Jax's POV
My face stung. Lord, she could hit the living daylight out of the devil.
Her hand quickly covered her chest and I rolled my eyes.
A nice day for a lovely drama.
“What did you do to me?”
My eyes dropped, in a stunned way. She had to be kidding me. “Nothing. I saved your life.”
“Yeah, right. You touched me. I saw the way you looked at me. You were…”
Her finger pointed at me while I reached for the room's phone. With one hand rubbing one cheek, I spoke into the receiver. “Bring her breakfast.”
The tray arrived and I sat on the edge of the bed, careful not to spill the porridge. I took a spoonful, holding it out to her.
She turned her head like a spoiled child. “I can feed myself.”
Her hot tone has me fighting a chuckle. “I can see that.”
“Then…”
“Your dominant hand is tapped to the IV. And I'm not in the mood. Open up.”
Her lips remained shut. I held back the urge to speak back. Can she be more reasonable?
I waited, but she snatched the spoon, spilling the porridge on the white sheet.
I picked the spoon back and dug into the porridge bowl, stretching it to her. My eyes warning, if not begging subtly for her to not mess with me.
I ignored it, enduring the death glare she shot me. “I'm not hungry,” she hissed.
Her stomach grumbled and I gave a quick nod. She didn't reject it this time, her mouth opened and she took a bite. Her tongue played with the spoon end as she swallowed.
I kept feeding her until the plate was empty.
I set it aside, rolled up my sleeves, and asked. “Do you talk to your wolf?”
“What?”
“You're not that dead, Nova.”
She brushed her fingers on the bed. “Everyday.”
I wasn't done. “Have you ever shifted before?”
She choked on her water and spilled on her top. Her jaw locked as she answered. “Of course.”
“Doesn't seem like it.” I relaxed on my seat. “How was it?”
Her eyes became lost. She stuttered. “I…uhm…in the woods.”
“Hmm. What woods?”
Her pulse fluttered nervously at her throat. “Why are you asking so many questions?”
“Can't I?” I returned and she blinked. My body leaned in towards hers. “You're not lying, are you?”
“N…no. Why would I do that?”
I leaned back, crossed my arms and accessed her face. She was nervous. And I couldn't understand why? What was so bad in shifting that she would go that far?
“Last night…,” I began and she gulped. “It seemed like your first.”
She went dead quiet.
“You don't seem to have control over her. How long have you been drugging her into silence?” My tone went out flat.
She coughed, understanding I was pushing further. “I don't…”
“There's no point in lying. The maids found your pills crumpled under your uniform. I can tell what a suppressant looks like and I know what it's for.” I caught her glass before she let go. “Why do you use it?”
She shut down entirely after that, her gaze fixing on a blank patch of wall.
Tired, I rose, stepping toward the window. But I heard her, rustling the sheets.
She was digging at the tape holding the IV in her arm.
“Still thinking of running?” I asked, not bothering to turn around.
She flinched. “I just…needed to stretch.”
I faced her, leaning on the wall. “You don’t feel safe with me?”
“No.” She lifted her chin, throwing all her remaining energy into that single, defiant look.
“Oh,. You must feel safer with your father then?”
“Don't you dare say his name?”
I loved a good dare. I came forward, smiling and crouched down to her level, placing the glass on the table next to her bed.
She scrambled backwards to start until her shoulders hit the headboard. “Don't come any closer.”
I stopped, our faces almost touching. My gaze dropped to her lips. Then back to her eyes. I hadn't noticed it before. Her smooth skin, her perfectly lined eyebrows and eyelashes that danced beautifully when she blinked.
Her warm breath touched my cheek and her scent. I could stay like this forever.
“There's one more thing I need to know. Why does he want you so badly?” I pulled away.
“I'm his daughter.”
“What the f**k are you hiding?”
Her frown gave way to a wicked smile. My heart skipped. She inched closer, her eyes making a dangerous seductive stare as she bit her lower lip.
“Wanna find out?” She teased.
Her index finger pushed gently at my chest, my body moving until I was seated on the bed.
She sat on my lap. Her ass pushing down to my groin. I heaved in a breath, sucking down my spit while she wrapped her hand around my neck.
My confusion itched with my blood rushing down my legs. She didn't stay put, her ass straddling softly against my groin.
“What are you doing?” My eyebrows arched.
“Thanking you properly for saving me.”
Her left hand ran a line down my neck and I felt my body go hot. This wasn't…no. Think straight, Jax.
I couldn't. Her tongue licked her lips subtly and she pressed her lips to my ears. “I can be very nice if you want me to. Just say the word.”
My wolf roared, restless, greedy, demanding I claimed her. Each movement she made my heart beat faster.
Her wet lips touched my jaw, ghosting my skin with her breath.
Her hand went lower, skating over my abdomen, dancing dangerously close to the edge of my belt.
My grip tightened, my mind fighting the urge to take her.
I wanted to sink my teeth into that soft neck and…
“Don't you want your reward?” Her finger graced my pocket.
I caught her wrist. “Nice try, sweetheart.”
She dropped the deductible mask, pouting as she huffed. “I was exploring.”
Her face came closer and I almost lost it. Her breasts were touching me. My cheeks felt hot. I pictured everything annoying to hold my stern expression.
Her free hand dug into my hair, massaging, making me weak. “You like that don't you?”
I was lost. My will breaking when…
Buzz.
I pushed her off, took my phone and walked away from her. “What is it?”
“Boss, there’s an emergency.”
I turned my back to Nova, keeping my voice low. “Talk.”
“It's Nova. The Obsidian pack put a bounty on her.”
My fingers acted fast. I pulled the phone away and accessed the encrypted dark web network.
There it was. A passport picture of Nova on the top page. Her name was written in bold red letters.
The reward screamed. $2,000,000.
Underneath, the terrifying caveat were the words. “Wanted Alive.”
I put the phone back to my ear. “Double all guards and report to me if you notice anything. Send out some men and make sure no one knows where we are.”
I hung up and slipped the phone back into my pocket.
I turned around, Nova was sitting quietly on the bed, twirling a strand of dark hair around her finger.
My jaw tightened as I looked back at her. Over my dead body was anyone taking her from me.
