SPARKS OF RIVALRY
------
The atmosphere inside Pine Hill Elementary was electric. Posters for the annual Knowledge Bowl lined the hallways, and the whispers of excited students filled the air like music before a performance. To most kids, the competition was just a chance to get out of regular classes. To Sophia and Max, it was war.
Sophia adjusted the sleeves of her neat school uniform as she sat in the front row, notebook balanced perfectly on her desk. Her hazel eyes burned with determination. She could already picture herself standing at the front of the auditorium, holding that shiny gold medal that declared first place winner.
Across the room, Max Carter slouched casually in his chair, spinning a pencil between his fingers as if the entire contest was just a warm-up. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his easy grin sent waves of irritation through Sophia. He always looks so calm… like he doesn’t even have to try.
When the teacher stepped to the front, the chatter died instantly. “Welcome to this year’s Knowledge Bowl! Let’s begin.”
The questions came fast. Geography. History. Math. Basic English.
“Which river is the longest in Africa?”
Sophia’s hand shot up. “The Nile!”
Correct.
“What is twelve times twelve?”
Max answered before anyone else. “One hundred forty-four.”
Correct again.
The back-and-forth rhythm between the two of them quickly turned into the main attraction. Other students tried to keep up, but the duel at the front was undeniable. Sophia’s pulse quickened with each question, the stakes felt higher than ever.
By the final round, it was neck-and-neck. Sophia’s palms were damp against her notebook, but she refused to show weakness. She answered confidently, her voice strong, even when her heart felt like it might burst.
Then came the last question.
“What is the capital of Australia?”
Sophia’s hand flew into the air, her lips already parting to shout “Sydney!” But Max’s voice cut through the air first, smooth and steady.
“Canberra.”
The teacher smiled. “Correct. And with that, Max Carter takes first place!”
Applause filled the room. Some kids clapped politely, while others cheered Max’s name. Sophia forced a smile, though every nerve in her body screamed with frustration. She’d studied harder than anyone, and still, he had beaten her.
Max turned in his seat, catching her eye across the room. That infuriating grin spread across his face as he mouthed, better luck next time.
Sophia narrowed her eyes, her jaw tightening. She leaned over her desk, muttering under her breath, “Next time, Max… I’ll crush you.”
He raised an eyebrow, clearly amused, before casually leaning back as though victory came as naturally to him as breathing.
