Chapter 1: The Bride He Never Wanted
The wedding dress felt heavier than it looked. Emily Carter stood motionless in front of the mirror, her fingers gripping the edge of the vanity so tightly her knuckles had turned white. The reflection staring back at her barely resembled the woman she knew. Her lips were pale, her eyes hollow, and the white gown clung to her body like a sentence already passed. This wasn’t how her day was supposed to begin. Her phone vibrated against the table. Once. Twice. She stared at the screen, dread creeping up her spine before she even read the message. Mom: Your sister is gone. Emily’s breath caught. Gone? Her hands shook as she typed back. Emily: What do you mean gone? The reply came almost instantly. Mom: She ran away. The wedding is in one hour. You have to replace her. The room spun. Emily pressed a hand to her chest, struggling to breathe. Replace her? As if this were a dress that could simply be switched at the last moment. Emily: I can’t. This isn’t my wedding. There was a long pause. Then one final message appeared. Mom: If you don’t go, our family is finished. Emily closed her eyes. She already knew what that meant. Debt collectors. Lawsuits. Her father’s business collapsing overnight. Everything they had spent their lives building—gone. All because her sister had chosen to run. And Emily… was being offered as the replacement. The church was filled by the time she arrived. Soft music echoed through the high ceiling, but it did nothing to calm the pounding of her heart. Every step she took down the aisle felt unreal, like she was walking inside someone else’s nightmare. Whispers followed her. “They say she’s not the original bride.” “Did she steal her sister’s place?” “How shameless…” Emily kept her head down, her nails digging into her palms. At the altar stood Alexander Blackwood. He was taller than she had imagined. Broad shoulders wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit. His presence alone silenced the room, as if the air itself knew better than to move around him. This was the man her sister had been meant to marry. A billionaire. A tycoon. A name that dominated headlines and boardrooms alike. And now… her husband-to-be. Alexander’s gaze lifted as she reached the front. The moment his eyes landed on her, the warmth in the room vanished. His jaw tightened. “This is not the woman I agreed to marry,” he said, his voice calm—but dangerously so. A ripple of unease spread through the guests. Emily swallowed. “I—” “My fiancée is blonde,” he continued, his eyes never leaving her face. “And she doesn’t look like she’s about to faint.” The words cut deep. “I’m sorry,” Emily whispered. “She couldn’t come.” A slow, mocking smile curved his lips. “So,” he said, leaning slightly closer, “they sent you instead.” His gaze swept over her from head to toe, cold and calculating. “How… resourceful.” Heat rushed to Emily’s face. “I didn’t plan this.” Alexander’s eyes darkened. “Do you take me for a fool?” Before she could respond, the music grew louder. The officiant cleared his throat. The ceremony had already begun. Emily’s heart sank. There was no escape now. She barely remembered the vows. The words floated past her ears, meaningless and hollow. Her mind was screaming, her body numb as Alexander took her hand. His touch was firm. Possessive. When the ring slid onto her finger, the weight of it shocked her more than the diamond itself. Married. Just like that. As the guests applauded, Alexander leaned down, his lips brushing dangerously close to her ear. “Don’t misunderstand,” he murmured. “This marriage means nothing to me.” Emily’s throat tightened. “This is a contract,” he continued coldly. “And you are nothing more than a substitute.” She forced herself to look up at him. His eyes were merciless. “If you think marrying me will change your life,” he added, “you’re mistaken.” Emily didn’t reply. She was afraid that if she did, her voice would betray her. The car ride to the Blackwood estate was silent. The city lights blurred past the window, but Emily couldn’t focus on anything except the tension filling the car. Alexander sat beside her, his presence overwhelming. “So,” he said at last, breaking the silence. “How much did they promise you?” Emily turned to him sharply. “I didn’t do this for money.” He let out a quiet laugh. “That’s what they all say.” She clenched her fists. “My sister ran away. I had no choice.” Alexander’s expression didn’t change. “There is always a choice,” he replied. “You chose to wear her dress.” Emily’s chest tightened. “If I didn’t, my family—” “I don’t care about your family,” he interrupted. “I care about one thing.” The car stopped. He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Do not expect love. Do not expect respect. And do not expect freedom.” Emily’s heart pounded violently. “This marriage exists for one reason only,” Alexander said. “To serve my interests.” The door opened. The Blackwood estate loomed before them—grand, cold, and unforgiving. A prison disguised as a palace. Inside the master bedroom, Emily stood frozen near the door. Alexander removed his jacket, his movements unhurried. “You’ll stay in this room,” he said. “And you’ll follow my rules.” “What are your rules?” Emily asked quietly. He turned to face her. “You don’t speak to the media.” “You don’t interfere in my business.” “And you don’t fall in love.” Her lips trembled. “And you?” A flicker of surprise crossed his face. Then his smile returned—sharp and cruel. “I do whatever I want.” Emily felt something crack inside her. She had been quiet all day. Obedient. Silent. But she was tired. “This marriage might mean nothing to you,” she said softly, “but it means everything I lost.” Alexander stepped closer, towering over her. “You lost nothing,” he said. “You gained a life others would kill for.” Emily lifted her chin, meeting his gaze. “Then why do you look so angry,” she asked, “now that you have me?” For the first time, Alexander didn’t answer immediately. His eyes darkened. “Careful,” he warned. “You are testing my patience.” Emily’s hands shook—but she didn’t look away. “Then maybe,” she whispered, “you shouldn’t have married the woman you hate.” Silence filled the room. Alexander’s jaw clenched. Slowly, deliberately, he reached out and closed the distance between them. “You’re right,” he said coldly. “I didn’t want you.” He leaned down, his voice a breath away from her lips. “And that,” he added, “is exactly why you will regret becoming my wife.”
