The Competition Hall at Windlong Hart Academy buzzed with excitement.
Rows of chairs stretched across the room, already filled with proud parents, grandparents, teachers and friends. The walls were lined with paintings from the county's most talented young artists, each displayed on its own easel behind a velvet rope. Once submitted, none of the artwork could be touched until the judging had been completed.
Sienna stood quietly with the other finalists, smoothing the sleeves of her navy-blue dress.
Her shell necklace rested against her collarbone.
She looked towards the entrance.
Not yet.
The large clock above the stage read 1:45 p.m.
"They'll be here," Kristopher said gently as he walked over.
He had changed out of his school uniform into a smart shirt and dark blazer for the event.
William, Josh and Paul stood close behind him.
"We've saved seats for your family," William said with a warm smile.
Sienna's face brightened.
"Thank you."
She looked back towards the doors.
More families arrived.
Children waved excitedly as grandparents hugged them.
Cameras flashed.
Flowers were handed over.
Every few moments, Sienna glanced up again.
Still no sign of Pearl-May.
Or Alexander.
Or Jordan.
At 1:55 p.m., Miss Bullmastiffs approached.
"You all right, Sienna?"
"Yes, Miss."
"You seem distracted."
"I'm just waiting for my family."
"I'm sure they'll be here."
Sienna nodded, trying to believe it herself.
The clock ticked on.
1:58 p.m.
Students began taking their places.
The audience settled into silence.
Kristopher quietly squeezed Sienna's shoulder.
"They're probably stuck in traffic."
She forced a smile.
"Maybe."
Then...
The doors opened.
Sienna's heart leapt.
She turned eagerly—
Only to see another family walking in, laughing together.
Her smile faded.
The clock reached 2:00 p.m.
The competition began.
The head judge stepped onto the stage.
"Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the Fifth Annual Windlong Hart County Young Artists Competition..."
As applause filled the hall, Sienna couldn't stop herself from looking towards the entrance one last time.
The three seats Kristopher and William had saved remained empty.
Completely empty.
Kristopher followed her gaze.
Without saying a word, he quietly moved his chair closer to hers.
"You don't have to keep looking," he whispered kindly.
"They're not here."
Sienna took a slow breath.
A flicker of disappointment crossed her face.
Then she straightened her shoulders.
"If they can't see my painting..."
She smiled faintly.
"I'll still paint for the people who can, why am i even bothering if they don't even rememberi exist"
Kristopher smiled with quiet pride.
"That's my Sea."
Across the hall, the judges began walking slowly from painting to painting.
The room fell silent.
The results would soon change everything.
The Winner
The Competition Hall fell completely silent.
The judges had spent nearly an hour carefully studying every painting, taking notes and quietly discussing each piece.
Now they stood together on the stage.
The chief judge stepped up to the microphone.
"I would first like to congratulate every student who entered this year's Windlong Hart County Young Artists Competition."
A round of applause echoed through the hall.
"The standard this year has been exceptional."
Sienna clasped her hands together.
Her heart pounded.
Kristopher, William, Josh and Paul sat together in the front row, smiling encouragingly.
"The judges have reached a unanimous decision."
A large screen lit up behind the stage, displaying photographs of the finalists' artwork.
"We will begin with third place..."
Another student walked onto the stage to receive their medal.
Applause filled the hall.
"And now..."
"Second place..."
Again, applause rang out as another talented artist accepted their award.
Sienna swallowed.
There was only one place left.
The chief judge smiled.
"For five consecutive years, one young artist has shown not only remarkable technical ability..."
"...but the rare gift of telling a story through paint."
He paused.
"This year's first-place winner..."
"...and Windlong Hart County Young Artist Champion..."
"...is..."
He opened the envelope.
"SIENNA HART!"
For a heartbeat...
Sienna couldn't move.
The hall erupted into applause.
Kristopher was the first person on his feet.
"I knew it!"
He clapped so hard his hands stung.
William, Josh and Paul quickly stood beside him, cheering louder than almost anyone else in the room.
"Come on, Sea!"
"You did it!"
"We told you!"
Miss Bullmastiffs wiped away a proud tear.
"I knew she could."
Still in shock, Sienna slowly walked onto the stage.
The chief judge smiled warmly as he handed her a beautiful crystal trophy.
"Congratulations, Sienna."
"You have now won this competition for an extraordinary fifth consecutive year."
The audience rose for a standing ovation.
Sienna looked out across the sea of faces.
She saw teachers.
Friends.
Kristopher.
William.
Josh.
Paul.
Miss Bullmastiffs.
Then...
Her eyes found the Four empty seats reserved for her family.
No Mum.
No Dad.
No Willow
No Jordan.
The smile on her face faltered for just a moment.
The chief judge noticed.
"Would you like to say a few words?"
Sienna stepped towards the microphone, holding the trophy carefully.
She took a deep breath.
"Thank you."
"I never paint to win."
"I paint because art lets people see the things words sometimes can't."
She smiled gently.
"I want to thank Miss Bullmastiffs for believing in me."
The art teacher smiled proudly.
"I'd also like to thank my grandparents in Texas."
"They couldn't be here today because my Gramps injured his foot."
"They've always believed in me."
Her voice wavered slightly.
"And..."
She looked towards the front row.
"...I'd like to thank my best friend."
Kristopher looked completely caught off guard.
Sienna smiled.
"Kristopher Moussaka."
"When the world made me feel invisible...Thank you"
"You never did."
The hall became silent.
"You reminded me that being kind is never something to be ashamed of."
A few people quietly wiped tears from their eyes.
Kristopher lowered his head, embarrassed by the attention, but smiling all the same.
Sienna lifted her trophy.
"This award belongs to everyone who believed in me..."
"...even when I didn't believe in myself."
The applause that followed was louder than before.
Standing in the front row, Kristopher smiled proudly.
He whispered just loud enough for William to hear,
"I told you."
"She never needed luck."
"She only needed people to finally see what was there all along.”
Sienna stepped down from the stage, the crystal trophy held carefully against her chest.
People congratulated her as she walked through the hall.
"Well done!"
"Five years in a row!"
"That's incredible!"
She smiled politely and thanked everyone, but her eyes kept drifting towards the entrance.
Her family still hadn't arrived.
Quietly, she slipped away from the crowd and found a quiet corner near the windows.
She took her phone out of her pocket.
Mum.
She pressed call.
It rang...
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then the call went to voicemail.
Sienna lowered the phone.
"It's okay," she whispered to herself. "She's probably in traffic."
She tried again.
This time she called Dad.
The phone rang several times before disconnecting.
No answer.
She stared at the screen for a few moments before sending a message.
«Hi Mum, hi Dad. The competition has finished. I won first place again. I hope you're okay. Where are you?»
She read the message twice before pressing Send.
No reply.
A lump formed in her throat.
She wasn't angry.
She was worried.
They had promised.
Behind her, Kristopher quietly approached but didn't interrupt.
He could see Sienna checking her phone every few seconds.
Still nothing.
William, Josh and Paul exchanged concerned looks from across the hall.
After several more minutes, Sienna tried calling one last time.
Again...
No answer.
She slowly lowered the phone, staring at the blank screen.
Kristopher walked over and stood beside her.
"Any luck?"
She gave a small shake of her head.
"No."
"They're not answering."
Kristopher looked at her gently.
"They've never ignored you before when you've called after something important, have they?"
Sienna thought for a moment.
"No..."
"That's why I'm worried."
She held the trophy a little tighter.
"I just want to know they're okay."
Kristopher nodded.
"I'm sure we'll find out soon."
Sienna slipped her phone back into her pocket.
"I hope so."
Together, they turned back towards the celebration, but every few moments Sienna couldn't help touching her phone, hoping it would light up with a message from her parents.
It never did.
