Chapter One
SOLENNE
“Mate!” Alpha Roman said with glee in his eyes but he was not referring to Solenne. He was walking towards the red-haired woman standing across the hall.
Everyone looked in dismay, shame covering Solenne, his Luna, like a shield, as the red-haired woman also walked towards Roman. They met in the middle and gave themselves a warm hug. “Mate!” She cooed.
Goosebumps gripped Solenne. She bent her head down in shame and stole a glance at the woman, admiring the ethereal, divine beauty who was also Roman's sister-in-law, Dilara.
Shocking, right?
How did Roman's sister-in-law get wrapped into this?
Well, she is Roman's brother's widow and her father is Alpha Ian, of Moon Black pack. This man was one of the elders that officiated Solenne's wedding and a very good family friend.
And today, his daughter was disrespecting Solenne and he could not call her to order!!
Solenne and Roman were not fated mates, we met at a function in a neighboring pack. She was more like a refugee, but he told her it did not matter. They bonded immediately, fell in love and got married.
Roman had claimed her and they had marked each other!
Roman’s late mother loved Solenne incredibly and she blessed the union. Today was her remembrance and it was today of all days, that Roman had chosen to rub that he had found his fated mate on Solenne's face?
Roman’s mother’s admiration for Solenne was mainly because she was the success behind many projects in their pack. Their birth rate was dwindling tremendously and she came in, solved that problem with the knowledge she had from ancient medicine. She had come from a long line of healers. She could heal and cure most diseases. Hence, Solenne was golden.
Solenne also helped their agricultural sector boom. She introduced mixed crop species that sold expensively and we became a major food distributor for many packs, even the human world. She also made sure we used the crops to produce snacks and beverages, turning the pack into a great industrial hub.
Then, Roman was very proud of Solenne. He would sing her praises and tell her she was his dearly beloved. His mother even swore they would be together forever. But two months after she died? Everything changed.
The remembrance ceremony was filled with very important guests. Solenne's face blushed so hard, you’d think she dunked it into paprika. Everyone was waiting for her to say something.
“Mmmm,” Alpha Ian mused, continuing to eat his food and refusing to say anything.
The atmosphere of the hall had changed. Solenne saw Luna Constance, her best friend, looking at her with very angry eyes, wanting her to say something.
Constance wanted her to put the b***h in her place!!
Hmmm…
“Alpha Roman only has one mate and that is me. There is no need to panic. I understand that she is his twin brother’s widow and this may be her coping mechanism,” Solenne announced.
Solenne used her side-eye to glare at Roman, expecting him to say something but he kept mute. Dilara quietly left Roman's side to sit near her father and the feast continued. She paid her last respect to her late mother-in-law and stormed off to her quarters.
**********
Roman walked into Solenne's room, dismissing her maids and asking to speak to her in private.
Immediately her maids left, he hugged her tightly. “Alpha Ian spoke to me after the feast. He said that if it is true that Dilara is my mate, I would have to marry her.”
“What?!” I was stunned. “Alpha Ian said that?”
Roman flipped and suddenly he changed. “If it is confirmed that truly, she is my mate, I will have to marry her. Don’t worry, Solenne, I will never place her above you. You will be Luna and she will be Luna Regent or Luna Assistant.”
Luna Assistant? Solenne had never heard of such a thing. She knew werewolf laws and she was very sure Alpha Roman was talking gibberish.
“We made a promise to be together forever. My mother made us swear that even if our fated mates come, we will reject them,” Solenne cried.
“Hmmmmm.”
“Say something! Don't keep silent on me!!”
“You cannot have two wives. It is not allowed.”
“Alpha Ian says it can be done.”
“It is against the laws, Roman. Alpha Ian is leading you on. Don't listen to him, please,” Solenne begged.
“Dont blame Alpha Ian, please. He is just worried about Dilara's mental health. It is what any father would do, including me.”
Beads of sweat formed all over Solenne's forehead. She wanted Rowan to see that she was enraged.
“I’m so sorry, Solenne.”
“Hmmm,” she cooed. “Surely, there's a way to overturn it. Right? Can't she be rejected? I can accompany you to Alpha Ian's pack. I can hold your hand and comfort you while you do that.”
Roman’s brows furrowed into a frown. “Let me see if I can bring it up with Alpha Ian. He may accept, but he will want a lot of money.”
Hours later, Roman and his crew left to Moon Black pack, Aloha Ian’s pack and Solenne was left alone in my room.
Solenne's favorite maid, Ilya, came to serve her. While cleaning her nails, she noticed Solenne's countenance was sad. Solenne was not as talkative as she always was.
“My lady..” Ilya cooed, hesitant to say what was on her mind.
“News has spread about the Alpha bringing in a second wife. Are you going to accept this? Are you going to return to Border Wood pack if he marries her? What will be my fate?”
The glass in Solenne's hands almost shattered. She was mute, unable to utter a word. “Don’t worry, Ilya. I am not going anywhere. The Alpha will not take a second wife. He will not let any shame come to me. Okay?”
Ilya nodded and smiled. She continued her work in relief but Solenne's heart was not at peace. Night was coming and Roman was still not back. Or was he back, with Dilara beside him?
Solenne dressed up and went outside to confirm her fears. Roman’s Beta, Levi, was acting really strange. He avoided every question Solenne asked him.
He was in a hurry to leave and even Roman’s Gamma, Lavinge, asked his guards to stop Solenne from coming to the borders.
Solenne also tried to do something to pass time. Her wolf was equally restless. She turned and ran around the room, playing with a plastic ball to ease off stress.
‘Roman, what's happening? Please, come back to me. Come back safely. I miss you,’ she kept muttering under her breath.
Had Rogues attacked him? No! If he were dead or wounded, Solenne would feel a sign because we had marked each other!!
Suddenly, sometime around 11pm, her hands began to convulse and her heart beat out of proportion. A sharp pain seared in my chest!
Roman!!!
Her breath suddenly became inconsistent and she struggled for balance, her stamina losing its hold. “Somebody, help!!” She screamed but no one heard.
Guards surrounded her door but didn't care to help Solenne. Could it have been Roman, who instructed them not to care?
She knew that pain. The pain that made her mark feel like someone was melting it with a hot iron. The pain that almost threw her out of gravity. The pain of cheating. Roman had just been sexually intimate with Dilara!!
*******
The next morning, Roman returned back to the pack, Crescent Moon pack. Solenne was in her wolf form, waiting for him.
She had used her Alpha Wolf form to fight and challenge all the guards that would not let her walk around freely. Solenne challenged them, threatening to tear them into pieces.
Immediately Solenne saw Roman, her wolf pounced on him but Roman, also being a smart Alpha wolf, charged into his wolf form and challenged her.
They fought till their wolf forms were worn out. Solenne's wolf was very heartbroken. Roman pinned her to the floor and they both changed into our human forms.
“Damn you, Roman!!” Solenne spat!
“You don’t understand, Solenne. She is grieving. She hugged me and touched me and told me it had been a while since she’s made love. I am a man. It’s not unlikely for me to fall into temptation.”
Solenne was appalled. Was Roman really admitting to what he did? Was he proud of it?
“So you won’t say sorry?”
“No!! I did not do anything bad. She is my twin brother’s widow and most importantly, my mate!!”
Solenne's eyes widened in shock. Tears began to flow from her eyes. This was the worst day of her life.
“So, what about me?” I asked with a meek voice.
“You are still my Luna and I respect and honor you. Everyone in the pack does. But Dilara needs me. She is lonely. Can’t you see? She lost the love of her life. She needs to move in with us, here in Crescent Moon pack.”
“No!! I object.”
Roman laughed while he stroked my hair. “You look cute when you're angry, but I am the Alpha!! You cannot object to my will!!”
“I am Solenne Samuels, the Luna of Crescent Moon pack, and I reject you, Roman Martins.”
Roman laughed and got up. He dusted his clothes and rolled his eyes. “Nice try, but you go nowhere. And no, I don't accept your rejection.”
“I don't care if you do. Set me free. Reject me, I want to go back home.”
Roman mouthed Solenne's words, mimicking her and his beta laughed then he spoke. “Can you stop being a party popper? I and Roland were identical twins. Dilara says my face reminds me of his and being around me brings her comfort and healing. Bringing her here is the least I can do for her. Don’t be selfish!!”
“No!!” Solenne charged up, wanting to hold Roman but he did something that shocked her. He turned around and used his Alpha power on her.
“Solenne Samuels. You will only do as I say. Now, go on your knees.”
Solenne instantly went on her knees.
“Put both hands behind you, shut your mouth and look at me!!" Roman commanded and Solenne did exactly that.
“From today henceforth. You will only do as I say. You will accept whatever my rules are. You will not challenge me.”
Solenne nodded. Roman's Alpha power was sired to hypnotize. He had used it on others but never on Solenne.
After he had hypnotized Solenne, he whispered into her ears. “It has been discussed. The laws will be tweaked for me. My new bride will be coming home soon and you better learn to live with it.”
