Monday, 14th December
After a relaxing weekend spent catching up with family, sharing homemade meals and enjoying the peaceful rhythm of Paradise Valley Ranch, Monday morning arrived bright and crisp.
The smell of bacon, fresh coffee and homemade biscuits drifted through the ranch house as everyone gathered for breakfast.
Gramps tapped his mug with a spoon to get everyone's attention.
"Right then."
"The holiday is over."
The boys exchanged amused looks.
Gramps smiled.
"You came here as guests."
"But while you're staying at Paradise Valley..."
"You're ranch hands."
Gramps unfolded a notebook.
"I've got a few jobs that need doing before Christmas."
He looked at Kristopher first.
"You and William are cleaning out the horse stables."
William nodded.
"Yes, sir."
"Josh and Paul..."
"You're helping Kenny chop and stack firewood for the house and cabins."
Josh grinned.
"I've never chopped wood before."
Kenny chuckled.
"You'll know how by lunchtime."
Gramps looked around the table.
"Nobody works alone around here."
"If someone's finished early, you help the others."
The four boys nodded together.
"Understood."
After breakfast, they pulled on work gloves, jackets and cowboy boots before heading outside into the cool Texas morning.
The stables were already alive with the sounds of horses neighing softly.
Kristopher picked up a wheelbarrow.
William grabbed a shovel.
"Let's get started."
Across the yard, Kenny handed Josh and Paul an axe each.
"First lesson."
"Don't try to be strong."
"Use the weight of the axe."
"Let it do the work."
Paul swung first.
The axe bounced harmlessly off the log.
Kenny burst into laughter.
"I've seen butterflies hit harder than that."
Everyone laughed, including Paul.
An hour later, the woodpile had doubled in size, while the stables looked spotless.
Gramps smiled proudly.
"Not bad for your first morning."
Once the morning jobs were finished, Kenny clapped his hands together.
"Right."
"Time for something more enjoyable."
He led the boys towards the horse paddocks.
Waiting patiently by the fence stood five beautiful horses.
Kristopher's eyes widened.
"They're incredible."
Kenny smiled.
"Before any of you go riding across my ranch..."
"You're going to learn how to ride properly."
He walked over to a gentle chestnut mare.
"This is Daisy."
"She's patient, calm and perfect for beginners."
Kenny spent the next hour teaching the boys how to approach a horse respectfully, how to saddle it correctly and how to mount safely.
"Remember," he said, patting Daisy's neck.
"Horses know if you're nervous."
"So stay calm."
"They'll trust you if you earn it."
Sienna watched from the fence, smiling as Kristopher slowly gained confidence in the saddle.
She couldn't help laughing when Josh almost lost his balance and grabbed the saddle horn with both hands.
"I thought wrestling would be easier than this," Josh joked.
Kenny laughed.
"That horse weighs half a ton."
"Trust me..."
"She's in charge until you learn otherwise."
The whole ranch echoed with laughter.
It was hard work.
It was honest work.
And for the first time in years...
Sienna felt like Christmas was beginning exactly where it should—surrounded by family, friends and the people who made Paradise Valley truly feel like home.
The morning continued at Paradise Valley Ranch.
Out in the paddock, Uncle Kenny was putting the boys through their paces.
"Sit up straight, Kristopher."
"William, loosen the reins a little."
"Josh... stop looking at the ground."
"If you keep looking at the ground, that's exactly where you'll end up."
Paul laughed as Josh almost lost his stirrup.
"I thought wrestling was difficult."
Kenny grinned.
"You haven't even started ranch life yet."
Their laughter drifted across the fields.
Watching from the porch, Sienna couldn't help smiling.
Gramps noticed immediately.
"There's the smile I've been waiting to see."
He looked at Grandma
Sweetheart, would you mind borrowing our granddaughter for a few minutes?"
Grandma smiled warmly.
"Come and sit with us."
Sienna walked over and sat between her grandparents on the porch steps.
For a little while, the three of them simply watched the boys riding beneath the bright Texas sky.
Finally, Gramps broke the silence.
"How's your heart doing, sweetheart?"
Sienna looked across the ranch before answering honestly.
"It still hurts."
She lowered her eyes.
"But... not as much as it did when I first got here."
Grandma gently took her hand.
"You don't ever have to pretend with us."
"I know," Sienna replied softly.
Gramps reached into his shirt pocket and took out his phone.
"There's something we need to ask you."
Sienna looked at him.
"What is it?"
"Your dad sent me another message this morning."
She looked away towards the paddock.
"He asked if I'd speak to you."
Grandma quickly added,
"But only because he wanted us to ask."
"He also made it very clear that if you're not ready, he'll understand."
Gramps nodded.
"He'd like to come out to Paradise Valley in a few days with your mum, Jordan and Willow."
"But only if you're happy for them to come."
"We told him the decision belongs entirely to you."
"If you say no, we'll respect that."
"If you need more time, we'll respect that too."
The porch fell silent.
Sienna watched Kristopher gently calming his horse after Uncle Kenny corrected his posture.
A small smile crossed her face before fading again.
She took a deep breath.
"I... I need some time to think about it."
She looked at both of her grandparents.
"This isn't something I can answer straight away."
Grandma squeezed her hand reassuringly.
"And that's perfectly alright, sweetheart."
Sienna nodded.
"I don't want to make a decision while my emotions are still all over the place."
She looked at Gramps.
"Could you give me until this evening?"
"I promise I'll have an answer for you then."
Gramps smiled warmly.
"Of course you can."
"Take today."
"Take this evening."
"If you needed another week, we'd give you another week."
Grandma kissed the top of Sienna's head.
"Whatever your answer is..."
"We'll stand beside you."
Sienna smiled gratefully.
"Thank you."
"I just want to make sure it's the right decision... for me."
Gramps gently rested his hand on her shoulder.
"And for the first time in a long while..."
"That's exactly whose feelings matter most."
Sienna looked back towards the paddock, where Kristopher laughed as Josh nearly slid sideways in the saddle, sending everyone—including Uncle Kenny—into fits of laughter.
A small smile returned to her face.
For now...
She wasn't thinking about the pain waiting for her back in Los Angeles.
She was simply enjoying being surrounded by the people who loved her, while knowing that, this time, the choice would be hers.
After spending a few more minutes with her grandparents
