Chapter Four

KILLIAN I hadn’t seen Chleo since she ran from the ballroom, two hours prior. I followed her scent which lead me to her room. I knocked on the door. “Chleo, it’s Killian. May I come in?” She didn’t answer but I could hear her heartbeat, slow and steady, followed by her breathing. She was sleeping? My cellphone rang. “Hello?” “Your Majesty,” Greg said, “I have the key for 411, where are you currently?” “Standing outside 411,” I sighed. “Bring it to me.” Three minutes later the elevator doors opened and Greg stepped out. “Here you go,” he glanced at the Chleo’s door. “Is she alright?” “She’s sleeping, I can hear her heartbeat and breathing,” I explained and took the room key. “Thank you, Greg. How’s Jillian?” “She misses me, of course,” he said. “I told her I’d be home tonight, with your permission, of course.” “Of course,” I agreed. “My sister needs you more than I do tonight.” “Thank you. Good luck, Killian,” he said as he stepped back into the elevator. I took a deep breath, straightened my tie and slid the key card into the door’s slot. When the little light changed from red to green, I opened the door. When I stepped inside the room, I found Chleo, not on the bed, curled into a ball in the corner of the room. Tears stained her face, she’d been crying and I wasn’t here to hold her. I wiped the nearly dried tears from her cheeks with my thumb before placing a kiss on her forehead. “Chleo,” I said lightly, trying to wake her. “Hmm,” she mumbled as she began to stir. “Little Star,” I said, “are you okay?” She jumped up, clearly startled by the fact she wasn’t alone. “Your Majesty!” “Killian,” I reminded her. “Killian,” she said, “sorry, what are you doing here?” “I came to talk to you, why are you on the floor?” “I,” she sighed and looked away. “Tell me, please,” I insisted. “Everything that happened today brought all of the pain from Jake’s rejection back to the surface. It hurt, I was crying, I called my friend and then I must’ve fallen asleep.” She looked away again, shifting her body into a more comfortable position. “Chleo, don’t be ashamed for feeling what you feel,” I told her. “I shouldn’t feel this way, it’s been three years. Owen moved on from Rebecca’s rejection, he has a chosen mate now.” “Owen created a new bond,” I said. “Doing so, severed what little feeling he had for Rebecca.” “I’ve tried to sever it, I’ve…” I knew what she was saying, she’d been with other men to dull the pain. A growl escaped my throat. “You’ve had relationships with others,” I stated. “Yes, though it was just s*x” she said, turning away. “I’m sorry.” Though the thought of any man touching, kissing, and f*****g her drove me and my wolf crazy, I couldn’t fault her for her past. “No need to apologise, Chleo. You’re a grown woman, I didn’t expect my mate to be a virgin.” “You growled,” she stated. “Honestly, as a wolf, the alpha male in me wants to rip the heads off of any male who’s looked at you, let alone touched you, but that’s normal,” I said. “I’m hardwired to protect you in all ways. As a man, how could I place blame on for relationships you’ve had before me? I’ve been with a few women myself,” I admitted. A small growl came from Chleo and her green eyes began to glow a little, signalling her wolf was close to the surface. “No need for that, Little Star, those women mean nothing to me, never have and never will.” I felt my own wolf forcing his way forward, the presence of Chleo’s had lured him out. “I think our wolves would like to meet,” I said. “She wants out, bad,” Chleo admitted. “She’s been trying since I caught your scent this morning.” “They can meet in time,” I told her. “For now, I want to spend time with you; not as your King, but as your mate, Killian. Will you let me take you on a date this evening?” “A date?” She asked. “Yes,” I replied. “Time together, just the two of us. I’d like to take you out for dinner.” “Okay,” she said, and my heart soared. “I’m going to show you how you were supposed to be treated,” I told her, “like the Queen you are. I’ll pick you up at eight.” “That’s in two hours,” she said, eyes wide. “I need to get ready.” She scrambled to get on her feet, pushing me onto my ass. I couldn’t help but laugh. “I am so sorry,” she said, slapping her hand to her mouth. “It’s fine, you’re excited,” I said. “Maybe a little,” she said. “I’m glad,” I said, placing a kiss on her forehead. “I’m going to leave now, before I give into the temptation to watch you get ready.” “You can stay if you want,” she said, to my surprise. “I took a shower this morning, so all I need to do is fix my hair and pick something to wear.” “I, too, need to get ready. I’ll see you at eight, Little Star.” CHLEO “A date?” Owen asked. “The King of all werewolves, is taking you on a date? Like a normal person?” “That’s what he asked for,” I said. “So let me get this straight,” he started. “You called me earlier, reeling from what occurred in that ballroom, then you passed out on the floor while crying, His Majesty found you there, and then asked you on a date.” “Yes, that is what happened, yes.” “What did you pack?” He asked. “Switch this over to a video call.” As soon as Owen’s face was on my screen, I started digging through my suitcase. I pulled out a blue, strapless, knee length dress and a green blouse with black pants. “Put on the dress, let me see it on you.” So I did. “That’s the one!” Mia exclaimed before her face replaced Owen’s. “Sorry, baby. Chleo, that dress is perfect. It hugs your curves just right and extenuates your cleavage. Yep, yep, the King won’t be able to keep his eyes, or hands, off of you.” “Mia, we just met, I’m sure his hands won’t be all over me. We’re just having dinner.” “Dinner, sure, and you’ll be dessert.” “I’m not having s*x with him,” I said. “Not with that attitude,” she replied. “Okay,” Owen said, “I do not want, or need, to hear about my best friend’s s*x life, or lack thereof.” “Hey!” I yelled. “Sorry, Chleo,” he said, “but really, would you want to hear about mine?” I side eyed the wall, “I already have,” I said and looked at Mia. “Ugh,” he groaned, “right, girl talk.” “I promise, I’m not having s*x tonight. We’re getting to know each other.” “You say that,” Mia stated, “but he’s your mate and you’re his. The pheromones and the pull will be hard to resist.” “I’ll survive,” I said. “But will he?” Owen asked. “Look, Chleo, he’s a twenty-something Alpha male, and the King. He has needs and he just found his fated mate. I’m sure he’ll try to be a gentleman, but speaking from experience, before Rebecca rejected me, the only thing I wanted to do was f**k her. The King will be no different.” “Oh, s**t,” I said.
