Chapter 4

Emily's Pov I reread the message and smiled. 'Perfect timing,' I said to myself. I was already tired of the party and barely controlled myself from exposing them when I got the text. I could not leave just like that, so I had to devise an excuse. "Nathan, I'm feeling a headache, so I want to go home now," I told him. Nathan barely noticed anything and nodded because he was too busy playing the perfect family with Victoria and Evan. The sight of them together made my stomach turn. I drove straight to meet the private investigator at a small coffee shop downtown. The place was nearly empty, which was perfect for our meeting. "Mrs. Carter," the investigator greeted me as I sat down. "What did you find?" I asked, not bothering with pleasantries. He slid a folder across the table. "Everything you need to know is here." I opened it and began to read. The first page showed bank statements. Nathan had transferred large sums of money to Victoria for years, even before our marriage. "Keep going," the investigator urged. The following document made my hands shake. It was a property deed purchased three years ago for a suburban house. The owners? Nathan and Victoria Carter. "They've been living together?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "On weekends, yes. Your husband tells you he's on business trips, but he's actually with her and the boy." I was shocked. I remember that, on most weekends, Nathan always took Evan to his mother's place. According to him, his mother needed the constant company of her grandson, and he also told me that he does not like me looking stressed, so I should use the weekends to rest. I had believed him and even found it endearing and caring. It was one of the things that made me love him the most, but now, I have found out that it was all a lie. Nathan never took Evan to his mother's place, he always took him to the house he shared with Victoria. I had thought that nothing could break me again after everything I had discovered, but this new information shocked me to my bones. I was at the point of tears, but I refused to cry. He was not worth it. I gathered myself and continued reading through. I flipped through more pages and found photos of them together, looking like a happy family. In some pictures, Victoria was wearing a wedding ring. "Are they married?" I asked. "Not legally. But they act like it. They introduce themselves as husband and wife in that community." I felt sick. "What about the doctor? The one who performed my surgery?" The investigator's expression darkened. "Dr. Phillip Morris. He lost his medical license five years ago for malpractice. He operates an underground clinic now for people willing to pay enough." "So the surgery to remove my womb..." "Was illegal. And potentially life-threatening. You're lucky to be alive, Mrs. Carter." I sat back, trying to process everything. Nathan hadn't just betrayed me; he had risked my life because of what? I still could not wrap my head around what I could have done to Nathan to warrant such an act of wickedness from him. "There's more," the investigator said, pointing to the last few pages. I turned to them and found documents about Nathan's company. According to these papers, Nathan had been embezzling money for years, funnelling it through Victoria's accounts. "Your husband is in serious financial trouble," the investigator explained. "His company is on the verge of bankruptcy. The only thing keeping it afloat is your family's money." That's when it hit me. My parents had left me a substantial inheritance when they died. Nathan had convinced me to invest most of it in his business. "He married me for my money," I whispered. The investigator looked at me with pity in his eyes. I could not blame him, I was indeed pitiable. "And once he gets full control of your inheritance, which happens on your eighth anniversary according to the terms of your parents' will, he plans to divorce you." I remembered the clause in my parents' will. I would gain complete control of my inheritance on my eighth wedding anniversary, provided I was still married. My parents had wanted to ensure I found a stable relationship before handling such a large sum. Nathan had planned everything perfectly. Marry me, wait until I get my inheritance, then leave me for Victoria. "Thank you," I told the investigator, closing the folder. "This is exactly what I needed." "What will you do now?" he asked. I smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Make them pay. All of them." As I drove home, my mind was racing with plans. Nathan thought he was smart, but he had underestimated me. He thought I was a naive, trusting wife who would never suspect anything. He was about to learn how wrong he was. When I got home, the house was empty. Nathan had texted, saying he was staying at his mother's with Evan. Another lie. (Alright, take care of Evan and send my regards to your mother) I texted him back. I went to our bedroom and opened my closet. Behind my clothes was a safe that Nathan didn't know about. Inside was the emergency cash my parents had advised me to keep separate from my main accounts. I counted out enough money to last me a few months, then added the documents from the investigator and the evidence I had collected from Nathan's study. Next, I called my lawyer again. "I need to make some changes to my will," I told him. "And I need to do it immediately." "Of course, Mrs. Carter. I can see you first thing tomorrow morning." "Perfect. And one more thing - I need you to freeze my inheritance. No one touches it, especially not my husband." "May I ask why?" "Because I'm about to destroy him.” ***
