[Earl]
Saturday morning meant no classes. And no classes meant a day for resting and taking things a little more slowly. I grunted and rolled to the side after hearing the chirping of the birds outside my window. Slowly opening my eyes and adjusting to the brightness, I looked at the side of my bed to see if Matthias was still there.
I rubbed my forehead after seeing that no one was inside my room. Where’s Matthias? Did he left already? Hmmmm.
I stood up from my bed to walk towards my desk. I noticed a note peeking out underneath my favourite book. I pulled it out to see what it was.
Downtown mall @ 1p.m. -M
I raised my brows in confusion. Why would Matthias want to meet me at the mall?
Nevertheless, I did what he said on the note, not even bothering to know why. It’s not like he’s going to kidnap me and sell me to the black market, right?
I paled. I certainly hope he wouldn’t do that.
I stopped in front of the mall while looking around to see if Matthias was already here. But all I can see were people busy with their own lives, enjoying their time with their family and friends.
I straightened my plain navy blue shirt. I walked inside the mall, casually looking at the shops.
“You’re late.”
I jolted when Matthias suddenly talked behind me. I quickly turned around to look at him. “M-Matthias!”
He was wearing a black leather jacket with a white shirt underneath and matching black pants and Converse shoes. “I said meet me here at 1. It’s 1:10.”
I puffed my cheeks at him. “I’m not sure where to meet you and besides, I came here at exactly 1.”
Matthias stopped glaring at me. “Forget it.” He walked past me and I followed him.
“Why did you want to meet here anyway?” I asked while we were walking. I noticed some girls walking past us were secretly glancing at Matthias but he was just ignoring them.
“Because I want to.” He smugly answered.
I frowned. Typical Matthias. Oh well, I came here in my own accord so it wasn’t his entire fault.
Matthias stood in front of an electronic store. I dumbly stared at him when he entered the store. “Are you planning on buying a new gadget?”
He ignored me and just kept walking inside. Some of the saleslady roaming around the store looked at him but as usual, he was unaware of their gazes. I lowered my head, feeling a little bit intimidated because I’m walking beside a guy who was screaming attention.
“Pick.”
I looked up to see Matthias standing beside the rack where a bunch of Blackberry phones were displayed. I eyed him questioningly. “What?”
He suddenly looked pissed and I cowered in fear. “I said pick a phone.”
I scratched the back of my head while walking towards the display table. Why’s he going to buy a new phone? Did he break it or something?
“Are you looking for something in particular?” The saleslady asked as she approached me. She was wearing a courteous smile while leaning towards me.
“Err I - ” I forced out a grin. I didn’t really know what I’m looking for exactly.
I thought for a moment. Matthias wanted a new phone and he’s giving me the freedom of choosing it for him. I rubbed my chin while browsing the display of phones. They all looked similar so it’s really hard to pick what the best phone model was.
“Hmmmm.” I’m guessing Matthias’ liked the black-themed phone. “This one.”
The saleslady took the phone out of its rack to let me see it. “Good choice Sir, this phone model has a unique design of - ” She was suddenly brushed off when Matthias picked the phone out of her hand.
He inspected the phone before giving it back to the woman. “I’ll take it.” He said while walking away from us.
The saleslady and I just stared at him in disbelief. “Wow. Is he your friend?” The look on her eyes was enough for me to assume that she’s probably amazed at how cool Matthias was.
“Kind of.” I answered.
“Do you think he’s taken?” The woman asked while grinning.
I shook my head in reply. “I’m not sure though.” A sudden pang on my chest made me scowl. “Thanks for everything.”
The sun was already setting when Matthias and I decided to go home. We spent a lot of time looking around the mall, eating deserts such as cakes, ice creams and pastries. I was kind of worried that a schoolmate of ours might see us hanging out together. I didn’t want to tarnish Matthias’ reputation at school so I kept an eye out to see if we knew anyone hanging out at the same place as us but thank God no one was.
I really wasn’t expecting it but I had a good time with Matthias. I was always scared that he might snap at me and get angry but he didn’t. He was just casually walking around with me at a mall like it’s the most natural thing for us to do together. The time that we spent together made me realized how different Matthias was when we’re at school. I knew him for being impetuous, arrogant and rude but he’s really not all that. Yes, he’s still got the attitude but just like me, he’s quiet and observant. He had the humour and I didn’t feel uncomfortable talking to him.
It’s like I’ve known him for so long.
Matthias unlocked the car door and we entered his vehicle so that we could finally go home. While driving back, I couldn’t help but to stare at Matthias. Even in side view, I could still see how good looking he really was.
“What?” He noticed that I was ogling and I flushed in embarrassment.
“S-sorry. That was rude.” I mumbled as I looked down on my lap.
Matthias snorted but didn’t say anything. I looked out the window to watch the view of the city in a fast blur. I found it odd that I was enjoying listening to the metal song that was blaring from the stereo.
“So you like this kind of music?” I said at Matthias and he shrugged his shoulders.
“You could change it if you want.”
I smiled. “No. It’s fine.”
Twenty minutes or so, we finally arrived in front of my house.
“Thanks for everything.” I said while flashing him a sincere smile. “I had a lot of fun.”
He wasn’t looking at me and was just leaning towards the steering wheel. “Yeah.”
“I’ll be going now. See you.” I waved a hand at him before unlocking the door but I was stopped when he grabbed my shoulder. I turned to look at him. “What is it?”
“Here.” He handed me the paper bag that contained the phone he bought this afternoon.
“Huh?” I stared at him.
“I bought it for you.” He said while looking away. He pushed the bag to me but I shook my head to decline it.
“I don’t think I can have this. It’s too much Matthias.” I said but he glared at me.
“Just take it.” He said through his gritted teeth and I gulped.
I reluctantly took the paper bag. “I’ll pay you as soon as I can.”
Matthias’ rolled his eyes on me. “Are you insulting me? Do you really think I need your god damn money?” He sarcastically asked.
I paled. “I didn’t mean to insult you I just don’t think I deserve this gift I mean, it’s a phone. You don’t give phones just like that.” I reasoned out.
“Take it or else I’ll kiss the hell out of you.”
I flushed different shades of red. “I - ” I saw the stubborn look on his face. “Why did you suddenly buy me a phone, Matthias?”
“Do you really have to ask the obvious?” Matthias put his hand behind my neck to push me towards him. I felt his lips on mine and I almost pushed him away but he held my hands to stop me. He pulled away from me and when he saw that I was blushing, he smirked. “You should see your face.”
I didn’t need to look at the mirror to see how face my red was. The heat from my cheeks already told me how flushed I am right now.
“I - I’ll go now. Bye.”
Monday morning and my second class finally finished. It’s time for a quick break and I decided to eat my snack at the back of the school since I didn’t really want to go to the cafeteria.
Bullies were always there and their target was obviously me. Walking to the vacant, grassy lawn, I found a perfect spot to eat my food. I sat on the ground, leaned on the wall and took my sandwich and bottle of juice out of my bag.
I enjoyed looking at the sky while eating my food. This was my special spot every time I go to school because no one bothers me when I’m here.
I smiled to myself. Being here was relaxing.
My phone suddenly vibrated inside my pocket. I reached out to take it out.
A new message. I wondered who it was from.
From Matthias
Text me if you receive this message.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at what I just read. Even in a phone message, he’s still a push-over. Nevertheless, I quickly sent him a message saying that I got his message.
“Earl! You’re here as well?!” I gasped after hearing someone screamed my name. I saw Harry walking towards me and the first thing I noticed was that his hair was messy and his clothes were crumpled.
I narrowed my eyes at the sight of him. “Harry?”
Edward appeared behind him and I paled in fear. His hands were inside his pockets and he was casually smoking a cigarette while walking beside Harry.
I tilted my head while thinking. If I remember correctly, Harry told me he was close to Edward. It was actually the first time I saw the two of them together.
Harry stopped in front of me. “Hi! It’s been a while since I last saw you!”
I smiled at him. Actually we met three days ago but I stayed quiet.
I looked over at Edward and as usual, he was wearing a deadpan expression. It made me ask myself why the two of them were here. I looked around and saw no one but them.
Harry looked at my phone and scowled. “You got a new phone?” He asked and I nodded to answer. “Who gave it to you?” He continued to ask.
“Matthias gave it to me.” I truthfully answered.
Edward and Harry looked at each other. “That bastard gave you a phone?” Edward asked in disbelief.
I slowly nodded. “Yeah. Why?” Was it weird that Matthias gave me a phone?
Harry crossed his arms. “Well that’s new. Matthias never gives anything to anyone. Not with his girlfriends or even me.”
I tried to hide my scowl after hearing him say ‘his girlfriends’.
Edward glared at Harry. “And why do you think he’ll give you something, idiot.”
“He’s my best friend! He’s supposed to give me something once in a while!” He said while pouting but Edward just rolled his eyes on him.
“Yeah right, keep dreaming.”
I stared at the two of them and somehow, I can tell how close they really were. They have a kind of vibe where it’s like they knew each other for a really long time already.
“What’re you two bastards doing here?” I heard Matthias’ voice and when I turned to face the side, I saw him appear in the corner. He walked towards us and I can see him glare at Edward.
Harry suddenly lost the color on his cheeks when he saw Matthias arrived. “Matthias?!” He nervously called out his name.
“I asked you a question. What are you doing here? With him?” He c****d his head to where Edward was standing but my brother just ignored his deadly glares.
“Nothing much.” Harry patted Matthias’ shoulders to ease the tension that was building up. “I heard you gave lil’ Earl something.”
Matthias slapped Harry’s hands away from him. “That’s none of your business.”
He gave Edward a one last glare before looking at me. “What’re you doing here?”
I showed him the sandwich I was munching. “Eating.”
Matthias turned his attention back at Harry. “If I see you together again, I’ll f*****g slit your throat.” He threatened. Harry quickly waved his hands to dismiss whatever Matthias was accusing him.
“I know, I know! Geez!” He stomped away from us but Edward remained standing in front of us.
Matthias raised a brow at him. “What’re you waiting for?”
My brother just stared at him before shrugging his shoulders and walking away as well.
With them gone, Matthias and I were finally alone.
“Do you want some?” I asked Matthias who sat beside me. He looked at me before taking a bite at the sandwich I was holding.
He quietly chewed it. “Did you make this?” He asked while wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
I nodded in reply.
“Hmm cool.” He shortly said and I just smiled.
I watched Matthias put his arms behind the back of his head as he looked up the sky. I silently wondered how he knew I was here.
“Do you have work after class?”
I rubbed my nose and nodded again. “Yes, why?”
“I’ll pick you up.”
I stared at him with wide eyes. “Excuse me?”
“I said I’ll pick you up.” He repeated and this time, his voice was tinted with irritation.
I quickly shook my head to reject his offer. “No!” An image of me wearing the female uniform at work flashed in my mind. “No. You can’t. I won’t let you. You’re not allowed to.”
Matthias angrily creased his brows at me. “Why?”
“B-because...” I stammered. “...I’m working overtime tonight, until 12 o’clock. You can’t pick me up at that time.” My reasoning suddenly became ridiculous that Matthias looked at me with doubtful eyes.
“You close at 8 pm.” He sarcastically said.
I gulped. Quick Earl, think of a reason to get out of this. Just thinking of Matthias seeing the skirt I wore at work made me really cold. I’m sure it’ll be the death of me if that happens. “T-the boss asked me to stay late tonight because we’re setting up this new theme for the restaurant.”
Matthias raised a brow. “A new theme?”
“Yes.” I nervously gulped.
Please don’t see through my lie.
Matthias observed my face one last time before shrugging his shoulders. “Fine.”
I mentally sighed. I definitely dodged that bullet.
Work just finished and Mr. Lee finally gave us our salary for this month. Everyone was obviously happy to get their pay and while they were having their little conversation (we already closed up shop and everyone was gathered at the reception), I decided to enter the staff room to get change. I was tired and I really wanted to go home already and sleep.
“A lot of customers have been coming in.” Adam surprised me for speaking behind me. I didn’t even hear him enter the room.
I lazily took the maid uniform off of me. “Maybe because it’s amusing to see guys wearing skirts while serving the customers.” I quietly said after putting my regular clothes on. I turned to look at Adam and he was just staring at me. “Is something wrong?”
He snapped out of his thoughts. “N-nothing.” He rubbed his nose before walking to his cabinet to get change.
I stood in front of the mirror to observe myself. Without my glasses, my eyes looked really tired and sleepy. I rubbed my face in exhaustion. “I’ll be going now. See you tomorrow.” I said to Adam while putting my glasses on.
I waited for Adam to look at me but he didn’t. “Okay. See you.”
I patiently waited for the last bus to arrive at the terminal. There were a couple of people walking on the sidewalks but every time I focus my attention on them, my sight would just blur out. I rubbed it a couple of times, thinking that it was just fatigue doing that.
I sighed. Because of my hectic schedule, I haven’t had the chance to visit the optometrist. My eyesight’s getting much worse than it already was and it’s honestly giving me a lot of trouble.
DING!
I heard the message notification of my phone. I fished it out of my bag to see who it was who sent me a message.
From Unknown number
HELLO Earl! I stole your number from Matthias’ phone. But don’t tell him that! -Harry
I silently asked myself why Harry took my number from Matthias. Did he need me for anything?
DING!
An incoming message appeared on the screen I pressed the button to read the new message.
From Matthias
If something happens, call me immediately. Don’t go home alone.
I creased my brows after reading. Matthias sounded like he’s expecting something bad will happen to me. With the strings of murder happening around this area, you couldn’t really blame yourself if you get paranoid.
I unconsciously looked around the place and saw nothing but the usual things I always see at night. I shook my head to brush the thought away, thinking that I’m just being ridiculous. The serial killer wouldn’t go after me, right? His modus operandi involved young women and I’m pretty sure I’m not one of them.
I was shaken up from my thoughts when the phone suddenly rang. I quickly answered it after seeing that it was Matthias who was calling.
“Hello?”
“Where are you?” I didn’t know why but my heart skipped a beat after hearing his voice over the phone. It sounded so manly and well...attractive.
“I’m at the terminal.” I shortly answered while calming myself. It’s just a phone call, Earl. It’s not a big deal.
“You said you’ll be out at 12. It’s only 9.”
I nervously gulped. I forgot about that. “W-well my boss changed his mind. He told us that we can go home early tonight.”
Matthias sighed. “I’ll pick you up. Wait there.”
I flushed at what he just said. “P-pick me up?”
Why was he so persistent on picking me up from work? I’m pretty sure I’m capable of going home alone.
Matthias snorted. “That block isn’t really that safe, you i***t. And knowing how much of a blockhead you are, it’ll be much safer if I pick you up.”
I scowled. It’s the first time someone actually called me a blockhead. “Okay. I’ll wait for you here.”
“No. Wait for me inside the nearest convenience store.”
He suddenly hung up the phone, leaving me confused.
While walking to the nearest convenience store, I noticed a couple who was walking the opposite direction to where I was. The man was probably around six feet tall and his arm was wrapped around the girl’s shoulder. I narrowed my eyes after realizing that the man seemed to be a little old to be dating the girl but who am I to judge. They were a little bit far from where I was but when they passed me, I saw the girl briefly looking at me with a frightened expression. Even though it was dark, I could see fear etched on her face. Her lips were pale, her eyes were hazed and I could see she that was trembling under the heavy trench coat that she was wearing.
The man gave me a nasty glare and I quickly lowered my head to avoid his stare. When they were a few feet away from me, I looked back again. I saw the girl was almost dragging her feet just to keep on walking while the guy beside her kept her close to his body.
There’s something wrong but I couldn’t put my finger on it. The threats and warnings of the people around me started echoing inside my head.
“They say there’s a serial killer roaming around this street and he’s targeting young teenage girls.”
“Yeah, be careful out there. I heard there’s a killer on the loose.”
I clenched my fist. Even if I chase them, I’m sure I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t have the strength to protect the girl.
I bit my lips. I didn’t have the time to debate with myself. Every second I stay here might be the end of that girl’s life.
I nodded to myself.
I followed the two of them inside a run-down apartment complex. I am so getting busted for what I was doing but I couldn’t stop. I just needed to make sure that the girl will be alright.
The two of them stopped in front of a wooden door. From where I was standing (I was hiding behind a pillar, a few inches away from where they were), I could see the girl was about to pass out. The man saw it and he immediately slapped her repeatedly on the cheek. I could hear the girl whimpering but she was too weak to even fight back.
“P-please...” I jolted after hearing her meek voice. “...someone...help me...”
I furrowed my brows and I could feel my whole body becoming numb in fear and anxiety. I quickly fished my phone out of my pocket to dial Matthias’ number. But I suddenly thought that it would be too dangerous if I call him since the man could hear my voice.
With shaking fingers, I sent Matthias a text message.
To Matthias
Pls help me. Im @ apartment complex rundown
Serial killer hes here.
Help.
I was too busy texting that I didn’t even notice the man already standing in front of me. I slowly looked up as his shadow loomed over me.
“Now what do we have here.” He evilly smirked at me and at that moment, I found myself unable to move.
I tried stepping back but I felt a sharp pain on my face. My sight became blurry and everything turned upside down.
I tried fighting back but the man was obviously stronger than I was. He gave me another hard punch on the abdomen and I coughed in pain. “Ack!”
The man was silent but the smirk on his face never left. He grabbed a fistful of my hair and forced me to stand up.
I inwardly shuddered after seeing the sadistic gleam on his eyes.
“We’re...going...to...have...so...much...fun.”
“Mmmmph!! Mmmppph!!!”
A muffled scream immediately woke me up. I still couldn’t see clearly but I could see a person standing in front of a table.
I blinked a couple of times to regain focus on my eyes and when I did, I was struck in horror after seeing what was happening in front of me.
The floor was covered in blood and the stench of a body decomposing greeted my nose. I resisted the urge to throw up.
The man didn’t notice that I was already awake. I tried moving only to realize that my hands and feet were bound with ropes. “H-hey!!” I called out to gain his attention but he was too busy cutting the girl that was lying on top of the table.
“Mmmmph!!”
My eyes widened in shock and disgust as the man stabbed the girl straight on the leg. Blood spurted out of her skin and her muffled screams echoed throughout the dim-lighted room.
The man delightfully whistled. His eyes were concentrating on the face of the girl who was close to being dead. “My...sweet...lady...” He lifted his knife to lick the blood off. “...don’t...die...”
He stabbed her other leg and the girl gave another muffled scream. She was thrashing against the rope that was tied around her hands and feet. “Mmmph!! Mmmmph...!”
My whole body was shaking. I didn’t even know what I’m feeling anymore. Fear, disgust, anxiety? No, it’s more than that.
Something as gruesome as this happening in front of me was making my stomach churn in repulsion. My mind was blank and I didn’t know what to do anymore. Should I scream for help? Should I try to unleash myself from these ropes? All the things popping inside my head were all useless solutions.
I was stopped from my monologue when I saw the girl’s head slumping on the side of the table. Her eyes were just staring at me and I was frozen from where I was sitting. Tears streamed down her from her lifeless eyes.
She doesn’t deserve this. No one deserved this. Why was he doing this? Why? There must be some reason - for this man to torture these girls.
“Please stop it!!!”
The man froze, finally hearing my voice for the first time. He looked down on me and I saw the corner of his eyes twitched. “What...did...you...say?”
I looked up to see him and this time I tried my best to look straight into his eyes. “I - I don’t know what happened...but I’m here to listen to you...”
What the hell am I saying? Why am I reasoning with a mad man? It’s obvious he wouldn’t listen to me. I’ll just aggravate him and he’ll end up killing me and the girl together.
“Why...” I nervously gulped and I could feel how terrified I am. “...why are you doing this?”
“Shut...up...” The man said through his gritted teeth but I ignored him.
“There must be a reason...right? These people...don’t deserve what you’re doing...”
“Shut...up...!”
“Don’t do this...please...just let us go...”
“SHUT...UP!!!!!”
The man pushed the table away, causing the objects in the cabinet next to it topple down on the floor. Glasses, plates, utensils and jars broke into tiny pieces as the man charged towards me.
He threw me down on the floor before straddling me. His face was warped in frenzy and I could only look at him in pity.
“YOU...DON’T...KNOW...ANYTHING...ABOUT...ME!!!” He lifted the knife to stab me on the arm but the blade only grazed my skin since he was twitching too much, it was like he’s having a seizure. The sting made me winced in pain.
I mentally scolded myself. Damn it. Damn it!
The man lifted the knife again, this time, with two hands. “I’LL...KILL...YOU!!!!!”
It was as if time stopped as I watched the man plunge the knife straight into my heart. I looked to the side the see the girl, still lying on the table.
I closed my eyes in defeat. I’m sorry.
I waited for the pain to greet me but nothing happened.
“You f*****g asshole.”
I slowly opened my eyes and I saw a figure standing behind the man.
Matthias...?
I watched in disbelief as the man got thrown away, his body rolling on the floor before hitting the wall.
“...what...?”
I finally saw Matthias and for a brief moment, I wanted to cry. Seeing his face in a situation like this was like a miracle in happening. “M-Matthias...” I called out his name but I scowled when I saw his expression.
He was fuming. He was fuming in anger. His eyes were almost like a beast and it was like he was restraining himself from tearing the man apart. He gritted his teeth while walking towards the man who was now struggling to stand up.
“Who...the...hell...are...you?!!!”
“No need to know it. You’re gonna die anyway.” Matthias’ voice dripped with the intention to kill.
“How...dare...you...you... punk!! I’m...going...to...kill...you...first...before...killing...that...kid!!” He took out his knife again and pointed it at Matthias who was just standing in front of him with arrogance.
Matthias’ shoulders twitched. “Kill me? A guy like you is going to kill someone like me?” He gave out a low chuckle and it was horrifying to see this side of Matthias.
The man growled in anger. “FUCK...YOU!!!” The man got up, running to attack Matthias.
I stood up in reflex when I saw the man charging towards Matthias. He’s unarmed! There’s nothing he could do to someone who had a weapon.
I froze and gasped at the same time as I watched Matthias dodging every attack. From the looks of it, it was like he was just playing around with a kid.
I could hear Matthias laughing sarcastically. “You seriously think you can kill me with those moves, old man?” Matthias taunted.
The man gave another low growl and attacked Matthias once again. “You...shitty...BRAT!!!”
Matthias glared at the man and as soon as he got closer to him, Matthias lifted his right leg to kick his hand making him drop his weapon to the ground.
“Aaaargh!!” I saw the man clutch his bleeding hand.
“How’s the pain? Does it feel good?” Matthias asked sarcastically.
“You’ll...pay...for...this!!!” The man threatened but he remained unfazed.
I was frozen stiff when I saw Matthias pulling out a silver gun from under his coat. The man saw this as well and he started to tremble in fear. “W-w-why...do...you...have...a...gun?!!” The man frantically asked as he lifted an accusatory finger at Matthias.
Matthias only snorted at him. “What a dumbass.” He raised the gun mid-air, directly pointing it at the man who dropped down on the floor, defeated and scared at the same time. “To kill you of course.”
Watching Matthias like this - holding a gun, threatening a person, I couldn’t help but to feel scared. “M-Matthias...please...” I called him but he ignored me.
Matthias pulled the trigger and the man shook his head, practically begging for Matthias to stop. “I won’t forgive you for putting that wound on him.”
I innocently blinked at what he said. I unconsciously held my wounded arm and I could feel the blood on my hand.
Matthias stepped closer to the man, the gun dangerously pointed at his forehead. The man stumbled in fear and tried to crawl away from Matthias. “P-please...no!!!”
I didn’t know what possessed me to do it but I instinctively moved towards Matthias to stop him from shooting the guy. I ran towards him and I wrapped my arms around his waist. “NO!!! Don’t do it, Matthias!”
Matthias clicked his tongue in irritation. “Get off of me. I’m gonna kill this bastard.” He muttered under his breath but I didn’t move. “EARL! GET OFF OF ME!”
“NO!! Don’t kill him, please Matthias!” I raised my head to look at him. Tears were streaming down my face. “I - I don’t want you to kill him...not you...you’re not...”
What am I saying? Matthias was a killer. He’s an assassin. Doing something like this was normal for him. But...but deep inside my mind, I couldn’t bear to watch him kill a person.
I felt his body froze for a second. “f**k!” He dropped his arm on the side of his body and heaved a sigh.
I saw Matthias’ hand tightened around the steering wheel. “I should have killed him.” He angrily grumbled.
I gave him a worried look. “Don’t worry about it. We gave him to the police. They’ll know what to do, right?” I tried to reason out.
He didn’t answer me so I decided to be quiet knowing that talking to him more will only worsen his already bad mood.
I looked on my arm which was now wrapped with a handkerchief that Matthias gave me to stop the wound from bleeding. Although it stopped, I could still feel the sting and it was really hurting a lot.
He finally parked the car in front of a dark abandoned building. The sight of this place made me shudder. I could tell that this place was a dangerous place, no doubt about that.
Matthias turned the engine off and I looked back on him to ask him where we were. He didn’t answer me, yet again. He just climbed out of the vehicle, slamming the door as hard as he could.
I bit my lips. He’s angry. I knew it, he’s definitely angry.
I took the seatbelt off and went out of the car as well. Matthias was already walking towards the entrance and I ran after him.
“It’s one of our hideouts.” He answered while we were walking inside the building. The first thing I noticed when we got inside was the huge graffiti painting of a red dragon on each walls of the lobby.
“He’s the leader of a gang called the Red Dragon. I don’t know much but his gang is being protected by the American mafia.”
I briefly remembered what Edward said. So this was one of their HQ’s or something.
I looked around only to see a few couches and chairs scattered on the room. For an abandoned building, this doesn’t look bad at all. In fact, the place was cosy...which was weird because it’s one of the lairs of the Mafia. It’s supposed to be scary and creepy.
Matthias proceeded to walk to the elevator and I trotted behind him. We arrived at the top floor and when we exited the elevator, two big men were standing near a pillar, talking loud while laughing as well.
I gulped when I saw them. They looked intimidating.
One of the guys glanced at our direction and his face turned serious after seeing Matthias. “It’s rare for boss to come here.” The guy with the blonde hair said. When he saw me, he creased his brows.
I stepped back and lowered my head to avoid their sardonic stares.
“Fetch me the first-aid kit.” Matthias ordered while walking straight to the end of the corridor. The two guys nodded and went off to get what Matthias wanted.
When we reached the end of the hallway, Matthias grabbed my wrist. “Come here.” He said and I blushed when he suddenly pushed me close to him. We stopped in front of a glass door and Matthias kicked it open.
I couldn’t see anything inside since it was too dark. All of a sudden, the lights turned on and I gawked in amazement after seeing the view.
Tall windows adored the walls and it gave us the perfect view of the night sky. I marvelled at the sight of the skyscrapers surrounding us. I stood in the middle of the room, jaws hanging in awe.
It was my first time to see something like this and it was really fascinating. “This is beautiful.”
Matthias walked towards me and I watched him take my jacket off. My eyes widened when he leaned towards my face. “Sit on the sofa and I’ll treat your wound.” He whispered.
I nodded at him. “Okay.” I walked towards the leather sofa that was placed at the right side of the room. I looked around the room and saw that it was a modern office, with a desk in the middle, bookshelves at the sides, carpet on the floor and a lot of gadgets that were messily scattered on the desks and end tables.
“Is this your office?” I asked Matthias who was taking his coat off. He threw it on top of the sofa before walking towards me. “Yeah.” I creased my brows after seeing the gun holster on each of his shoulders. “T-thanks for saving me back there.”
He sat down on the opposite couch. “Whatever.”
I looked down on my hands, remembering the face of the poor girl back there. I didn’t know what happened to her after we brought her to the hospital. Matthias checked her pulse and said that she’s still alive but she was too weak to even breathe. Besides, the wounds that she got were way worse than what I got. That insane man almost hack her legs off but thank God it didn’t happen.
I tried to stop myself from crying. That experience was too traumatic. I could still hear her screams every time I close my eyes. That stare she gave me kept on flashing back in my mind.
“What’s wrong?” Matthias finally asked.
I shook my head. “Nothing. It’s nothing.”
He stood up to walk towards me. “Does it hurt?” He kneeled in front of me.
“I was just...scared...” I couldn’t hold it anymore and I finally sobbed in front of him. “...I...I couldn’t do anything for that girl...she was...” I wiped my tears with the back of my hand. “...I was so scared...Matthias...”
Matthias pulled my hand. “I’m sorry.”
I stiffened at what he said. “W-what? Why are you apologizing?”
“I should have been there.” He tightened his hold on me.
“It’s not your fault Matthias...I...”
I stopped talking after I heard one of the guys shouting behind the door. “Boss! The first-aid kit is here!”
Matthias stood up to get the kit and after talking for a while, he returned in front of me.
“Hold out your arm.” He said. I did what he told me and I watched him spray the antiseptic on my wound.
I hissed. The wound was throbbing and it felt like it was burning.
Matthias continued spraying it. “Does it hurt that bad?”
“Not really.” I pulled a force smile, afraid that he could tell that I was lying.
“Liar.” Matthias snapped and I blinked at him.
“Pardon?”
“You have a habit of looking to the right when you say things that are bothering you.” He informed and I was stunned at what he just said.
My heart pounded a little bit faster. “H-how did you...?” How could he tell things like that? Was it because he’s always looking at me, watching my every moves? “I - I’m not lying.” I looked away from him while pulling my arm back.
Matthias smirked in satisfactory. “You just did it again.”
I pouted at him and decided to just shut my mouth. If I continued to deny it, he’ll just tease me again until I admit it to myself.
After cleaning the wound, he put the bandage around my arm. I watched him and thought to myself that maybe he have done this a lot of times considering that he was an assassin. Getting wounded like this was probably not new to him anymore.
“Finished.” He declared as he securely tied the knot on my arm.
I sighed in relief. It still stings, but not that much.
Matthias put the box down and glanced back at me. I gulped and looked at the other direction. I didn’t know why but I couldn’t look at him for more than three seconds!
“Why’re you looking away?” He asked while leaning towards me.
“No reason!” I answered while trying to cover my face.
Matthias held my wrist and I unconsciously looked at him. I gasped after he pecked me on the lips. I felt my cheeks flushed at what he just did. “W-why do you keep doing those things?”
Matthias shrugged his shoulders. “Because I want to.” He arrogantly answered and I just stared at him, dumbfounded.
“Give me a good reason. You should do these things to your girlfriend.” I said with shaking voice.
He only stared at me while wearing a teasing smirk. “Do you want me to have a girlfriend?”
I felt my heart throb in pain. I furrowed my brows while clenching my fist. “No!” I snapped and I was surprised at my reaction.
Matthias knowingly smiled. “And why’s that?” He leaned closer to nibble my lower lip and I moaned in response.
“B-because - ” I reached out to hold his shoulders to support myself as he planted small kisses on my nape. I closed my eyes, enjoying the feeling of his lips on my skin. ” - I don’t think I can bear...seeing you with another girl.”
He silently chuckled while brushing his lips against mine. “Why?” I opened my eyes only to see Matthias looking straight to me. “Why don’t you want me to have a girlfriend, Earl?”
The moment he asked me that, I just felt my heart clenching in pain. The thought of Matthias having a girlfriend terrified me. “I - I don’t know Matthias.”
His hands cupped my cheeks. “I know you know, Earl. Tell me.” He rested his forehead on mine and I could feel his warm breath on me.
Deep down, I probably knew why I didn’t want him to have a girlfriend. I’m probably attracted to Matthias. And I’m probably in love with him.
I inhaled before staring straight into Matthias’ brown eyes. The look on his face was like he was expecting something big, hoping for something big.
“Matthias...I...” I nervously gulped. Did I have the courage to say it out loud? I shook my head, throwing all negativity away. I didn’t want to spoil this opportunity to tell Matthias what I’m feeling for him already. I wanted him to know.
Because somewhere, inside me, was hoping that he was also in love with me.
My breathing was uneven and my heard began to beat faster than normal.
“Matthias I really...really...really...lo - ”
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
Our little moment was interrupted for the second time making Matthias pull away from me. He rubbed the back of his head in irritation. “f**k!!”
“BOSS!” The knocking continued. “There’s an emergency down at one of the bars we own!!”
Matthias growled and I gasped when he suddenly threw the first-aid kit at the door. “f*****g BASTARD!!! I’M GONNA KILL YOU RIGHT NOW!!!” He charged towards the door and swung it open as he started beating the hell out of his men who interrupted us.
The door slammed close and I was left there alone. I could hear the wails of pain behind the door and I was kind of worried that Matthias will kill his people. I hope he wouldn’t do that though but knowing him, he probably will.
A few minutes later, Matthias finally returned. I paled when I saw his hands covered in blood. I watched him wipe the blood with the towel that was hanging from the chair. “f*****g morons.” He hissed in anger.
“Is everything alright?”
Matthias ignored me and just went to the table to get his phone. He walked near the windows while dialling a number. He started talking to the phone and I patiently waited for him to finish.
He ended the call, putting his phone inside his pocket. “I have to go now. Someone just started a fight in one of the bars I own and for some f*****g reason the fucker I put there to manage is nowhere to be seen.”
I nodded. “Okay. I understand.” I stood up to grab my bag. “Sorry for the trouble, Matthias.” I curtly smiled at him. “And thank you for treating my wound.”
Matthias smiled before walking towards me. I stayed on my ground, watching his every move until he stopped a feet away from me. He carefully raised my arm, looking straight into my eyes. His stare was captivating, I couldn’t look away.
“Whatever you were gonna say a while ago, I feel the same way as well.” He whispered and I felt my heart skipped a couple of beats.
I was just frozen from where I was. I couldn’t believe what Matthias just said that. I looked at his face to find an answer but he just masked his expression with a smirk. “I’ll drop you on your place. Let’s go.” He patted my head while walking out of his office.
I touched my head, still feeling his hand on me. Matthias, does it mean that you also love me?
I smiled to myself.
If that’s true, I could die happy now.
I arrived at our house around 12:55 a.m. I scampered for my keys to open the door. I entered the house and was about to turn the lights on but I stopped after hearing voices coming from the kitchen. I quietly walked towards the room, peaking on the door only to see Edward and Harry standing near the counter.
I covered my mouth to stop myself from uttering any sound.
Why was Harry here? What’s he doing in our house?
“You i***t. I told you never to come here in my house, didn’t I?” I heard Edward scolding Harry but he ignored my brother and just opened the fridge to take out a can of soda.
“Stop being so stingy.” He nudged the door of the fridge with his knee to close it. “Matthias doesn’t know I’m here so there’s no need to worry.” He muttered while opening the can.
Edward glared at him before rolling his eyes on him. “f*****g moron.” He cursed as he took out a pack of cigarette inside his pocket. I grimaced when I watched my brother light it up.
Harry stepped away from him and I saw a disgusted look on his face. “Hey! You promised me not to smoke when I’m around.”
“You’re stressing me out. Just let me do this to calm down.” Edward reasoned while blowing the smoke of the cigarette away from Harry.
I was disappointed to see Edward smoking again. I thought he stopped already but here he was, smoking inside our house.
“I’m going out. Leave as soon as you finish that.” Edward said while pointing at the can that Harry was holding. He was about to walk out but Harry tugged his sleeve to make him stop from leaving.
“Where are you going?” Harry bitterly asked and Edward just stared at him with that emotionless face.
“To Emmett.” He casually answered.
Harry looked up to my brother with sad eyes that made me cringed. “Why?”
“Earl’s not here yet. I’m going to ask him and my men to look for that brat.” He informed, putting the stick of cigarette in between his lips.
I sheepishly rubbed the back of my head. As much as I wanted to tell him that I’m already back, I didn’t think I could show myself right now especially at a situation like this.
“I texted Matthias and he told me Earl’s with him. There’s no need for you to go to Emmett’s, right?” Harry begged while continuing on tugging Edward’s sleeve.
Edward narrowed his eyes on him. “What the f**k is your problem anyway? It’s not like we’re gonna do something.”
I saw the pain on Harry’s eyes. “But still...I don’t trust him. Not after what happened.”
I was staring at them, utterly confused and lost at what was happening. What kind of relationship does these two even have?
“I don’t like it when you go to him. Spend the night with me, Edward. Please.” Harry stepped closer to Edward and my eyes widened when I saw him wrapping his arms around my brother’s waist. “Please, I’m begging you. Stay with me.”
Edward paused for a second before releasing a long sigh. He ran a frustrated hand on his already messy hair. “Why? Give me a damn good reason to stay here with you.”
Harry’s hand was trembling, and I didn’t exactly know why but from the looks of it, it’s probably because he’s anxious. He pursed his lips before looking straight into Edward’s eyes. “Because I love you.”
I was astounded at what I just heard. Woah, Harry loved Edward? They’re dating? But how? Edward and Harry together? That never crossed my mind, ever.
Edward puffed another smoke from his cigarette. “God damn it.” He extinguished his smoke, throwing it in the sink as he leaned towards Harry. “I want to kiss you now but you can’t stand the smell of cigarette, right?” He teasingly asked.
Harry groaned. He grabbed Edward’s head to kiss him deep on the lips. They exchanged a really long and passionate kiss and I was just standing there behind the wall, watching them like a pervert.
The two of them finally pulled away. Harry’s face was red while Edward’s remained impassive.
“Do me.” Harry seductively whispered. He rubbed his crotch on Edward’s and the action made me embarrassed.
Without warning, Edward suddenly pushed Harry on the counter, carrying him to make him lie down on the table. “Fuck.” He hastily unbuckled Harry’s belt before unzipping his pants and pulling it off of his legs. “You’re the only one who can do this to me. Why’re you so good in seducing me, hmmm?” He started to pleasure Harry’s member.
Harry shyly smiled. He put his hands on Edward’s head. “I - I don’t know...maybe because...you love me?”
Edward smirked but didn’t answer Harry. “Shut up and let me f**k you, brat.”
At this point, I should have probably walked away from this very private moment. I could feel my face heating as my brother and Matthias’ friend started doing the deed. What should I do? If I pass through, they will surely see me because the kitchen doesn’t have any doors.
“Come on, faster...” I heard Harry’s voice as I slowly crept away from them.
I breathe in deeply, deciding that I should just wait outside until the two of them finish their private business.
Tomorrow afternoon, Harry ambushed me while I was going to the library to borrow some reference books.
“You absolutely cannot tell anyone about what you saw last night!!” I blinked at what Harry was saying.
“Huh?”
“You know...about Edward and me!” He half-whispered, half-screamed.
I suddenly flushed when I remembered that intimate scene that I managed to witness. “W-what about it?”
Harry whined. “Don’t play dumb, Earl! Please, I’m begging you! Don’t tell anyone especially Matthias about Edward and I!” He begged.
“Can I ask why you don’t want Matthias to know about your relationship with Edward?” I asked and he deeply blushed. I couldn’t help but think how vulnerable and cute he was.
He surveyed the corridor and after seeing no one, he continued to talk. “B-because if Matthias knows that I’m dating Edward again, he’ll probably, DEFINITELY kill me.”
Huh? Again? They dated before already? “Why is Matthias involved in this?”
“The leader of the Red Dragon and the leader of the Black Panther are well...let’s just say they’re not in good terms...for now." He informed.
“Okay.” Matthias was the leader of the Red Dragon. Then the Black Panther was ruled by - ? “So who’s the leader of this Black Panther gang?”
Harry shook his head. “No! I can’t tell you. I’ll be killed if tell you but please just don’t tell Matthias!” I panicked when he suddenly kneeled in front of me. “I’m begging you, Earl!”
I quickly pulled Harry to his feet. “Okay! I understand! You don’t need to kneel, Harry!”
Harry gave me a thankful smile. “You’re a good friend, Earl!” He hugged me and I couldn’t do anything but hug him back as well.
“Err...you’re welcome?”
Harry waved a hand at me. “I’ll see you later! Remember our deal, okay?!” He quickly trotted away from me, saying that he still have classes to attend to.
I was woken up from my thoughts when a pen landed in front of me. “What’s wrong with you?” Matthias asked in irritation.
“I-I’m sorry!” I apologized and quickly got back to writing down important notes on my notebook.
Matthias and I decided to stop at a coffee shop since I asked him to help me review some of our subjects for the upcoming exams. I was glad that Matthias agreed to come with me. I really wanted to spend some time with him.
“Is your wound okay?” He asked all of a sudden while browsing the thick History book in front of him. He looked bored but he wasn’t saying anything about it.
I caressed my arm that was still covered with bandages. “Ah yes. I’m fine. Thank you.”
Matthias smiled a little. “Good.”
I continued writing down on my notebook, not even noticing that the waitress was already beside us with our drinks. I saw her and quickly moved our things to make space “Here’s your order. One large Chocolate Iced Coffee and one Strawberry Shortcake with Caramel Frap.” The waitress recited while putting it down on the table. She gave Matthias a seductive smile but he only ignored her.
When the waitress went away, I started eating my Strawberry Shortcake. I hummed in approval after tasting the creamy goodness of the cake. “Mmmmhm, delicious.”
Matthias made a face. “Geez, you’re eating like a girl. Can’t you eat it more normally?” Matthias teased.
I pouted at him but didn’t say anything to retort his statement.
He sipped his Chocolate Iced Coffee. “Berlin Wall was constructed when?” He asked all of a sudden while looking straight in me.
“August 13, 1961.”
“When was it destructed?”
“November 9, 1989.”
I sighed in relief. Those were the last questions for our History subject. “Thanks for helping me review History.”
Matthias smirked. “It’s nothing.” He was idly writing on a piece of paper. I was curious what he was doing so I decided to take a peak.
“What’re you doing?” I asked after he put the pen down. I took the paper and saw that it was covered with Geometrical formulas and complex problems that were already solved. I stared at him in disbelief. He was doing this while asking me those questions? “Wow. You’re amazing.”
Matthias sipped his iced coffee. “I know.”
I smiled at him. Yeah, you really were amazing Matthias. You’re making me fall in love with you again.
I watched him take a pack of cigarette out of his pocket, putting his lighter on top of the box. He pulled a stick and lighted it. When he noticed that I was staring, he raised a brow. “What?”
“Eh...? No.”
“Is smoking bothering you?” He nonchalantly asked.
I shook my head. “No it’s fine. I don’t like it but I don’t hate it either.”
Matthias snorted. “Good. Harry hated it whenever I smoke.”
“Oh yeah...I remember Edward and Harry...” I gasped when Matthias gave me a hard glare.
“What?”
I forced a smile. “N-nothing!” I hastily ate my strawberry cake to stop Matthias from asking but he continued to glare at me.
“What about Edward and Harry? What happened?” He clenched his fist and I was seriously getting intimidated from his glare. “Tell me, Earl. Are they dating again?”
I dropped my fork in denial. “N-no! I don’t know! I mean...I’m not...!” I looked away from him. I promised Harry not to tell Matthias anything about Edward and him and yet I broke it!
“Damn it. I should have known. f**k!” Matthias almost kicked the table but good thing he managed to control his anger. “They’re always together now. I bet they’re seeing each other again. f*****g damn it.”
“Why do you hate Edward so much? Did he do something - ” I suddenly remembered what Harry said this morning. He said the leader of the Red Dragon and Black Panther weren’t in good terms.
I widened my eyes in realization. “Edward’s the leader of the Black Panther?!”
Matthias sighed. “He’s your brother for f**k sake. And you don’t even know that.”
I scowled at him. I didn’t know much about my step-brother. As much as I wanted to talk to him and ask him things about him, I couldn’t. He was always irritated whenever he’s with me.
I’m not that stupid not to notice how much he hated me. And I wouldn’t blame him for that. It was kind of my fault why our mother was killed. He’s probably blaming me for her death.
The thought made my chest tighten in grief. “I’m sorry.”
Noticing my despair, Matthias clicked his tongue. “f**k. I didn’t mean to...damn it.” He pounded the table and almost everyone around us looked at him.
The atmosphere turned cold between Matthias and I and we remained silent for a long time. He’s probably feeling bad about what he said but knowing him, he won’t apologize that easily. He’s Matthias Blaise. His ego was surely stopping him from saying sorry.
I readied myself to tell Matthias that it’s alright but he had beaten me to it. “Harry met your brother when we were still freshmen.”
I looked up to see Matthias. His gaze was far from mine. “What?”
“They dated for a couple of months. And believe me, I was happy for them. I mean Edward was kind of my best pal back there since we’re operating the two biggest gangs here in New York.” Matthias explained in a low voice. “Everything was going fine until your f*****g brother did that.”
I furrowed my brows, confused at what Matthias was saying. “What did Edward do?”
I saw Matthias’ hands clenched in anger. “Harry found out that Edward was f*****g Emmett.”
To say that I was shocked was an understatement. “What?”
Matthias bitterly smirked. “I told Harry to break up with Edward and he did but of course, i***t Harry cannot stop loving your oh-so-charming brother.” He sarcastically said. “He became desperate...still clinging to Edward even after I told him to stop throwing himself to that asshole. But he didn’t stop, you know.” Matthias glared at me and I nervously gulped, waiting for his story to unfold. “He begged Edward over and over again.”
“What did my brother do then?”
“He didn’t want Harry anymore. That f*****g bastard threw him away just like that. I don’t know what his f*****g reasons are and I don’t really care anymore but now his got the guts to date Harry again.” Matthias gritted his teeth. “I’ll f*****g kill Edward. Son of a bitch.”
I never knew something like that happened to Edward and Harry. And I wasn’t expecting my brother and Emmett had that kind of relationship. I always thought of them as good friends rather than that.
I heaved a sigh. My head suddenly ached because of what Matthias just told me.
Matthias finally stood up after finishing his iced coffee. “Let’s go.”
I blinked at him. “Huh? Go where?”
“I’m going to talk to Edward.”
I stared at him. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was bound to happen.
