even collaborating with local businesses. But nothing seemed to work. The looming threat of a loan default haunted her every waking moment.
“Maybe it's time to let go,” she muttered to herself, staring at the empty shelves that should have been brimming with holiday cheer. The decorations, once vibrant and full of life, now looked tired and forgotten.
Just then, her phone buzzed. The screen displayed an unfamiliar number. Hesitating for a moment, she answered, “Hello?”
“Is this Ms. Kapoor?” A deep, confident voice replied from the other end.
“Yes, speaking.”
“My name is Karan Malhotra. I’m in need of an event planner for a private gala I’m hosting at a remote resort this holiday season. I’ve been told you might be the person I should reach out to.”
Naina’s heart raced. A high-profile event? This could be the break she needed. But something about the cold, formal tone of his voice didn’t sit right with her.
“That sounds wonderful,” she said, trying to keep the excitement in check. “What exactly are you looking for?”
“I need someone who can handle every detail, from decorations to entertainment. But there's a catch: the event requires a certain image—an engaged couple.”
Naina blinked. An engaged couple? This was new. “I'm not sure I understand,” she said cautiously.
“I need a partner to attend this event with me. Someone who will fit the part. We’ll pose as a couple—nothing romantic, just business. I’m sure you’ve heard of these types of arrangements before.”
A fake engagement? Naina’s mind raced. It was certainly unconventional, but the idea of securing such a high-profile gig—one that could turn her business around—was tempting.
“Are you offering me the job if I… pose as your fiancée?” Naina asked, incredulous.
“Precisely. I can help with the logistics, and you can plan the rest. You’ll be well compensated for your time,” Karan’s voice was firm, almost rehearsed. “The arrangement is simple. You pretend to be my fiancée for the duration of the event, and we both walk away with what we need.”
Naina hesitated, feeling a sense of unease wash over her. But then, she glanced at the shop around her—once vibrant, now filled with faded memories. The loan was overdue. They needed a miracle.
“I’ll take the job,” she said, before she could second-guess herself.

A week later, Naina found herself at a luxurious mountain resort, the location for the gala. The picturesque setting, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and twinkling holiday lights, was nothing short of breathtaking. However, Naina couldn’t help but feel a sense of foreboding. She had agreed to a fake engagement, but this wasn’t the kind of fairy tale she had imagined.
Karan Malhotra stood in the grand foyer, dressed in an impeccably tailored suit, his piercing dark eyes scanning the room. He was everything Naina expected—cold, serious, and businesslike. His stern expression never wavered, even as he shook her hand for the first time.
“Ms. Kapoor,” Karan greeted her with a polite, almost distant smile. “I’m glad you could make it. I trust the preparations are on track?”
“Of course,” Naina replied, trying to shake off her nerves. “I’ll make sure everything is perfect. The decorations will be ready, and I’ve arranged for the catering as per your specifications.”
“Good,” Karan said curtly. “Remember, the key here is professionalism. No one must suspect that this engagement is anything other than legitimate.”
Naina nodded, though she couldn’t help but feel a pang of discomfort. The way Karan spoke, with such an air of control, made her wonder if he ever truly let his guard down.
---
Over the next few days, Naina worked tirelessly to organize the event. But the closer she got to Karan, the more complex things became. She had expected a professional partnership, but Karan’s cold, aloof demeanor made their interactions feel like anything but. He was polite but distant, almost as if he was physically and emotionally untouchable.
During their rehearsals for the gala, they were forced to practice public displays of affection—something that felt increasingly awkward as the days passed. Naina, with her natural warmth and easygoing nature, found herself growing frustrated with Karan’s unyielding professionalism.
“Do you ever let your guard down?” she asked one evening, as they stood in front of a massive fireplace, preparing for another practice kiss for the gala. “Or is everything always so… calculated?”
Karan’s gaze softened, though only for a moment. “I don’t have the luxury of being reckless,” he replied quietly, his voice tinged with something Naina couldn’t quite decipher.
“I’m just trying to make sure we don’t mess this up,” Naina said, feeling the tension building between them. “But I can’t keep pretending this is normal.”
Karan didn’t respond immediately. He studied her for a long moment before finally speaking. “You’re right. But this is what needs to be done. You’re here to help me with the event, and I’m here to help you. We both have a lot at stake.”
Naina felt a knot form in her stomach. There was something about Karan’s words that made her wonder if this arrangement was more than just business for him. She could sense the emotional walls he had carefully built around himself, and yet… she couldn’t help but feel drawn to him, in spite of the cold exterior.
---
The night of the gala arrived, and the venue was transformed into a winter wonderland, with crystal chandeliers casting a warm glow over the guests. The air was thick with excitement and expectation, and Naina, in her elegant silver gown, found herself once again standing beside Karan.
For the first time, Karan’s eyes softened when he looked at her. His hand, though firm, was warm against hers as they walked through the crowd, posing for photographers, exchanging pleasantries with clients and guests. To the outside world, they were the perfect couple—the kind of power duo everyone envied.
But as the night wore on, Naina realized something unexpected. Beneath the façade of their fake engagement, there was a spark—a connection neither of them could deny. The more they interacted, the more Naina saw the man beneath the business-like exterior: a man who, despite his success, carried a burden of loneliness and regret.
As the evening drew to a close, Naina found herself lost in thought. Karan had been kind, attentive even, but still distant. She could see that his emotional walls were as strong as ever. But somehow, despite everything, she was beginning to wonder if their deal had created something far more real than either of them had anticipated.
And perhaps, just perhaps, there was more to this fake engagement than just business.
