My alpha had never welcomed my touch, and I had always believed it was because he simply didn't know how to let humans in. That was until seven years later, when I overheard him behind a closed door admitting that he had hated me all along. He blamed me for taking him away first in the middle of that deadly blizzard.

The truth was the werewolf brothers, who had lost their parents, had fallen for my sister, Chloe Miller, the moment they saw her. And the fragile bond I had believed was meant for me was nothing but a discarded link he had buried and ignored for seven years.

In the end, I learned that in his version of the story, I wasn't his savior—but the one who had cost him his true love.

When the clerk asked a third time if I was sure about ending my relationship with Rowan Blake, I nodded.

Chapter 1
Seven years ago, a brutal blizzard buried the road connecting Miller Town to the forest. When the storm passed, my sister, Chloe Miller, and I found two bloody wolf pups beside an old vehicle that had tumbled down the slope. They were twins. The older one, Nolan Hale, reached Chloe first, while I wrapped Rowan Hale in my coat. Later, the judge approved temporary guardianship, and the four of us grew up together. That night, when the two boys woke up, their golden eyes flashed at the exact same moment. I always believed Rowan had been looking at me. So for seven years, even when he barely spoke to me or gave me anything in return, I kept making excuses. Werewolves were known for being reserved. Maybe he simply wasn't good at showing affection. Until tonight, when I went to the back entrance of the bar to return the car keys he had forgotten. Someone inside chuckled and asked, "Ava put you through school and bought a place near your company. Why do you still treat her like a stranger?" Rowan let out a cold laugh. "Did I ever ask her to?" "That's seriously cold." "If she hadn't gotten to me first and carried me into that car back then, the person standing beside Chloe today would have been me." Another werewolf lowered his voice. "But didn't you and Ava awaken a potential mate bond?" The laughter faded. The silence stretched on for so long I could hear my own heartbeat. Then Rowan spoke. "I don't accept that bond. If I don't acknowledge it. It means nothing." Someone laughed awkwardly. "I get it. The two sisters are worlds apart. I mean, who would pick Ava when Chloe is right there?" The keys slipped from my fingers and fell silently onto the carpet. Seven years ago—on that snowy night—the truth finally took on a different meaning. The light in Rowan's eyes had never been for me. It was because Chloe had been standing behind me all along. The last bit of hope I had clung to for seven years finally disappeared.
