Chapter 2

Emily's Pov The following day, I woke up early, as usual, to prepare breakfast for Nathan. I didn't want him to suspect I knew anything, so I had to act normal and nice to him. "Thank you for the breakfast, Emily; you are the best," He praised me as he ate the food. I watched him in silence and only smiled, but in my mind, I wished he would choke to death. When he was done, he stood up, holding my hands, drew me closer to his body and placed his hands on my waist. I felt repulsive and almost pushed him away, but I did not. I had yet to find evidence of what he had said last night, so I had to endure his touch to not blow my cover. "I'm sorry about yesterday. I will make it up to you and promise that I will get you a gift when coming back from work," He promised. "Alright, I will be expecting," I said as I smiled. He kissed my forehead, and I felt nauseous. I could not help it, I had to push him back so I could breathe. He raised his eyebrows in surprise with a questioning look on his face. "Are you okay? You look pale," He said with concern. Anybody seeing him acting this way would think he cared, but after hearing his conversation with Victoria last night, I knew it was all a lie. This man was damn good at acting, I have to give him that. "I'm fine, just feeling a bit tired," I lied. "Alright, rest early, and don't forget to clean my study," He reminded me. "Yeah, I will do that," I told him. 'and more' I said in my mind. "Take care of yourself. You know it would not be nice for you to break down before Evan comes home," He reminded me. Hearing of Evan brought back a feeling of betrayal, and I quickly stepped back from him. "I know," I said, a bit stiff. "Alright ..." He was still talking when his phone rang. I took a peek and saw that it was Victoria. "I'm running late for work. See you later. I might not be coming back early tonight because we could not conclude the meeting yesterday, so don't wait for me," He said and ran out as he picked up the call. I watched him leave and scoffed. He certainly did think I was a fool. I knew his so-called meeting was another rendezvous with Victoria, but I didn't care. I had something better to do. I quickly locked the door and went straight to Nathan's study. I barely entered his study except to clean up, but today, I have more plans than just cleaning up. I began to search through every drawer to see if I could find any evidence, but there was nothing. I thought about it and concluded that Nathan would not put something of such importance where it would be easy for me to find it, so I knew there must be a secret safe. I started touching the walls, and then my hands touched something, and it clicked. I pushed it, and a safe came into view. I checked and saw that it required a password, and I decided to try my birthday date. I imputed it, but it did not work; I tried his birthday date, but it still did not work. I tried Evan's and even our wedding date, but nothing worked. I stood there confused, wondering what he might have used when the idea struck me. Victoria! How could it have escaped my mind? If there was anyone whose birthday date Nathan could never forget, it was Victoria. I remembered the date Victoria celebrated her birthday last year and discovered that her birthday was in two days. I used the date, and it worked. Though I had expected it, I still could not help but feel a pang of pain in my heart. Maybe, just maybe, if Nathan had used my date, I would have thought twice about my actions and believed that he actually did love me at one point, but who was I deceiving? Victoria would always come first in Nathan's life. I opened the safe and brought out different documents and receipts. I sat on the floor and began to go through them. The documents show the transaction between the Doctor and Nathan. I also saw the contract form, which showed that it was Victoria's egg that was used with Nathan's sperm for the IVF and not mine. I had been so overjoyed with the thought of carrying Nathan's child that I never thought for a moment that I was just a surrogate. Throughout my pregnancy, Nathan was supportive, and I thought it was because he loved me, but now I know better. I saw a burner phone inside the safe, and when I opened it, I saw the text message from the doctor saying that my womb had been successfully removed, and Nathan sent him evidence of payment and even added extra. I felt hurt, but I crumbled. I could not believe I was just a tool for Nathan. They made a mockery of me and made sure that I would not be able to give birth again. I placed my hands on my tummy and made a promise. I will make sure Nathan, Victoria, and everyone involved in hurting me pay dearly for it. I took my phone, snapped the documents and receipt, and sent the messages on the burner phone to my number. When I was done, I erased every trace of my activities from the phone, put everything back, and locked the safe. I had gotten the evidence I wanted, so now it was time to act. ***
