Back at the Estate

The taxi pulled through the grand white gates of Hart Estate just after nine o'clock that evening. The journey home from the airport had been almost silent. Pearl-May sat staring at her phone. She pressed Call once more. Sienna ❤️ The phone rang... Then went straight to voicemail. "The person you are trying to reach is unavailable. Please leave a message after the tone." Pearl-May ended the call, her eyes filling with tears. "She still isn't answering." Alexander took out his own phone. "Let me try." He called. Again... Voicemail. He lowered the phone with a heavy sigh. "I don't blame her." The taxi stopped outside the mansion. Alexander paid the driver while Jordan sleepily climbed out, rubbing his eyes. Willow followed behind without saying a word. As Pearl-May unlocked the front door, the familiar scent of the house greeted them But something immediately caught Alexander's attention. On the oak table in the entrance hall... Sat a crystal trophy. Beside it were several framed competition certificates. And resting neatly on top... A folded envelope. Across the front, in Sienna's neat handwriting, were the words: For Mum and Dad. Pearl-May's hand flew to her mouth. "Oh, Alexander..." Alexander slowly picked up the envelope. For a moment, neither of them moved. The trophy sparkled under the hallway light. Pearl-May recognised it immediately. "That's... today's trophy." Alexander looked down at it. "She left it here." Jordan walked over. "She won..." He smiled proudly. "I knew she would." Pearl-May looked at the certificates. There wasn't just one. There were five. Five first-place certificates. One for each year she had won the county art competition. She stared at them in disbelief. "We've never even seen them." Alexander felt a knot form in his stomach. Five years. Five victories. Five moments they had missed. He looked at the envelope in his hand. "I don't think I'm ready to read this." Pearl-May took a shaky breath. "I don't think we have a choice." With trembling hands, Alexander carefully opened the letter. The entire family stood in silence... Knowing that whatever Sienna had written... Would be straight from their heart. Pearl stood beside him, unable to take his eyes off the five certificates and the crystal trophy resting on the oak table. Jordan quietly moved closer. Even Willow stood silently at the foot of the staircase. Pearl-May took a deep breath and began to read aloud. «Dear Mum and Dad, By the time you read this, I'll be on my way to Texas to spend the winter break with Grandma and Gramps. I need a little time away to heal my heart and to think. Today should have been one of the happiest days of my life. Winning the county art competition for the fifth year in a row is something I'll always be proud of.But turned out to be the day that made me realise I will never be apart of your family But all I could think about was the four empty seats I had saved for you. Every time the doors opened, I looked up, hoping it was you. I kept telling myself, "They'll be here in a minute."But you never came. I understand that Willow was upset, and I don't blame either of you for wanting to help her. What hurt was feeling that, once again, I came afterthought. Dad... When I said, "Do you even care." "I'm your daughter too," I meant every word. I have never wanted to compete with Willow. I only ever wanted to know that I mattered just as much but somehow I think i am a burden that lives off you. Mum... Thank you for always trying to keep everyone together. I know you love me, and I love you too. but you always too busy to actually recognises that I need my mum Please don't think I'm leaving because I hate you. I'm leaving because I need to be somewhere I don't feel invisible and that not with you Grandma and Gramps have always made me feel like I belong, and right now, I think I need that. Please don't worry about me. I'll be safe. I hope that when I come decided to home, we can start again—not as the family we've become, but as the family we could be. I love you both more than you probably realise. Love always, Sienna» Pearl-May couldn't read another word. She lowered the letter as tears streamed down her face. Alexander stood completely still. His eyes drifted to the crystal trophy. Then to the five certificates. Five years. Five first-place finishes. Not once had he stood in the audience. Jordan quietly wiped away a tear. "I miss her already." Alexander slowly picked up the trophy. His reflection stared back at him in the crystal. He whispered to himself, "She still told us she loved us..." Pearl-May nodded through her tears. "After everything..." "She still signed it 'Love always.'" The silence that filled the mansion felt heavier than any words. For the first time, the Hart family truly understood that the greatest prize Sienna had wanted wasn't the trophy sitting on the table. It had simply been seeing her parents smiling in the audience Pearl-May quietly climbed the staircase, still clutching Sienna's letter. Alexander followed a few steps behind. "Jordan," Pearl-May said gently, "why don't you stay downstairs for a little while?" Jordan nodded. "Okay, Mum." Willow looked as though she wanted to follow. Alexander stopped her with a calm but firm voice. "No, Willow." "This is something your mother and I need to do alone." Willow hesitated before reluctantly turning back towards the family room. Alexander and Pearl-May continued down the hallway until they reached Sienna's bedroom door. Pearl-May rested her hand on the handle for a moment before slowly opening it. The room was spotless. The bed was neatly made. Paintbrushes were carefully arranged in a jar on the desk. Sketchbooks were stacked in perfect piles. Country music still played softly from a small speaker on the windowsill. The curtains were slightly open, revealing the moonlit sea beyond the cliffs. Pearl-May's eyes immediately fell upon the wardrobe. The doors were open. Half of the clothes were gone. The shelves looked empty. Alexander noticed the space where Sienna's favourite brown cowboy boots had once been. "She's really gone," he whispered. Pearl-May walked over to Sienna's desk. An unfinished painting rested on the easel. It showed the cliffs below the estate at sunset. In the corner of the canvas, written in tiny letters, was Sienna's signature. Pearl-May gently ran her fingers over the edge of the frame. "I never realised how talented she really is." Alexander looked around the room. Every wall held sketches, landscapes and paintings. Some were framed. Others were pinned neatly to a corkboard. There were dozens of them. He swallowed hard. "How many have we actually seen?" Pearl-May looked at him with tear-filled eyes. "Not many." Alexander picked up one sketch. It showed a little girl holding the hand of an elderly couple on a ranch, all three smiling beneath a huge Texas sky. There was no mansion. No expensive cars. Just three people who looked happy to be together. On the back, written in Sienna's handwriting, were the words: 'Home isn't a place. It's the people who make you feel loved.' Alexander sat down on the edge of her bed. His shoulders slumped. "I spent years trying to build the perfect home for my family." He looked around the room. "But I forgot that a house..." "...isn't the same as a home." Pearl-May sat beside him and rested her head on his shoulder. For the first time in many years... The two parents sat in their daughter's room, surrounded by the quiet evidence of the life she had built without asking for very much at all. And both silently wondered the same thing. How had they failed to truly see the gentle, talented girl who had been living just down the hall all along. Alexander sat quietly on the edge of Sienna's bed. The silence in the room was overwhelming. His eyes wandered to the neatly stacked sketchbooks on her desk. Without saying a word, he reached over and picked one up. As he opened it, a single tear rolled down his cheek. Pearl-May looked at him in surprise. She couldn't remember the last time she had seen her husband cry. Alexander's voice was barely a whisper. "What if she hates us now?, does she hate me?" Pearl-May immediately took his hand. "She doesn't." "How do you know?" "Because she told us she loved us." Alexander lowered his head. "But we abandoned her when she needed us most. when we promised" "She only wanted us to see her." His voice cracked. "One afternoon..." "That's all she asked for." Unable to hold back any longer, Alexander broke down. Years of regret poured out in tears. Pearl-May wrapped her arms around him, crying with him. After a few moments, Alexander wiped his eyes and looked down at the sketchbook resting in his lap. He slowly began turning the pages. Every drawing revealed another piece of Sienna's world. Landscapes. Wildflowers. The sea. Horses. Jordan laughing. Kristopher sitting on the beach. Grandma baking in the ranch kitchen. Gramps mending a fence. Each page was filled with incredible detail. Then... Alexander stopped. His breath caught in his throat. Spread across two pages was a pencil drawing of their family. It was so lifelike that it almost looked like a photograph. Every detail had been carefully captured. Pearl-May standing with one hand resting gently on Jordan's shoulder. Willow smiling confidently. Alexander standing proudly behind them. Jordan grinning from ear to ear. And Sienna... Standing beside them with a hopeful smile, looking towards her parents. Above them, in elegant handwriting, Sienna had written: "My family isn't perfect... but I still dream that one day we'll all stand together." Alexander stared at the drawing in silence. His tears began falling again. "After everything..." He swallowed hard. "She still drew us together." Pearl-May gently traced the edge of the page. "She never stopped loving us.she just stopped believing in us." Alexander nodded, unable to speak. At the bottom corner of the sketch was a tiny note, almost hidden among the shading. "Maybe one day this won't just be a drawing." Alexander closed the sketchbook against his chest. "I've spent years thinking I had everything." He looked around Sienna's room. "But the one thing I should have protected the most..." He broke down once more. "...was the little girl who still believed we could be a happy family." Pearl-May rested her head against his shoulder. "We're going to bring her home." Alexander gently shook his head. "No." He looked towards the moonlit sea outside Sienna's window. "We're going to earn the right for her to want to come home.” Alexander carefully placed the sketchbook back on Sienna's desk. He sat quietly for a moment before reaching into his pocket and taking out his phone. Pearl-May watched him. "What are you doing?" Alexander unlocked the screen. "I'm not going to keep calling Sienna." Pearl-May looked confused. "Why not?" "Because she's asked for space." "If I really want to prove I've listened..." "I have to respect that." He opened his messages and selected his older brother's name. Kenny 🤠 Kenny still lived on the family ranch in Texas and worked alongside Gramps every day. Alexander began to type. «Hi, Kenny. Dad has probably already told you what's happened. Sienna is on her way to the ranch for the winter break. Could you do me a favour? Please keep an eye on her for me. Don't smother her—just make sure she's okay. She'll probably pretend she's fine, but I know she's hurting. And... tell her I love her if the moment feels right. Love, Alex.» He pressed Send. A few seconds later, he opened another message. This time... Dad Alexander stared at the screen before typing slowly. «Dad, I know I've let Sienna down, and I understand if she doesn't want to see us right now. I'm going to respect the space she's asked for. But if, in a few days' time, she's comfortable with it... would you ask her whether she'd be willing to let Pearl, Jordan, Willow and me come to the ranch? Only if she's happy for us to come. I don't want to force our way into her safe place. If she says no, I'll respect her decision. Love, Alex.» He read the message one last time before pressing Send. Pearl-May rested a hand on his shoulder. "I think that's the right thing to do." Alexander nodded. "For once..." "This isn't about what I want." "It's about what Sienna needs." He slipped his phone back into his pocket. "If she wants more time..." "We'll give her more time." "If she wants to see us..." "We'll be on the first flight to Texas." Pearl-May smiled sadly. "I hope she says yes." Alexander looked around Sienna's room one last time. "So do I." "But after everything that's happened..." "I think we've lost the right to expect anything." "Now..." "We have to earn it.”
