CHAPTER 3 The Job Offer

“Shut up Samantha what absurd you are thinking.”

I scold myself and silently followed the tall man, but my heart is beating at its fastest speed.

“Young miss this way, please.”

A tall man shows his hand towards a door. I realized it’s a private ward, it must be an injured person’s ward.

I was correct the injured man is sitting on the bed wearing a hospital gown, but his slightly wrinkled face is having a powerful aura.

“President Gilbert, she is the young miss who saved your life.”

They scared me to the core when I entered and saw the aged man’s face, but listening to the tall man’s words, I can release my stuck breath. They wouldn’t be so harsh to me because I save them.

Aged man, President Gilbert said nothing to the tall man and sway his hand, tall man bows his head respectfully and walked out of the ward closing its door.

Only me and president Gilbert left alone in the room.

My heart was thumping so fast, like wanting to jump out of the chest, and I already broke the record of my weirdest thoughts this time. I rubbed my sweaty palm to my long skirt and brushed off my thoughts.

“Please, have a seat.”

President Gilbert said in a thick solemn voice and shows his hand towards the chair beside his large hospital bed.

I rubbed both palms together and crawled towards the chair.

“Thanks, for saving my life.”

President Gilbert said, but this time his eyes are a little soft when he looked towards me.

As usual, I said nothing and stare at him in a daze. I am already introverted, but his powerful and solemn aura tongue-tied me further. I just relax that none of my weird thoughts all the way to this ward came true.

“This is yours.”

President Gilbert point towards the side table of his bed and I found my small pouch of a few thousand dollars and my precious chain and pendant.

I was out of the world with happiness, then I immediately jump from the chair, grabbed my pouch and chain, and clutch it near my heart. I felt like I got my breath back.

Don’t know what President Gilbert was thinking about me, and I don’t even care. He may be rich enough to win the entire world, but my entire world is my minor stuff.

“I am Dylan Gilbert, President of Gilbert industries, would you mind introduce yourself?”

Mr. Gilbert’s voice zoomed me out of my happy thoughts. I once again sat back on the chair because my legs were paining after walking the entire night.

“My name is Samantha Lockwood.”

“Good, miss Lockwood would you mind telling where are your parents and what were you doing at the secluded place all alone?”

My face turned pale at his question I can’t tell him where are my parents and family because I don’t know, I can’t even tell him that who am I and why I was at that secluded place, otherwise maybe he will send me back to my foster parents.

After thinking for a while, I came up with a lie.

“My parents are no more and few days before my foster parents also died. I have nobody.”

Either my foster parents live or die I don’t care, but my heartaches while lying about my parents, but I can see a line of sympathy appeared in President Gilbert’s eyes.

“I am sorry to hear about, but what you have decided to do for now?”

This is not a tough question, I can answer it easily.

“I will move to New Orleans and look for a job and resume my studies as well.”

“Miss Lockwood, you save my life, I owe you. Why do you want to take so much trouble? Just seize this opportunity and ask anything you wanted to ask, I have everything: property, money, wealth, I will give you anything, whatever you want.”

My eyes turned wide again, it’s the most shocking day of my life.

“President Gilbert is so generous but I want nothing for free, you returned my few precious things, that is enough and your life is priceless, please don’t look down on your life.”

I guess this is the longest line I have ever said, but I don’t care what he thinks about it, I just can’t make my genuine help for a sale.

“I think I should go first. Mr. Gilbert needs to take a rest.”

I was about to stand up, but Mr. Gilbert stopped me.

“Miss Lockwood I am impressed by your self-respect. Thus, I genuinely wanted to offer you a job.”

“Job?” His words made me confuse.

“Yes, you are looking for a job in New Orleans and I have my company’s major branch in New Orleans. You can work for my company and we can even accommodate our employees in the company’s dormitory. With this, you can resume your studies. This job is not because I owe you anything but because I like your sincerity and honesty.”

I was in a daze for many minutes. Is it real or am I dreaming? His voice brought me back to the world.

“Do you mind that?”

I wanted to deny it. My mom taught me that nobody gets anything without hard work, so we should always work hard and I was not sure about this sudden job offer, but after thinking for a while I concluded it must be the pay off my hard work since of many years when I worked like a machine and bear so much between my pack.

What’s more, I don’t need to depend on Ashley I can meet my friend with a raised chin.

“No, I want to accept your offer.” Words came out of my mouth in the greed of leaving the horrible life behind and getting a good life.

“That’s great, then let’s go to New Orleans with me.”

What? Is he going to take me to my destination with him?
