The Journey Begin

By early afternoon, Paradise Valley Ranch was buzzing with activity. The shopping had been unpacked, decorations were slowly finding their place around the house, and the smell of Grandma's baking drifted through every room. Gramps looked up at the old grandfather clock in the hallway. 1:30 p.m. He called across the kitchen. "Kenny." His eldest son looked up from the splitting kindling outside the back door. "Yeah, Dad?" "It's time. They'll be landing soon,I need you to head to Dallas Airport and pick your brother, Pearl and the children up." Kenny stopped what he was doing. For a brief moment, his jaw tightened. He wasn't looking forward to it. Alexander had been his younger brother, but over the years Kenny had watched him become so consumed by work and status that he'd failed to notice what was happening to his own daughter. Part of Kenny was still angry and wanted to hit him not because Alexander had made mistake because those mistakes had hurt Sienna And ‘I protect my family even from family’ Gramps saw the hesitation. "I know, son." Kenny sighed quietly. "I'm not exactly excited about spending three hours in a truck with him." Gramps gave him a sympathetic smile. "I didn't expect you to be but you're not doing this for Alexander. You're doing it for your niece." Kenny nodded slowly. "I know! If Sienna has found it in her heart to give him another chance, the least I can do is give him a lift from the airport." Gramps smiled proudly. "That's all I'm asking." Kenny picked up the truck keys from the kitchen counter. "I'll bring them straight back." Rachel walked over and gently kissed his cheek. "Drive carefully." "I always do." She smiled. "I know." As Kenny reached the front door, Gramps called after him. "One more thing." Kenny turned around. "When they get here, remember they're guests, but remember something else too." Kenny raised an eyebrow. "This is Sienna's home, If at any point she needs protecting, We protect her." Kenny didn't hesitate. "Always! She's my niece before he's my brother." Gramps nodded. "I knew you'd say that." Kenny stepped outside into the gently falling snow. The cold air hit his face as he climbed into the ranch pickup. He started the engine and looked towards the house for a moment. "I'm doing this for you, kiddo," he murmured. "Not for him." With that, he pulled away from Paradise Valley Ranch and headed towards Dallas Airport, hoping the journey back would be the first step in healing a family that had been broken for far too long. The drive to Dallas Airport was quiet. With the hum of the radio. Snow flurries drifted across the windscreen as Kenny followed the highway out of Jupiter. After about forty minutes, he spotted a small roadside convenience store. He pulled the truck into the car park. "Might as well," he muttered to himself. Inside, he wandered up and down the aisles before filling a small basket. Chocolate bars. Gummy sweets. Packets of crisps. A couple of bottles of soda. Then he smiled to himself and picked up Jordan's favourite peanut butter cups. "That lad could empty a sweet shop if you let him." After paying, he climbed back into the truck, placing the bag on the passenger seat. "Welcome to Texas, nephew. I've got you covered." --- 3:15 p.m. High above Dallas, the captain's voice came over the aircraft speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, we've begun our descent into Dallas. Cabin crew, please prepare the cabin for landing." Alexander looked out of the window. The Texas landscape stretched beneath them, dusted with an unexpected blanket of snow. His stomach tightened. In less than three hour... He would see his daughter. For the first time since she'd walked away from the estate beside him, Pearl quietly reached for his hand. Neither of them spoke. There were no words that could ease the nerves they both felt. --- A short time later, the aircraft touched down smoothly. After making their way through the terminal, the Hart family arrived at baggage claim. The conveyor belt slowly began carrying suitcases into the hall. Jordan bounced excitedly beside it. "I can't wait to see Sienna, I've missed her." Pearl smiled sadly. "I know you have." Jordan looked at his parents. "Do you think she'll hug me?" Pearl's eyes filled with emotion. "I hope she will." Alexander rested a reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. "I think she will, If anyone deserves a hug...It's you." Jordan smiled. "I've got loads to tell her, I want to show her the sketchbook I bought and tell her I'm sorry I didn't notice how sad she was." Alexander swallowed the lump in his throat. "You can tell her yourself." Across from them, Willow stood quietly beside the luggage trolley. She wasn't scrolling on her phone. She wasn't complaining. She simply watched the suitcases appear one by one. Finally, she spoke. "I've been thinking about what Grandad said." Pearl looked at her. "And?" Willow took a slow breath. "I treated Sienna terribly. I kept putting her down because..." She paused. "...because I liked being the centre of attention." Tears welled in her eyes. "I didn't realise how much I was hurting her." Alexander looked at his eldest daughter. "What matters now is what you do next." Willow nodded. "I know, I'm not expecting her to forgive me. I just..." She looked down. "I want the chance to tell her I'm sorry." Pearl gently slipped an arm around her shoulders. "That's all anyone can ask." Alexander looked around the busy baggage hall. His heart pounded. Every minute that passed brought them closer to Paradise Valley. Closer to Sienna. Closer to facing the consequences of everything they had failed to see. He quietly whispered to himself, "Please let us get this right." For the first time in years... The Hart family weren't travelling for work. They weren't travelling for luxury. They were travelling with one hope—To begin earning back the trust of the daughter and sister they had almost lost. The automatic doors slid open, and the Hart family stepped into the arrivals hall. Jordan scanned the crowd excitedly. Then his face lit up. "Uncle Kenny!" Without waiting another second, he sprinted across the floor, Kenny barely had time to brace himself before Jordan threw his arms around him. "Easy there, buddy!" Kenny laughed, hugging his nephew tightly. "You've grown another inch since I last saw you." "I've missed you!" Jordan grinned. "I've missed you too." A moment later, Willow walked over more quietly. Kenny smiled warmly at her and opened his arms. She accepted the hug. "It's good to see you, Willow." "You too, Uncle Kenny." He studied her for a second before giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "You alright?" She nodded. "I will be." Pearl and Alexander approached more slowly. Kenny greeted Pearl first. "It's good to see you, Pearl." He gave his sister-in-law a brief but genuine hug. "You too, Kenny." "I wish it were under happier circumstances." "So do I," he replied quietly. Finally, Kenny looked at Alexander. For several seconds, neither brother spoke. Years of shared memories stood between them.So did the hurt Sienna had carried. At last, Kenny gave a single respectful nod. "Alexander." "Kenneth." Alexander returned the nod. He understood exactly what it meant. Kenny wasn't pretending everything was fine. He wasn't ready to welcome him with a smile or a hug. Alexander couldn't blame him. He knew his older brother better than anyone. Kenny had always been fiercely protective of the people he loved. If someone hurt one of his family, Kenny never forgot it. Alexander thought to himself, If we were somewhere private, he'd probably have punched me by now And honestly. I deserve it. The fact that Kenny had simply greeted him with a nod was, under the circumstances, more respect than Alexander felt he deserved. "I'm glad you came," Kenny said at last. Alexander met his brother's eyes. "Thank you for picking us up." Kenny gave another short nod. "I'm doing this for Sienna." "I know," Alexander answered honestly. And I appreciate it." Kenny picked up two of the suitcases. "The truck's outside." As they walked through the airport together, the silence between the two brothers wasn't comfortable...But it wasn't hostile either. It was the silence of two men who both loved the same girl—One who had protected her for years. And one who was finally trying to become the father she had always needed.
