The next morning, Sophia trudged into school still determined to redeem herself after yesterday’s disaster. She was going to focus, work harder, and prove she could outshine Max Carter once and for all.
Easier said than done, because the moment she stepped into class, there he was. Max, sitting casually in his seat, leaning back with that smug grin plastered across his face. Jake was beside him, already whispering jokes that made Max snort with laughter. Sophia shot him a glare sharp enough to slice paper. He just raised his eyebrows at her, as if to say, Still mad? Cute.
Before Sophia could launch into one of her inner rants, the classroom door opened. In swept Ms. Cher, their homeroom teacher, carrying a clipboard. She clapped her hands, instantly silencing the chatter.
“Alright, everyone! Today, we’re starting a brand-new project,” she announced, her voice carrying that mix of cheer and authority that made students nervous. “This one’s going to test not just your brains, but also your responsibility.”A low murmur ran through the class. Sophia sat straighter, curiosity piqued. Max, annoyingly, looked utterly relaxed, twirling his pen. Meanwhile Ms.Cher began calling out names, pairing students into groups. Each time a name was read, students shuffled closer to their assigned partners. Lily leaned forward in her seat, shooting Sophia a hopeful grin.
“And finally,” Cher said, scanning the list. “Group Four: Sophia, Max, Lily… and Jake.”
Sophia’s jaw dropped. “WHAT?!”
The class burst into giggles. Lily clapped her hands like she’d just won the lottery, while Jake slapped Max on the back. Max, of course, smirked directly at Sophia.
“Oh, come on,” Sophia groaned, slumping in her chair. “This has to be some kind of cosmic punishment.” Cher wasn’t finished. She picked up a small basket from her desk and began handing out… eggs. Real eggs. Each one was tucked in a little cloth pouch for protection.
This project, Cher explained, placing an egg on Sophia’s desk, is called “The Family Experiment”. For the next week, each group must take care of this egg as if it were your child. That means responsibility, cooperation, and teamwork. If your egg breaks, your grade breaks with it. Sophia stared down at the egg in horror. Beside her, Max leaned closer, his voice low and teasing.
“Well, Mom,” he whispered, “looks like we’ve got ourselves a baby.”
Sophia nearly dropped the egg right then and there.
Ms. Cher – held the class in suspense. As she set her clipboard down, picked up a thick black marker, and with exaggerated care began writing on each egg.The room was so quiet you could hear the squeak of marker against shell. Finally, she reached Sophia’s group’s egg. She smiled faintly before carefully scrawling in bold letters:
Sophia + Max + Lily + Jake
Sophia let out a strangled noise. “You—you wrote it? On the egg? In permanent marker?!”
Cher nodded serenely. “Of course. This way, if the egg breaks, I will know exactly which group failed. No swapping eggs, no cheating. This is your child now.” Sophia buried her face in her hands. “I did not sign up for this level of stress.”Jake leaned back in his chair, grinning ear to ear. “Congrats, Soph. You and Max are officially co-parents. Want me to throw you two a baby shower?”
Lily snorted so hard she nearly fell out of her chair. “Oh my gosh, yes! I’ll get the tiny party hats!”
Sophia shot them both death glares, but Ms.Cher ignored the chaos and continued her instructions.
“You must treat this egg as though it were a real infant,” She said, clasping her hands behind her back. “That means keeping it safe, keeping it warm, and taking turns to watch over it. You may craft a carrier, or a crib, or any protective gear you think will help.”
Max raised a hand, pretending to be polite. “Uh, Ms. Cher? Just to clarify, are we expected to… change its diaper, too?”
The entire class howled with laughter.
Sophia whipped her head toward him, cheeks blazing. “MAX CARTER, SHUT UP!”
Cher arched a brow but smirked just slightly. “Thankfully not, Mr. Carter. But I do expect journal entries about how your group cared for the egg each day. Parenting is not only about actions but also reflection.”Sophia groaned again, banging her forehead lightly on her desk. “This is cruel. Pure, calculated cruelty.”
“And,” Ms.Cher added over her, “if the egg breaks, there are no replacements. Your grade will reflect your failure as parents. Understood?”A nervous ripple went through the class. Everyone nodded quickly.
“Good. Then I’ll leave you to plan.”
With that, Cher swept out of the classroom, her heels clicking against the tile.
The silence lasted exactly three seconds.
Then Max stood up, egg in hand, and sauntered straight to Cher's empty desk at the front. He leaned against it casually, twirling the egg like it was a basketball.
“So, teach” he said in a mock-serious voice, “who gets custody this week? Me or Sophia? I mean, I’m obviously the responsible one, but she does have the whole dramatic-mom vibe going on.” Sophia shot out of her seat so fast her chair screeched across the floor. “Give me that egg, Carter, before you drop our grade— I mean, our child!”
Max grinned, holding the egg just out of reach. “Relax, Mom. Daddy’s got it.”
The class lost it. Jake clutched his stomach, tears in his eyes. “Daddy’s got it! Oh, this is gold!”
Lily wasn’t any better. “Sophia, you have to admit, you two are like the most chaotic parents ever. I’d pay to see this in real life.”
Sophia lunged forward, snatching the egg from Max’s hand and cradling it protectively against her chest. “Listen here, Carter,” she hissed. “If this egg even chips, it’ll be your funeral.”
Max only leaned in closer, voice low enough for just her to hear. “Careful, Mom. Don’t squeeze the baby too hard."
Sophia’s face went scarlet.
