Chapter 1
Emily's Pov
On the night of my seventh marriage anniversary to Nathan, it became the worst night of my life when I heard what I was never supposed to hear.
I prepared a romantic dinner for both of us and sent our son Evan to Nathan's mother so we could have the evening for ourselves, but nothing could have prepared me for what I got.
It was already getting late, and I had not heard from Nathan, so I called him.
“Hello honey,” I said with my face full of smiles as if he could see me.
“Hello beautiful, how are you?” He asked.
“I'm fine, but I'm still waiting for you; today is our anniversary, you know, and since Evan is not with us, I was thinking we should spend the time together, so I have prepared something for us,” I told him cheerfully.
Silence was at the other end of the phone, and I thought the call might have disconnected.
“Hello, Nathan, are you there?” I asked him.
He seemed to recover himself and quickly answered.
“Yes, I remember, but I will be running late; I have a meeting soon.”
“This late?” I asked, surprised.
“Yes. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I will come soon. Just wait a little while for me.” He pleaded with me.
“Alright, I will,” I replied though disappointed.
“ Thank you, Emily, you are the best,” He said and ended the call.
I sat down dejectedly and decided to scroll through the internet while I waited for Nathan. Just then, my phone chimed, and when I looked, it was a message notification.
I checked and saw that it was a video. Surprised, I clicked on it and what I saw made my blood cold. It was a video of Nathan kissing a woman.
The woman looked familiar, but her face was not visible enough. What also caught my attention was that it was the same suit Nathan had put on when he had left this morning.
'Was Nathan cheating on me?' I asked myself as I wondered who the oddly familiar woman was.
I was still thinking when Nathan came in.
"Hello, love," He greeted me as he pecked me on the cheek.
He smelled of a strange perfume that I knew he did not have.
"I'm sorry I'm late. The business meeting I told you about took a lot of time. I was almost getting angry but had to control myself because it was a meeting with investors," He explained as he sat down.
I looked at him, unable to speak, then blurted out the first words that came to my mind.
"You smell different," I told him.
He blinked at me in surprise and quickly composed himself.
"Yeah, it's from the meeting I'm coming from; you know how it is when you meet a lot of people, their perfumes tend to rub off on you," He explained, smiling.
I smiled back at him while pretending like I did not know better. He knew I loved him to the moon and even trusted him more than I trusted myself, which was why he felt he could do what he liked. I also knew I would have believed him if I had not seen that video.
But I thought the video was all, not knowing I was about to get the shock of my life.
After taking a few bites of the food, Nathan dropped his spoon.
“Is something wrong? Is the food not to your taste?” I asked him.
“Oh dear, the food is delicious, but I'm too tired to eat, and I'm already feeling sleepy; if I eat more than this, I will become bloated,” He explained, sounding apologetic.
“It's alright, I understand,” I told him.
I was already tired of seeing his face and eating with him, so I was glad he had made the suggestion himself.
“I will make it up to you, I promise,” He said.
“It's alright, Nathan; I understand how you feel,” I assured him, even though I felt like hitting his head with a plate.
“Alright, let me go shower up, and I'll rest,” He said, pecking me on the cheek.
I almost slapped him, but I held myself back. I watched him go to the room, and I hissed.
I cleared the table while he went to freshen up. I decided to confront him about the video, so I went to meet him in our bedroom.
The door was slightly open, and I was about to enter when I heard something shocking.
"Relax, she will never find out. You know how gullible and trusting she is," Nathan said on the phone.
I wondered who he was talking to but immediately got my answer.
"Victoria, calm down! I told her I had a meeting that ran late, and I'm sorry I had to leave you for her stupid dinner," He said apologetically.
My eyes widened in shock, so Nathan was indeed cheating, and now I know why the lady in the video looked familiar.
It was Nathan's childhood sweetheart and now business partner. Victoria!
"Yes, don't worry, you know you are the one I love; she is just a means to an end, and besides, if I didn't marry her, how would she have given birth to our son?" Nathan continued.
Wait! What? Son? Evan was not my son? What the hell was going on?
I was going to barge in when Nathan's following words stopped me right in my tracks.
"Yes, and I made sure the doctor removed her womb so she would not be able to give birth again; I don't want any child from her to compete with our son," He said.
My heart began to beat fast. I covered my mouth with my hands to stop myself from screaming out, but Nathan was not done.
"Yes, there is no way she can claim the baby because the egg we used for the IVF was your own and not hers and if there are any issues, I will handle her myself, even if it means ending her life," He promised her smiling.
I could not breathe then, and I mistakenly hit the door. Nathan heard the sound and stopped talking.
"I'm coming, my love; let me check on something," He said, walking towards the door.
I quickly tiptoed downstairs, went to the living room, and lay on the couch, pretending to be deeply asleep while my heart was beating fast.
Nathan came down and saw me sleeping. He touched my cheek to check if I was asleep, and I closed my eyes tight.
“Emily? Emily, are you asleep?” He asked.
I could hear him but pretended not to; I deepened my breathing and started snoring.
He stood up and left when he was sure I was fast asleep.
I opened my eyes immediately after he left, and tears fell.
Gosh, I just prayed it was not true.
