CHAPTER ONE
CHAPTER ONE “No!” Detective Alexis Adams slapped Kevin Reed’s hand from her backside as he chased her around the extravagant halls of Grant Copeland’s mansion. “Stop!” She laughed, dipping inside a corridor. “Ah, you can’t get away.” His dressy wingtips squeaked against the stone floor. “Kevin.” Alexis laughed, making it to the stairs across from Grant’s conservatory. “I’m not playing.” “I’m not either.” He caught up with her, yanking the strap of her dark blue, sequin dress. “You said more spontaneous sex.” “I didn’t mean in Grant Copeland’s mansion during his birthday celebration.” She hopped up the stairs and stopped midway. “The entire town’s here including the media.” “So?” Kevin sweated, a suggestive glint settled in his gray eyes that resembled the sky after a heavy storm. “I want you.” He stopped in front of her, his minty breath pacifying her face. “All the guests are downstairs in the ballroom. No one will know if we’re quiet.” “That’s the problem.” Wetness formed between her p***y lips. “I don’t think I can be that quiet.” “Let’s find out.” He lunged at her. She jumped back in silver, slingback dress sandals. “We can’t.” A smug smile formed underneath his brand new Balbo beard. “I say we can.” He reached for her again. “No!” She rushed up the winding stairs and ran into one of Grant’s guestrooms. Kevin busted in, sweat staining his white shirt. “Jeez.” Alexis backed into the panel bed as he kicked the door closed and flung his tuxedo jacket on the futon by the dresser. Alexis ran to the other side of the bed. “Kevin—” “Come here.” He leapt across the bed, grabbing her waist. “Mr. Reed.” She batted her eyes as if to be an offended maiden. “What kind of woman do you think I am?” “The kind that needs to be f****d from behind.” He pushed her on the bed and yanked off her shoe. “Boy what the...?” She lay over, breathing hard. “Kevin, we can’t do this. Seriously.” He rubbed his tanned hands against her light-brown thigh. “A little s*x never hurt anybody.” He guided his warm tongue around her big toe. “Oh.” She moaned, gasping. “f**k. I can’t believe this is happening.” “It’s happening.” He perched her foot on his shoulder and undid his pants. Her chest heaved as he shoved his hand up her dress, grabbing her black, cotton panties. “God.” She sucked her index finger, awaiting his entrance. “You said from behind. Remember?” A line of sweat developed underneath the edge of his short, ebony-brown hair. “I sure did.” He turned her over in one swipe, her long, black hair twisting underneath her. “Watch my hair, shoot.” She pulled the ends free as Kevin climbed on top of her, unleashing his rod from the prison of his underpants. “Yes,” she begged. “f**k me.” “Now you want it, hm?” He nibbled the back of her neck. “No longer afraid someone might hear?” “s**t,” she spoke with her face against the silk bedspread. “They can watch, and I wouldn’t give a s**t right now.” He raised her dress above her waist and rolled his d**k against her c***k without entering. “Ready?” His weight crushed her, but she welcomed the pressure. “You know I am.” He grabbed her by the neck and moaned while thrusting inside her trembling p***y. “Yes, Kevin.” She reached back, grabbing his head. “Deeper. Don’t stop.” She threw her neck back, her hair in her face. “I can’t believe we’re doing this here.” “f**k, Grant.” He brought his hand underneath her, squeezing her breast. “Concentrate on this c**k and how much you want it.” “I do.” She closed her eyes. “As long as we’re together nothing else matters.” “That’s right.” He grunted, pumping. “It’s just you and me here...oh.” Moments later, he tightened inside her. “I’m gonna come.” “Yes.” She clenched her buttocks to force his o****m. “Come on, Kevin. Let me have it. Come on.” “Ah, shit.” He rocked, bouncing the headboard against the wall. “Come before somebody hears,” Alexis demanded. “Come on, damn it.” “Right there, Lexi.” He leaned up, caressing the curve of her back. “You feel so good.” “Come for me.” She bounced. “Now...do it now.” “Uh...uh...” Alexis’ cell phone rang as Kevin flowed inside her. “Oh.” She exhaled from passion and disgust. “Kevin. Look what you did.” “Sorry.” He rested on her, panting. “I couldn’t help it.” Her phone rang again. “Aren’t you getting that?” Kevin rolled off her and propped his feet up on the bed with his knees in the air. She checked the screen. “It’s Penelope, which probably means bad news.” She sat up, fixing her hair. “Hey, P,” she spoke slow, disguising her hurried breathing. “What’s going on?” “A woman’s body was found in a house on Champagne Road.” Detective Penelope Dao told the address. “Heading there now. You at Grant’s party?” “Yeah.” Penelope snickered. “You must love Kevin to put up with Grant for him.” Alexis checked her watch. “It’s nine-fifteen now.” She got off the bed, straightening her dress. “What’s going on?” Kevin whispered. “I should be there in fifteen minutes.” “Okay, see you.” Penelope hung up. “No.” Kevin groaned. “Lexi.” “I have to go.” She got her panties and kissed him. “It’s a homicide. You got tissue or something so I can clean off?” He got up, taking a handkerchief from his pocket. “You promised tonight would be for us.” “You better be glad I came.” She wiped Kevin’s c*m off her thighs. “s**t, you know how much I hate Grant. Just being here gives me hives.” She tossed him the sticky hankie. He held it with two fingers. “Ugh, what am I supposed to do with this?” She chuckled, pulling up her panties. “It’s yours.” He put his jacket on, stuffing the rag into the pocket. “Is it always gonna be like this?” “I’m a homicide detective.” She looked herself over in the mirror. “I can’t just drop everything no matter how much I want to.” “But every f*****g time we’re together there’s a call.” She left the room. “What can I do about it?” He followed her downstairs. “It’s not fair though.” “What are you saying? You can’t deal with it?” “That’s not what I’m saying.” He grabbed her hand when they got off the stairs. “I respect your job, but I need you too.” “I’ll make it up to you.” She kissed him, stroking his cheek. “I promise.” He stood back, eyebrow raised. “You say that every time you get a call.” They continued until they got to the crowded ballroom filled with Tate Valley’s most distinguished citizens. Grant Copeland sat at the center table by the small orchestra, singing along with the music. Men and women joined in, swinging their glasses in unison. “Look at him,” Alexis growled. “Sitting there like he’s royalty.” “In this town he is,” Kevin said. Grant stood, his short, silver-gray tresses blending with the softness of the chiffon-decorated room. Once again, that sneaky smile formed when his autumn-green eyes found Alexis. She turned around and hugged Kevin. “It won’t always be like this. I promise.” “You better make it up to me.” He kissed her hard, catching her lips in his mouth. “Will you come back?” She sighed. “If I get through early enough.” Grant entered the hall with a glass of champagne. “Firecracker.” He smirked. “You leaving?” She lifted her chin. “I am.” “My god.” He circled her, staring at her curves as he did when she arrived. “That dress was made for you.” He stopped in front of her, gazing at her chest. “And made for me to take it off you.” Kevin’s face turned red as it always did when he tried to subdue his temper. Grant’s eyes brightened, reminding Alexis what a crime it was for a man his age to be so attractive. “I’m just joking.” Kevin glared. “I don’t appreciate your sense of humor.” “Rrr.” Grant laughed, hitting Kevin’s arm. “If anyone brings the tiger out of you it’s Alexis.” “I’m serious,” Kevin said. “Don’t play with me on this, Grant.” “Damn, relax. Maybe you’re the one who needs a drink.” Grant gestured to Alexis. “Where are you going?” “She has a homicide to check on.” “How convenient,” Grant said. “Why am I not surprised?” “What does that mean?” Alexis asked. He rubbed the front of his tuxedo. “I wouldn’t be shocked if you made this homicide story up so you’d have an excuse to leave. We know you don’t wanna be here.” Alexis faked a smile. “I meant what I said, Firecracker.” Grant sipped from his glass then licked his lips. “I want us to be friends.” “And, I said what I meant,” Alexis replied. “That hell would have to freeze before that happens.” “I was hoping to dance with you tonight.” She fought the bile rising in her throat. “Happy sixty-first birthday, Grant.” He slinked up to her. “It would be even happier if you danced with me.” “I came.” She sighed. “Isn’t that enough?” “I still want my dance.” He squinted, his gray goatee wiggling. “Are you coming back?” She ignored him. “Bye, Kevin.” “Bye, honey.” He gave her a gentle kiss. “Be careful.” “Hurry back,” Grant said. “I’ll be waiting.”
